In Bangkok and touristy areas, it may be difficult to find such a meal, but in rural Thailand it is quite common. Field rats are considered food like so many other creatures that Europeans would not even think of putting them in their mouth. It is a different world, different culture.

Field rats are really yummy. People tend to think of rats as dirty animals, which is true of city rats that live near trash cans and sewers. But field rats only eat grains and rice plants from rice fields that do not rely on chemicals for agriculture. This gives it the natural flavor of wild meat, which has a different taste from pigs or cows that are raised in animal farms.

Yes, these are field rats and not the city rats. And yes, they are delicious although every meat grilled is nice. Most of the people, and by that I mean Western people, consider rats as disease carrying animals and that is why it is unthinkable to most of Westerners to eat this animal. And of course, in many other parts of the world, field rats as well as other animals that are not popular in Europe or North America have been a staple food for centuries or even millennia. Interestingly enough, I have come across an opinion of an Asian person who visited US of a very popular American dish - macaroni and cheese, which according to that person was the most disgustingly smelling thing.
