In 2003, Cambodian media falsely alleged that one Thai actress mentioned that Ankor wat belongs to Thailand. The Thai embassy was burnt down and Thai businesses were vandalized. It is the worst case between the two countries. The late king suggested to Thais that they should not retaliate and cool down. A friend of mine who speak Thai visited the historic town was told by a Cambodian local not to speak Thai. Cambodia is sandwiched by two Thailand and Vietnam. Very occasionally Cambodia has no choice but to claim against something historic against Thailand. One thing to be mentioned of is that the Khmer empire had adopted Hinduism in which citizens are classified in Varnas. Today Cambodians are the progeny of the laboring clade's leftover when almost all the upper clades were eliminated by the labors in the civil war wherein they were dethroned. That explains why they can never build any great castle with the Khmer architecture ever since. All the later era's structures built in Kampuchea are much different from the Khmer castles. They all look much more like the adoptions from Siamese culture.

As a combodian, majority of us called thailand people as thai "ថៃ" (it's just a name of thailand, it doesn't refer any bad meaning). Plus we don't usually claim people's culture as ours but we just get inspired from other countries (mostly kids nowadays they're really inspired by korea, japan, china, america). If I were Cambodian I'd be more concerned with preserving their culture from being completely subsumed by China than trying to claim Thai culture as their own. Most infrastructure from canals to Airports are china run. 90% of Cambodia's no.1 industry (textiles and garments) are Chinese owned. 40% of the country's entire debt is owed to 1 country - you guessed it; China etc. This is not a good situation to be in friend.

As a Cambodian and i’m not trying to be bias or anything but I completely agree with you. We shared a long history of cultural influences that kind of back and forth. And as you mention, the Khmer Empire influnced Thai culturally in a numerous of ways and noting that the Khmer civilization is historically older than Thai, we can say that thai wouldent necessarily ‘steal’ but rather take those cultural factors and make them uniquely to their own, but still has those Khmer aspects to it. For instance let’s take our written/spoken language. The Khmer is part of the Mon-Khmer language family (emerge around 500 CE) which is more older than the Tai-Kadai language family (emerge around 1200 CE) which includes Thai. Under the Khmer influence, Thai has adopted a lot of Khmer tones and written scripts and later develop a distinctive language combining a various of influences to the Thai language. This is why we see so many similar words with exact meaning in our language.

After the fall of the Khmer Empire and rise of the Ayuddhaya Empire, things to start to look a little different, as Thai culture influenced Khmer culture instead . To the architecture, to the cuisine, to dance and music. Speaking of which, Cambodians must admit that their court dance is highly rooted and influence by Thai. All of these factors plays in to our cultural exchanges and so both nation must acknowledge our shared cultural heritage.

It has become a joke among Thais, when in fact Cambodia was ruled by Thailand for 400 years and was a country that suffered genocide by its own people. Thailand only helped prevent their extinction, but we are shocked by the fact that the intelligent, skilled, and developed Cambodians were among the first to be genocide. Thai help but not without seeing the benefit. Khmer's land was almost split in half for Thailand and Vietnam. Because of the French, we did go extinct. But we still lost some land to Vietnam for the peace offering and suffered by French.

I am 47 years old. I am Thai. Since I was a child, I have never seen Cambodians dress like Thais. Thailand is different from Cambodia because it has a dynasty that has ruled for a long time and has not collapsed. That is why important events in each era are recorded in the national annals. In the past, Thailand did bad things to Cambodia to the point that Cambodians are angry. It is understandable. But that is a matter of the past that cannot be changed. It depends on how honest they are with the historical truth.

Yes Cambodia is poorer than Thailand, that is true and it is funny how Thais are making fun of Cambodia or other countries being poor but yet got mad and sensitive over an apple commercial portraying Thailand still living in a slum. Where is your logic lol? I bet you if South Korean people started to look down a lot more on Thai you guys will cry and will try to ban them and make the world feel bad for you guys. Cambodia keep claming famous stuff from Thailand because they couldn't make their stuff famous. Laos keep saying North eastern Thailand was once part of their country when their entire country was once part of Thailand. Myanmar, the country is going thru civil war right and what did they do ? They came into Thailand, looking for a refuge or a opportunity. From that i've seen, only 3 countries that Thais are mostly making fun of. They don't making fun of other countries out of nowhere. Everything has a cause and effect.

@@FridayN35 I've been in a few places in Thailand and no, luxury doesn't exist only in Bangkok, lol. Chonburi province like Pattaya and Sriracha for example, have almost everything Bangkok has except maybe like a train. There are also Phuket, Chiang Mai, Samutprakarn, Hua Hin, Rayong, Korat, and much more. If i have to guess, you're either bias or have no clue what you're saying cause you've never been to Thailand.

180 years ago the westerners, from French ruler, said that Khom was Kmer ancestor and now Google says so. This is very wrong. Khom from Korat Highland (Thailand now) went to build Angkor Wat since 8th century. In the stone scripts by Khom, they mentioned Kmer as their SLAVES. All Khom kings had been named ".....VARMAN" till the last Jayavarman IX was rebelled by a slave leader called Trasak Phaem in 15th century, since then the name VARMAN was abolished. King Trasak Phaem (Sweet Melon in meaning) was the first ancestor of Narodom Reign now and the reign has never used Varman again for they have been realized that they never been Khom but Kmer+Champa . They have never been able to build or renovate any ruins architecture for they have never had any knowledge or how-to while Siam (now Thai) can do everything whose Khom did. Why Thai? The answer is Khom was the ancestor of Thai.

The truth is the original Thai people were Tai people from China. Search up what Tai people wore back then, what language they spoke, which script they used, etc. Tai people came to Khmer empire and adapted the already established Khmer culture and traditions. Who came first is the origin. That is fact! Khmer never called Tai the homeless, so don’t disrespect Cambodia because Khmer ancestors gave your Tai ancestors a roof during their toughest time. You Thai people wouldn’t be here today without Khmer’s mother land. Be humans, be grateful, and don’t be too arrogant. Wars happen. We can win and we can lose. Just because you’re a little ahead today doesn’t mean it’ll be that way forever. You’ll never know. One day, Thailand might turn into dust because of WWIII. This is an example of the lack of knowledge and education. Even the US has to give money through the World Bank to develop education in Cambodia. It's not just an imagination, but the walls of Angkor Wat. Science can prove that Cambodians have DNA of only savages who were brought as slaves from Indonesia during the colonial era. They don't have a great fake history like the fake leader Hun Sen deceives people into believing. If you don't believe the evidence of savages or Negritos, try searching for your ancestry on Google and compare the faces of your own people to see how they are different from the current Cambodians. And real Thais do not have Chinese ancestry as your stupid textbooks teach us. We just have had good relations with Chinese people since the past. It is not strange that Thais marry Chinese people, just like today when Thais or people from other countries marry people of different races, but Thais are still Thais who never had the original ancestry of being Chinese.
