Thailand's public debt is often politicized due to its enormous rise in recent years. However, these are all misunderstandings. Let us know what you think!

As local people in there, it isn't politicized, but it is serious issue that created by military government or hybrid regime after general election. Thailand debt before military coup was at around 40-45 percent of GDP but after military gov. took over in late 2014 so Thai government always use deficit budget for buy some defense spending aka many of them more likely corruption , want to buy what they want or give promotion to their beneficiary and thing get more worse that they burn debt for populism to secure victory in election which in fact they did win that in really tricky way. In new government leadership still same but have more politician in coalition so they continue their populism especially in covid-19 era which they were pretty fail to help SMEs (help corporation as they always do) and continue to throw to people a lot (all of them are around 1-2 trillion baht) . it always be heated debate every time when they want to get loan in parliamentary process due to failure to help people and return little benefit to public in overall and thing get worse that they were broke public debt law in another tricky way to limit from 60 percent of GDP to 70 percent of GDP. In conclusion in Mr. Prayut gov. he was responsible for the rise of public debt (right now it is nearly 20 percent that his government without heavy reaction from opposition MP and public it will be worse) created it with little benefit return except their own political survival. in fact, if public debt never be serios problem so Bank of Thailand (specifically Monetary Policy Committee) will never be serious to raise interest rate (they can not raise interest rate that much because of public debt) among massively increases interest rate from FED right now.

my self and people in bureaucrat that i was spoke with when i was internship or even politician know really well that next government (if Mr. Prayut or Pravit never win again) , they must solve this s_it that this government done in past 8 yrs. (more public is less money to use especially in use of infrastructure and development). sometimes you need to understand political context especially in Thailand which in nature they always use conservative way in fiscal policy. in other hand Household Debt is pretty high that worse number than public debt ( around 89 percent of GDP right now) PS everything did not got worse because public opinion really strong and gov. did not want lose face or humiliation sometimes.

In Thailand, any issues can be raised to be politicized. Just rely on real figures not word of mouth. For example, someone with hidden agenda may complain through social media that the Gov raised highest debt compare with the past. It is a sensitive political-related issue, but doesn't mention that 90+% of debt is from domestic or GDP per Capita is highest in this Gov. Anyway in this case, PR needs to work more actively.

A good video, I appreciate your work. Forecasts for tourism, as well as exports need to be updated, to current. You shall see a contraction. I'm in the US, and the Central Bank here (Fed Res) has to raise interest rates to curtail loans (cheap money), without defaulting the Gov. The best thing the Thai Gov., can do is to reign in spending, and taxation, and give foreign companies a best fit for taxation so that Thai labor can be employed. Pay particular attention to the cost of energy. All growing economies need it cheap. Best wishes. I don't know your background in economics and engineering, so I have to keep this at a base level. Glad you had the courage to post. I have family in the kingdom, and want them to prosper. Great people, the Thai. I love them dearly. Soon to visit. Plan on spending my USD there to support Thai's across the country. Wonderful people. I worry about them, and family.
