Thanks for taking us across, Wayne. We come to observe this culture not to judge. They are surprisingly friendly in this village. I'm no fan of the other villages exploited by tourist operators bringing bus loads of people to gawk. As for the moaning Aussie. Fuel prices have tripled last ten years. Cut a bit of slack for a man who be lucky to make 5 bucks a day.

Nice one Wayne. The emotional side of it well covered in all the comments below which I agree with. Probably the happiest and friendliest people I've seen and that in itself says that you were well received which would mainly be to your easy going nature and kind heart. They appeared to be very comfortable in front of the go pro too. It would be hard not to fall for some of those women especially but not just the 'frog' impersonator. They come across as being well educated too, their grasp of English that is easy to understand extremely good. I am sure they will love seeing this video too. Cheers buddy. 🤩

Very nice time, and thank you Wayne for slogging and sharing such moving experiences. From this side of the screen mate, I see no reason for regrets. I appreciate your point about it being a "bit of a circus" but you were right about it being their livelihood. It's a tough place in the world to make a living, they are obviously very dedicated to providing a good service and you did them a service by introducing to the world in such a good light. I had a similar feeling after my first encounter I had with Long-neck people in Mae Hong Son. I was walking in the village center past some Long-Neck ladies buying and selling when I heard a young ladies voice in perfect English say "Hello, where are you from?" I turned and under a umbrella with the long neck ladies was a tiny young lady dressed and groomed like a doll, who had been born with no arms and legs. She had that same charming smile and magnetic nature. I turned and said "I'm from Alaska dear, do you know about Alaska?" She said did, and she asked what it was like to live is such a cold place. and I expected a begging scam but she never asked for anything, and asked her why her English was so good, and she said she loved learning languages and she wanted wanted to work in the tourist industry. I had heard of disabled people being used as a begging tool so I asked her about her story, and she said she was born without any arms or legs and was given up to the Monks who placed her with the Long-Neck people. I asked if she was treated well and she said she was well cared for. I asked if she was happy and she said she was, and it showed in her spirit. We chatted for quite some time and the Long-Neck ladies were charming and friendly like the ladies in the village but spoke little English. I do believe the young lady was well cared for, and I said would like to donate to her dream of working in the tourist industry and have her about $40 I had in my wallet, but she refused, and one of the long-neck ladies took the money and shoved it back at me. I asked the young lady to explain that I wanted to donate to help in her work in the Tourist industry and when the older Long Neck lady, I suspect was her adopted mother understood and thanked me and accepted the money. When you said it's a different culture, I though back to that moment that's stuck with me all these years and how it humbled my view of others and myself, and I'm not sure that cultures or people are so different, but rather our situations are. Something you are showing and sharing in your unique way Wayne that's unique and valuable. Well done!

@@WalkAboutWayne Thanks Wayne, I suppose through our cultural conditioning and prejudices tend to be premature in our suspicions and judgments. For people to be exploited for tourism profit by criminal elements is of course not unheard of, and if honest intuition suggests something, that's reason to look and explore deeper and what better way to find out the truth of a situation, then by putting one's most honest and genuine face forward and engaging? From what I remember long time ago the Long-neck Kayan (I recall a local slang term for them as wel ) were considered and treated as outsiders and did not have an easy go. Those those people may in part, acting a part, and if they are doing well with their village I'm happy for them, and there's is always a real person behind an actor. The ladies were fun and seemed to have a genuine heart, and I did see monk there. I suspect he could have been a real monk affiliated with them so you may have encountered something more authentic then one might expect. It would be interesting if they had a BnB village home stay and see a bit more behind the scenes. The little lady I met with no arms or legs, I thought was a prop for donations, but that did not seem to be the case. But even if she was, she and her lot seemed to have a better than a lot of us in here in "America The Beautiful" and "Merry old England" eh?

Great vlog, Wayne! You shouldn’t feel awkward about filming the village, as you just introduced the village to 15000 potential visitors, who could benefit the village immensely by going there and potentially buying their wares. As far as the Aussie guy, his loss for passing on a fascinating visit just to save 6 dollars. He probably makes that working 10 minutes back at his job in Australia, but couldn’t part with it to benefit a village, as well as enjoying the experience. Sad.

@@WalkAboutWayne The story as I have heard it is that the lowland Burmese were stealing the women and the rings were an attempt at disfigurement to make them less desirable. The necks do not become elongated but the downward pressure of the weight dislocates the collarbones. The neck muscles atrophy and removing the rings is a death sentence because they can no longer hold their necks up. And the sorrow you felt might be your ability to perceive w/o knowing the sadness of the situation and the human zoo aspect. However, I would also say that there is a strong feeling of community amongst themselves and there is a security in that, much as there is in my wife's farming village as people stick together and help each other.

BUT I would say the questions/remarks made could be less over the top so it doesn’t make it feel like they’re “putting on a show”.. one remark that was a bit over the top was “so you will stay here forever” - again could word that as “did you wish to move anywhere else or you want to stay here”.
