As a Tai Ahom from Assam 🇮🇳, Northeast India, Thailand is like my solace purely because I relate with everything there. From language, food, dresses, culture to looks, I feel more connected to this land than any other place. I highly recommend anyone from Northeast India especially the Tai communities to atleast pay a visit once, in order to know how a Tai speaking community lives. I have personally visited Thailand 3 times. Covered most of the regions. My favourite city has to be Chiang Mai. Can't wait to be back again soon to discover even more. ขอบคุณมาก 🇮🇳🇹🇭

Fun fact: Thailand drives on the left because of (indirect) British influence. The Japanese started exporting many vehicles to Thailand and also helped a lot with their transportation infrastructure. The Japanese themselves drive on the left because the British built their railways and then roads followed suit.
@Banom7a2 жыл бұрын
Thailand also border British colonies like Myanmar/Burma and Malaysia which also drives on the left, In the case of Myanmar, their dictator leader woke up one day and have a divine dream that everyone should drive on the right in the 70s.
@kittenastrophy59512 жыл бұрын
I would say not likely true. Left side driving seems to start before WW I in Thailand due to the need to seamlessly connecting with British colonized neighbors as well as the meter gauge rail system( as you said). Japanese auto builders only came in the 60s ,quite late in time though slowly but strongly predominating the Thai auto market to date. Coincidently that Thai and Japan both have the same driving rule on the left.
@onalonan Жыл бұрын
No my friend, there are really a lot of Japanese that love Thai and have been moved to lived here in Thailand like over 100,000+ population but in terms of the transportation infrastructure were all about auction my friend, they didn't help Thailand it's because there are a lot of companies fought for those projects and yes probably what you saw many times were the Japanese company won but not most of them my friend they had to competed with others company in Thailand to won the auction too to worked on those project, and like I saw about 25 years ago when you have a big project such as big long second or third floors Toll way, BTS skytrain or MRT underground train they still have a lot of companies from many countries worked together because it's really a big project and what I've seen too like you was one of them always the Japanese company it's probably because they are professional and won because sent a good price at auction but ofcourse not only the Japanese company worked on those project, like when we built the MRT 25 years ago we called Joint-Venture BCKT as a name of a company because we have 4 company doing work together only dig the tunnal hole itself for the MRT underground train already used the machine fromThai company+Japan company+ Germany company. We have to do together because it was a really big project. If it's not that big project, Yes probably they could do that project by only 1 big company and that's mean only one country do that project. Just like we Thai company just already completed built the First SkyTrain for Bangladesh people it's called the Dhakha Metro Rail Project, and they already tested the train to use since last year.

Thailand is a beautiful place, I love how close the Indian and Thai cultures are. When I first went to Thailand, I was fascinated by your jiggly-wiggly letters, similar to our Indian scripts and some Ramayana excerpts in the form of Drama, as we do Ramlila in India. But, i couldn' t make any from the language which seemed very sinitic and cute to me, with the tones. Plus, being from Odisha state of India, we had trade relations with Thai kingdoms too.

Being a Thai myself, I'm really excited to see this episode. Aside from the puns and the pronunciations, I think you've done a great job. One thing I'm rather disappointed about is that there's no mention of my home province Buriram. Buriram is a province located on the southern part of Isan. It is where the Panom Rung castle (a castle that works kinda like the Stonehenge ie the sunset will align along the middle of castle sometime in a year) and the Khao Kradong (one of the few dormant valcanos in Thailand) are located. Really want you guys to cover that. But other than that, I think you guys have done great job on this episode.

One of the greatest experiences I had was traveling to Thailand to teach music. I recommend any 'touristic' activity or location that are well known, but take a chance to and get in touch with local communities and 'normal' Thai. The respect they show to others is admirable, and they truly are the most polite and hospitable people I've met. Almost to the extreme, which will take some getting used to. If the whole world was a little more like Thailand, we'd have a lot more peace. Also, you forgot a little detail in the friend zone. One of the oldest diplomatic relations in the world and in Thailand is between the royal families of Thailand and the Netherlands! Over 400 years of friendship!

Thailand, which has about the same land area as Spain or France, consists of two broad geographic areas: a larger main section in the north and a smaller peninsular extension in the south. The main body of the country is surrounded by Myanmar (Burma) to the west, Laos to the north and east, Cambodia to the southeast, and the Gulf of Thailand to the south. Myanmar extends along the western portion of the peninsula as far as the Isthmus of Kra, after which Thailand occupies the entire peninsula until reaching its southern border with Malaysia at roughly latitude 6° N.

Yayyyy!!! Finally, my long-awaited episode!!! Really impressed how you could cover everything about my home country in just over half an hour and how you could nicely avoid discussing the hot and controversial topic of the monarchy. Kudos to you 👏🏼 Also loved how Hannah mentioned 555 as the first thing in her part 55555 As a Thai person, I would say younger generations are becoming less religious, especially in urban areas. Although most of us are Buddhists, many are superstitious as animism has always been part of the Thai culture, with a mix of Hindu influence. As for major cities, population-wise, yes, Hat Yai, my hometown, is the second largest outside of the Bangkok metropolitan area since it’s compact and densely populated. But area-wise, I would say Chiang Mai is the second largest metropolitan area, followed by Nakhon Ratchasima, Pattaya and Hat Yai. Cities are often divided into smaller municipalities. So when asked how big a city is, you’ll have to look at its major municipality and take into account other smaller municipalities of its vicinity that form the metropolitan area :) And for those names we can’t even pronounced, it’s probably because they’re written in the Latin script. If they were written in Thai, it would be easier for us to read. That being said, many Thai names consist of big words from Indic languages like Pali and Sanskrit. Even if they were written in Thai, Thai speakers would find them challenging to read. What’s more, some names are transliterated into English in a very fancy way to reflect their Indic roots regardless of their actual pronunciation. So you’ll see things like Suvarnabhumi Airport, which is actually pronounced “su-wan-na-poom”. 😅 Linguistically and culturally, yes, we’re related to the Lao people, especially people in the Northeast, where the border is just the mighty Mekong. The Isan Language of the Northeast is linguistically a Lao dialect but due to politics, it’s referred to as a Thai dialect. Finally, I want to say thank you for making this episode! ขอบคุณครับ 🙏🏻 (kob khun krub)

@Cuddles The buffer state idea wont last if France and England were able to come to term of negotiation what they need in Siam and eventually they will. If you look back harder in history France and England try to extend their border into Siam territory multiple times by force and by whatever history reasons with their current colonies like Laos and Cambodia or Vietnam that Siam territory used to part of their colonies before but being invaded by Siam so they need it back, it was only Siam military who responsible to fight for their own land no help from either France or England, why would they? They desperately needed Siam but cant take it You know what Laos used to be buffer state between Siam and Myanmar so does Cambodia they used to be buffer state between Siam and Vietnam they both didnt end well in history they wont maintain their independence until the end. Siam was too big as buffer state anyway it way larger than their countries in-fact. Anyway both countries weren't the first pair to try to gain their benefit in Siam it wasnt something new, before it was Portugal and Spain they weren't work out eventually left the room for the new powers for Siam to balance. When the buffer state idea about the collapse cause both countries keep extend their border the Siam King went to find new allies in Europe by himself his European tour include Kaiser Wilhelm II of Prussia and Tsar Nicholas II of Russia ! Before that he also send his sons to study there he knows about the conflict between European countries that it can use it as the advantage to balance the power, this strategic helps the country to last until first world war and then second and that’s how Japan came to fill the gap. Thai fascist government joint Axis in order to reclaim the former colonies territory that Thailand lost to France and England during the colonial period and successfully did it in the modern war era. but sadly since Axis lost and if Thailand wanna join UN ( Founded by the winner side of course) so what Thailand took from their colonies be must be given back, thats how the US came to play. Thailand isn't a deserted country, it located right in the middle Malay peninsular, got border between 2 world most important oceans and norraw part of that country that able to dig the cannal to coonect between 2 seas, rich nature resources and population of less than 5 million back then it way better than most of France ad England colonies. Are you seriously thinking that the term of buffer state is really the reason of independency? lol.

Actually, It is really normal for modern day because of nationalism system that makes us separately. For example, there are around 25 million Thai who have to separate from Thai mainland and live under China territory in Guangxi and Yunnan. Moreover, there are Thai in northern India and northern Myanmar too. In addition, Laos and Thai are same race but have to separate the country because of French during the colonization period. So, every country also has the problem of unfair territory which separate their brothers and sisters apart. But we do not have to be angry by the past. We have to create the better world that all races can live together, no border , no nationalism, unite as one.

The part in which you say that Lan was divided into 5 smaller kingdoms at that period is a bit wrong though. The area which is called Lan Na didn't get divided into 5 smaller kingdoms until the times of Rattanakosin era when it became a vassal of present-day Thailand or at that time called "Rattanakosin".Before that, in the Ayutthaya period, Lan Na is still a unified kingdom ruled by the " Mang Rai" dynasty until it became a vassal of the Taungoo and Kaungbaung Dynasty later on. After the Ayutthaya kingdom fell, the Thonburi kingdom took back Lan Na from Burmese ruled and established 5 smaller kingdoms as a vassal that you have said in the video. These so-called kingdoms would later get slowly abolished and fully annexed into Thailand during the reign of King Rama the V.
