The Thai are a truly lovely people who are blighted by being ruled by a selfish, evil military and super rich Royal Family who do not believe in democracy. Recently in the election on 14.5.23 the Thai's voted most seats in the House of Representatives for a new modernizing party called MFP, with a younger leader leader, Pita Limjaroenrat. They won 147 out of the 500 House of Representative seats and with their allies they would have been able to form a majority coalition government. Pita Limjaroenrat is a modern thinking, highly intelligent and well-educated man, who would have been excellent for Thailand on the world stage. He wanted to reform the monarchy and reduce the power of the military by rewriting the country’s constitution and ending conscription. He wanted to make Thailand truly democratic. When the military seized power in Thailand in 2014 they amended the constitution and introduced a system whereby the 250-seat upper house, the Senate, was entirely appointed by the military (and Royal family acting in the background). In order to be Prime Minister, the person must have the support of both the lower house (House of Representatives) and the Senate (controlled by the military). The recent election resulted in a new leader of The House of Representatives Pita Limjaroenrat, but the evil anti-democratic military and Royal family prevented him from being elected Prime Minister using their control of the Senate to vote against him. CORRUPTION Corruption has plagued Thailand for much of its modern history, with both the private and government sectors partaking in various forms of corruption. Corruption is embedded within Thai society due to its history and culture, where patronage plays a huge role and those with connections thrive. Research shows that the cost of bureaucratic corruption alone in 2018 amounted up to a 100 billion Thai baht, with state officials at various levels embezzling funds from large and small governmental projects. As of 2018, Corruption Perception Index by Transparency International has ranked Thailand as the 99th least corrupt. A year after the 2014 Thai coup d'état, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) declared a war on corruption, a common mission by all military dictatorships following the numerous coup in Thailand's history. However, the junta was also entangled with various embarrassing corruption scandals itself. 19.8.24 UPDATE 14.6.24 Thailand's Constitutional Court has removed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office for violating the constitution over a cabinet appointment. The court said on Wednesday Mr Srettha had "grossly breached ethical standards." "The court has found 5-4 that the accused would be terminated as prime minister due to his lack of honesty". Mr Srettha appointed Pichit Chuenban in April 2024, only to see him quit in May 2024 after the decision sparked a furore. Mr Pichit was jailed for six months on contempt of court charges in 2008 for allegedly seeking to bribe a judge in a case involving Thaksin Shinawatra, a former prime minister and founder of Mr Srettha’s, ‘Pheu Thai Party’. Mr Thaksin was convicted in 2023 of corruption and defaming the monarchy and sentenced to eight years in prison, which caused a furore in the country. He was released on parole in February. Mr Srettha maintained his appointment of Pichit Chuenban, was above board. Real estate tycoon Srettha Thavisin becomes the fourth Thai premier in 16 years to be removed by verdicts by the same court, after it ruled he violated the constitution by appointing a minister who did not meet ethical standards. His removal after less than a year in power means parliament must convene to choose a new premier, with the prospect of more uncertainty in a country dogged for two decades by coups and court rulings that have brought down multiple governments and political parties. The same court last week dissolved the hugely popular opposition, anti-establishment ‘Move Forward Party’, ruling that its campaign to reform a law against insulting the crown risked undermining the constitutional monarchy. It regrouped on Friday 16.4.24 as a new party.
