As a married American woman visiting Chiang Mai now, thank you for this video. There are too many non-Thai people who don’t think about the fallout on nice Thai women after they create an expectation of a relationship but they really just want a temporary good time. Here’s hoping that your video will get a lot of exposure and save some women from heartache and being used.

Great overview and details covered here. At first glance, I wanted to be critical of you covering this topic since you don't strike me as someone that would be knowledgeable about professional ladies, soapy's, Gents clubs, Lady Bars, Gogos and the such. You seem like a straight laced guy that would never ever indulge....however after watching the entirety of the video, you my friend are either an academic scholar that has learned all of this from books and listening to stories or you are a "Man of Culture" that has first hand experience in some or all of these topics (or both LOL). Fantastic coverage of a very taboo topic for American ears!

Such a delightful video. You two are just amazing together. Really nice to watch the shared story telling; I was skeptical and TBH looking for cues but there are none. It's super cute that she gets American dry humor. Her English seems top level. And so it was cool that you did the 19 minute onward section mostly on your own. (Thanks for the arm crossings though 😂Made me laugh!) As I've done both the "good girl" and the "naughty girl" in my life, I have put both feet into the optionality for men. Without a doubt, the worst has been the traditional date, marry and then divorce scenario. I'm so jaded, I supposed, although stats do prove my point, that I associate marriage with divorce. Now that I'm essentially out of the sexual marketplace (I'm near retirement) I just figured that for the remaining health span years I'd rent my aerobics and win without the tragedy of inevitable heart break. As you say, "such a deal." I've already done the research on cost and etiquette. Bought my plane ticket for Jan 25. I am ready! Retirement is just around the corner. But your post divorce life is inspirational so I did really enjoy the first part. Having recently joined Thai Friendly to "see" I was very surprised to find that I am not just an old grandpa worth nothing beyond the wallet. It goes against all I thought that I had understood about younger Thai women and older farang. Sure, there are the buffalo scenarios to be aware, but I might change my monger plans and see if I can earn a smile as close to yours as possible. Is a true relationship possible? Your video helped me to self examine my intentions and be on a path that is clear for my goals. Thank you!

Great job guys! Just for reference, my dad worked in Las Vegas as a carpenter back in the 1950's and he said that the standard rule of thumb for a short time, couple hours with a "Show Girl" was a day's pay. So obviously there was some variables, but that was the average rule of thumb. Most of the bargirls and go-go girls in Pattaya are from the provinces in Isaan. I don't know about now, but back in the 80's thy used to have places that we westerners would call whorehouses that were called a "Lady House". and were mostly used by Thai's. It gets pretty complex, if you want to really understand the culture better, you need to know how to READ Thai. For instance, there are about twice as many soapy massage places then you'll ever know about in Bangkok, because they are not marketing to tourists, but you'll know they exist because they advertise what kind of place they are in the Thai language. I'm not saying they are batter or cheaper, but they are there. Then you also need to know about a Thai custom called a Mia Noi. Not making a value judgment, just acknowledging that Thai culture is different than American culture in many different ways.
@Kano_Jig5 ай бұрын
Great insight. Also recommend learning about Gik culture in Thailand. People often get the wrong impression that western GIs started this whole transactional industry in the 60's during Vietnam War but Thai culture has had these undocumented industries in society for hundreds of years. Whatever western men are doing in these industries is multiplied by 2x when compared to what Thai men are doing in secret. This is often an accepted part of secret Thai society. I once had an older Thai lady that spoke great english (was my Thai language tutor) that told me that Thai men within higher society (High So making upwards of $4K USD per month)...it was a foregone conclusion that he would have multiple Giks and Mia Nois. I was a little befuddled at her candidness and asked her to put a percentage on it and she advised that a Thai man making upwards of $4K USD per month and she said over 90% would have Giks/Mia Nois. She advised that most Thai women would look the other way as long as the man didnt cause her to "lose face". So fascinating and strange!

@@RetiredGlobalLife You did a great job. Your lady will teach you a lot over time. And you being a lawyer means you were trained to be able to see the different angles involved in any given subject without getting too subjective, just acknowledging what observable reality is, not necessarily what it is "Believed" to be by the masses. It's like understanding that Logic started with psychology, not the material world, at least in the history of "Western" civilization. The use of ALLEGORY as opposed to Algebra. What is a "Fact"? It is a commonly held "Belief".

Great Vlog very open and informative. You covered off well about the differences. The only thing I would add is the elephant in the room, where western men look for the freelance lady or holiday romance in questionable locations, and fall more deeply for this person than they thought. I have heard the same thing many times, so I think it is true. I've never taken a pro lady to a hotel room so the issue is academic to me. Either way, they don't seem to care who you bring to your room. Funny they seem to endorse it with the policy you mention.

I worked in a 5 star hotel in Bangkok and the general policy was not to allow prostitutes in the rooms but exceptions were made for important business clientele who felt it necessary to entertain their customers or visiting executives. I would have one of my guys get the ID card from the girl in a discreet manner so as to avoid embarrassment and the card was returned in the morning or whenever she left. Each hotel has its own policy but you could indeed encounter an ID request but it is for your own safety.

If I just wanted to find an interpreter and someone to show me around and learn about Thai culture without it having to be sexual, just easy companionship, would that be more difficult to find? Maybe just hire a private tour guide or something? Any suggestions for legit way to find someone like that. All the stuff you mentioned are sex oriented. It’s okay, but I’m almost 70 and would rather not have a sexual entanglement, there’s always an emotional price to pay. Too bad the society is slanted so heavily in that direction.

She also never asked me to go upstairs nor did I ask her. It was nice to have the companionship, so I understand what you're talking about. I guess my point is, you never know what you might find and I think at the gents clubs, there might be a possibility to find what you're interested in. Or maybe I was just lucky.

Most just eke out an existance best they can. Some return to their hometown and open up a food stall or small shop. Some search seriously for a foreign husband or even a monthly sponsor or multiple monthly sponsors. Some do sex cam work. Some struggle to fit back into regular Thai society, working in a low paying job with a boss, with fixed starting and finishing times seems an impossible adjustment for some. Many struggle with mood dysregulation, impulsivity and anger outbursts as a result of the trauma that preceded the sex work or as a result of the years of working in that industry. This mars their integration back into regular society and prevents them from forming healthy relationships after sex work. There are some foreign religious groups that help younger women drawn into sex work or vulnerable young girls at risk of being drawn into sex work, to develop other skills like making handicrafts /using a sewing machine etc. There are also sex worker collectives who help women in the industry, but as far as I know there is nothing formal to help previous sex workers. And definitely nothing government funded. Like so many things in Thailand it is a complex issue, there is so much stigma still, towards those women who have previously worked in the industry, there is stigma even to just having been a poor farmers daughter, stigma at being from Isaan, stigma at being a hilltribe or Burmese or Laotion woman drawn into sex work ( the drivers being poverty, lack of an education and lack of other options). In a country where you need a bachelors degree to work at 7/11 or in a bank and a preference for youth and beauty in customer facing roles, it is almost impossible for a woman over 40 to get a clerical or customer service job, and definitely impossible to get a job working in McDonalds or similar. Many sex workers did not complete high school, some didn't even complete primary school. Their options for work after they are too old for sex work, are thus severely limited

Enjoying my freedom, growing my personality and counting my new achievements, at 55. It is just not my thing to be surrounded by a woman day-in, day-out. The freelancer path is not more expensive than going for a Thai wife, who expects a monthly salary anyway, and which will never decrease. From my experience, freelancers are great except that sometimes they expect more (or pretend to) and become emotionally attached, especially in Thailand. That is less the case with the freelancers from Vietnam in my own experience, at least the ones I have lived with, they tend to be more straightforward and transactional-focused.

I have met several young nice working girls. They don't want any other life and do not want to get serious. They like the quick money that feeds there kids or parents and want to say in that profession. I have also meet some older ladies 30 on up who never worked in bars and due to financial issues decided to go make quick money and jump in and out and you would never know they are or were a bar girl. When I visit Chiang Mai, I tend to like to wander around in the old City, and after a few days my calves become rock hard. A few years ago, I was keen for a massage, because my legs were quite sore. I accepted the invitation for a massage from a nice young woman in front of a massage parlour, we discussed the fee and in we go. As the massage continued, she propositioned me for a ‘happy ending’ service. I’m not one to engage such services, so politely declined and asked for the sad ending only. This really upset the masseuse; because not long after our session had started, some old rooster walked in and asked for the happy ending service with all the bells and whistles. It was through chance alone that I arrived to the parlour first, and had effectively caused her to miss out on what would have been at least double what I was paying for her service. She began crying as she rubbed me down, and I couldn’t help but wonder if it were genuine, or simply crocodile tears to manipulate me into requesting the extras. Regardless, it became an incredibly awkward experience, and certainly one I’d never forget.

I have a question? there are these Thai style bars/restaurants where they have PR girls. When you arrive they take you to the couch/table and then you can select one or two ladies for company. They charge per hour and these charges are different at different places. This girl give you company as long as you are having drinks and also her dink and food. Now here I am not sure what to do or how it works out and how to approach, that after having drinks if you like the girl can she be taken out or not because there are no bar fines in such places, but I never had courage to ask her out even I saw some local thai people take some lady along. So what to do ?

I’m in a long term marriage but if this doesn’t work out I’ll be going the freelance route. Marriage can be enjoyable but a lot of times it’s exhausting. The sex part is my raison detre for being married, and for that I’d rather be with a woman whose age starts with a 2 and weigh 140 lbs or less. The wife and I are intimate about 1-2 times a month and that’s not adequate for me. I’d probably have 2-5 freelancers in my phone directory. I don’t have any interest in being married again, raising children, supporting family, etc. btdt. I didnt even watch the whole video, 500 baht for that sounds like an extraordinary value to me.

Rather surprised that the acronym GRO seems not to have made a transition from the Philippines to Thailand. It is also a double entendre. At least I haven't seen mention of the phrase so far in Thai videos. Officially prostitution in the Philippines is illegal(wink, wink...nod,nod). In the resorts that cater primarily to westerners, GRO is a common term. It means Guest Relations Officer. This is a real corporate job description / title. However for the GRO workers in the bars it is well known by its other meaning, "Girlfriend Rent Only". Guys do be clear about your intentions, remember karma is a bitch.

Interesting, David. I've never heard the term here. Prostitution is technically illegal in Thailand too, although you'd never know it.

@@RetiredGlobalLife "Lip service" an old but appropriate term. On the "soap box" of political correctness prostitution is defamed, while in the back rooms no one is really interested in killing the cash cow or the goose that lays the golden eggs. Prostitution is one of the oldest forms of human interaction. An exchange of goods for services.

She is 23 years younger than I, a teacher of kindergarten kids, a mother of a 9 year old daughter and a beautiful soul. Last weekend we visited her family in Sisaket. A good family. When here in February for vacation, I met some bar girls, had a good time with them, and respect them for who they are, but for me, for long term commitment, she is mine, and I am her's. its a great feeling to have someone that you love and respect in your life. nothing against freelancers or bar girls. they serve a purpose. Yet to live here like I now do, not for me. Loving Thailand. We will visit Chang Mi in the late fall, would be nice to share some food with you and joy.

Most girls when young go to the district to have fun and hang out and find themself in the bars. After a few years if they are not married they return to there home town. You can tell. Most are older and smoke and tattoted up and over 30 and single with a few kids without husband. You can see them in smaller towns as they return from the pattaya and bangkok during Songkhran to visit. So, they may look liget but most have done a rotation in the town and lived a wild like but got burnt out and know are back in the provence or home town. I know several men who have married bar girls and have a wonderful life. Economic conditions make it so they want to work in the sex trade because it's quick easy money. I would say only 10% are bad eggs the rest are just as nice as any thai lady.
