This is how most rice is grown in this area of Thailand (North East) There is only one crop per year here so it needs to be a good one, There are much easier ways to do this but the old fashioned way is cheaper and for the most part better yield and better quality of rice.

People take food for granted when it takes so much effort to make.

I'm glad you make these videos to inform the world that food doesn't just come from the local grocery store. Most people never give it a thought on where their food comes from and how much work is involved in getting it to that "Magic" place called the store. Again, thanks for all of the work you do to put these videos together.

This is very hard work, There are other much easier ways to get the same results but this is the traditional way to do it and it is hard to convince someone to try something different, Rice is life and they know they well get good results doing it this way.

v.nicely put together people can see the back breaking effort that goes into producing rice, these farmers work harder than anybody else I know. And then there is the weather....are you in Isaan? Last year was quite bad so this year the family mixed by planting some sugar beet.

Transplanting looks to be the most backbreaking part even though it is all manual hard work....Nice vid...Curious to why you transplant and not just harvest from seed ?....Wouldn't it just grow wild or is it to maximize yield?

As a farmer explained to me the roots grow longer after transplanting. Roots can then get better nutrition and water from the soil.

Very labour intensive and hard work but I suppose there are long periods where you just watch it grow. The land where the seedlings were growing must be very fertile they looks so lush and green.

Rice is stored in the hull and removed as needed, We do it a bag at a time, Rice can be stored for years this way. It is done by a rice mill.

How long does it take a family to harvest the rice? and then bag the rice? How are the fields prepared for the next harvest? When does preparation of the seeds begin (May?)? Thank you!! This was an excellent video!
@lifeinthailand
@lifeinthailand 8 жыл бұрын
Well that is hard to answer, Time depends on a lot of things ut mostly how much land, For us it is about a month. Fields are prepped with any aged manure/compost and then turned over, Close to harvest it is turned again if needed and made flat. Around here planting is normally in June, But depends on rain. Thanks for watching.

Looks like hard work...why do they have to plant seedlings in one place & then transplant them into the rice field. Why not just plant them in the field first, so they don't havta transplant?

Do the farmers remove the chaff themselve and sell the rice to the locals or are they selling the rice to factories?
@lifeinthailand
@lifeinthailand 5 жыл бұрын
The rice is sold in the hull, the rice that is eaten by the farmer is "cleaned" as it is needed, normally 1 bag or rice at a time. Rice stores much better in the hull.

Hi Paul, can you make a video tutorial on how to germinate paddy seeds for viewers who wish to grow some paddy plants at home (i.e. in plastic containers or bottles)? 2 days of soaking in lake water...would the same procedure be recommended for home gardening (i.e. soaking unhulled paddy seeds in water inside a container for same duration of 2 days)? Any preparation for seeds required beforehand (rinsing, drying, pre treatment etc.)? And how long does it take to germinate after sowing on soil (dry, with water or any of the two)? For home gardening, can we just sow the seeds directly and not worry about transplanting? Thanks.
@Capsius
@Capsius 3 жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention the reason for requesting for a tutorial video is for home garden decoration, adding varieties of plants to the garden. Definitely not for home consumption as any harvest, if any at all...would not be sufficient for home cooking considering the little amount of space and resources a home gardener would have! lol. Thanks.

I don't think you can grow rice that is out of the hull, but I never tried. I have watched a lot of people try to grow rice at home, most fail simply because they over seed, the rice need room to grow. How farmers that transplant here do it is 3 seedlings in a group planted a foot or so apart, no closer than 6 inches. Its the wrong aseason now to plant rice here, it might germinate but it is not going to do good, this would be an interesting experiment next year.
@Capsius
@Capsius 3 жыл бұрын
Cool, looking forward to your paddy seed germination experiment video next year if you make one. Yeah, I guess we've just past the planting season by a couple of months now. Hope your fields are doing good. It's been raining cats and dogs here way in the south in KL these couple of weeks. I have store bought Calrose black rice (with the outer dark hull) and Thai brown rice (with the brown hull), these are definitely not fresh ones from farm, they are imported and have gone thru a long chain of logistics, dealers etc...not sure if they would germinate successfully even if I attempt to give them a shot. Yeah, I tried soaking hulled wheat and rice the other day...don't bother doing it...without the hull, they will just become soggy grains good for making nice porridge! Oh thanks for the feedbacks. 3 seedlings on a spot 1 foot apart from the next group of 3 seedlings, I will remember this one. (I don't have land for cultivation at the moment.)

It depends on variety of rice and the weather but normally between 4 and 5 months. There are places in Thailand that has 3 crops per year so they must be getting it done in 3 1/2 to 4 months.

Nice film! Do they burn the fields after the harvest where you live? Here, in Chiang Mai, they burn after every harvest and there are three harvests per year! The burning can go on for 6 weeks across the province and cause very serious air pollution. Are you in Isaan? You are lucky if you don't suffer that. :)
@lifeinthailand
@lifeinthailand 7 жыл бұрын
Yes were in Issan, They only get 1 crop a year here so no need to burn, some times they burn around the sides to kill the weeds but it is not a huge deal, better than spraying chemicals to kill the weeds.
