After visiting Thailand several times, the stereotype I have of Thailand is that all Thais are nice. I know that is not true, but Thais always make me feel comfortable, show me respect, and I'm happy when I've been there; no matter if in the north, west, south or even in Bangkok!
@KT-zo6tk4 жыл бұрын
s n that’s partly true, maybe for the service workers they have to be extra nice to foreigners. But in Thai culture we’re just taught to be very respectful to others. It’s like you come into our home we will treat you nicely because we want people to bring back good impression, not because in our head we always think about tourism industry.

Dude ! You know nothing about sex tourism or anything related to this aspect ! Prostitution was the oldest form of business and money earner since humans are walking on this planet ! Go look around any big historical seaport or business hub city ,...... you will find traces and may be active sex tourism going ! FYI ! The biggest sex industry is the fashion industry of LA and the Hotels and Casinos of Las Vegas ! In NY city ,..... each public office (their workers in night shift ) are just out of control ! Since marriages are going down in toilets ,...... what all these men and women going to do especially in Western countries ! Thailand just makes good money out of it and that's all ! Go to Paris and certain parts of London or just visit Amsterdam ! Rich Chinese men are purchasing comfort women from Burma and Cambodia , partly because one child policy and also widening gender gap between girls and boys there and that is much bigger serious issue than the Thai sex industry since they all are in their own territory and not in foreign country ! Stop beating bush about it !

As a Thai woman who has to work in international business. Normally I have never faced with this kind of stereotype in action, but mostly they just wanna make fun like "Bangkok" or "Bangcock" I do not against sex industry on the other hand I exactly do not support it, because we should have not used our gender to be the representative of sex material. Finally Sex industry in Thailand has never had fixed by government seriously, also should have paid more attention about human rights and young girls's attitude nowadays, because they think this kind of job can make a lot of money easily.

The sex industry has played an integral part in the growth of Thailand. The Thai tourism authority knows this and so does every Thai person. That's why whenever they vow to cleanup the industry, it is only a few raids here and there to publicize their work and then it is back to business as usual. Try shutting down the red light districts in Bangkok and let's see how many 5 star hotels on Sukhumvit survive.

That industry earned a lot of money but just be in somebody hands.

I've been to Thailand for the first time this month, and I loved it. Its notorious sex industry not only affects how people look at Thai women, but also at how people look at Thai men who go to Thailand. I was there on a business trip, but also managed to spend a few days exploring the city of Bangkok. My spouse was a bit afraid of what I could have done there, my (male) friends were jealous because they assumed I would spend every night in company of a beautiful young Thai girl, and every evening drinking beer while watching beautiful young Thai girls. I was actually myself scared that my flight would be 50% middle aged males traveling alone :) It wasn't the case and I want to go back and see more. I visited museums, temples, parks, ordinary parts of town (I like street photography), markets, malls, etc. Try to avoid the notorious Sois of Sukhumvit and head instead to Ekkamai or Thonglor (especially the former: it's very local and there are plenty of 100% Thai bars and restaurants with local live bands any day of the week!)

I amazed their calm opinions. This channel is great. もっすごい冷静な意見で驚いた。このチャンネルは素晴らしい。 As someone in the movie says there are great places to visit /see/ experience in Thailand and they have plenty culture in it. For me, ocean resort such as Hua Hin, Kor Sammed is so great. Also, Ayutthaya, Changmai is great too. I want to visit Udon Tani next time ( Simply because the pronunciation of "Udon". It's a one kind of noodle name in Japan. Why there's same name of Udon on this world ? However, when I tell people that I went travel to Thai they say "what did you do outta there?" "Did something sexsual?" , which is sad to me. They tell might me that because of my chiropractor(outgoing) , but there is one thing certain is " middle age guy going to Thai alone means to do something sexual" image is there. There is big gap of their income between city side and country side. Farm villages are poor. This is why their daughters come to city part to sell their bodies to earn money to support their families. That is sad thing for me. One of solution is raise income of farm village part of Thailand OR/AND change industrial structure to 2nd or 3rd industries, I think. BUT they already know such things. This movie is big study to me and made me like Thailand more. Thank you very mucy.

Actually it is nothing shocking about sex tourism in Thailand. When you think about it, a lot of places are well-known for sex industry; Netherlands, Japan, Germany, France, Czech Republic, Scandinavia (free sex in particular), USA, Russia, Latin America, Africa...basically every corner of the world. Even when you look up porn sites, you'll see that various places around the world are popular about sex. What Thailand are particularly infamous for about sex industry are ladyboys and children which I don't know why the govt has done nothing to tackle it seriously. I personally have nothing against legal sex work, especially if it means sex workers can get social welfare through tax and such. Another thing is that (foreign friends' reference), Thai women are generally good-looking! And the cultural aspect, especially Buddhism and none colonization, makes it unique from people from other places. Oftentimes it's not about sex industry, but about the romantic aspect. Thai society, too, has been globalized and intermarriages happen to people from different walks of life. Many foreigners, too, from different walks of lives, get married with a Thai woman who is nowhere near the sex industry.
Good job Paddy! This is a very comprehensive discussion on such a very sensitive issue that has not been openly discussed in the ASEAN (probably because of its topic sensitivity). The view and opinions of the guest were on point and constructive. I've been to Thailand four times and is such a very beautiful and diverse country. It has a rich history, culture and tradition. I am learning to study basic Thai language as well and watching Thai Series like Buppae Sanniwat (correct me with the spelling) and My Ambulance. I wanna go back to Thailand before I go to Paris for my MBA.

The beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. The way you think of things or topics you choose to talk about ... often telling more about your own views and interests to the world. This certainly tells how your mind really is ( narrowed or broad ). We can't lie that there is 'sex tourism' in Thailand but this is no big deal at all as you could find this everywhere in the world, the Netherlands, Russia, Poland, Croatia, the Philippines or elsewhere , even in Australia. By the way, there are lots and lots of good and kind Thai people, beautiful places to visit! So forget about sex tourism if you want to explore the world! Welcome to Thailand!

Peter Grahame Mate, that’s how the world works. Welcome to the modern day. Whether it’s 1st world or 3rd world they’re all corrupt and run by the 1%. I’m speaking about day to day interactions I’ve had with the general public while travelling throughout Thailand. The country itself, land, monuments, ocean and islands are beautiful. Yea I could complain about the smells, lack of infrastructure/sewers/clean water but I’m looking at it for what it is. A negative mindset will always result in a negative perception of a country. I personally love travelling to Thailand from Australia. I live in the greatest country on earth in my opinion but I can still see the underlying beauty in other countries like Thailand. Just my opinion, everyone is entitled to one just like you... I wish I could’ve explored Thailand 40-50 years ago before tourism and western culture took over. @snitchy874 жыл бұрын
The thai minimum wage is a bit over 300thb a day, and most construction work is done by burmese migrants. Of course people have other options but when the average wage is so low, the sex industry becomes an enticing option and lets see you live on 300-400 thb per day. Unfortunately many thai parents in poor families do not place an emphasis on education (and neither does the government in poor areas) so while they have some options they are limited and restricted to low paying ones.

I had an Asian friend who told me she was practicing to be masseuse and I jokingly said "Happy ending?" to which she gave a frowning expression back then. When I said it, I 1. knew nothing about it, it was a joke that was loaded with innuendo (same as when Western women say "Look at size of those shoes!" ) 2. never said it negatively (was just teasing) FYI I'm not promoting the industry, I just doubt Western men look down on Thai women

Man... good or bad. There's too many factors involved to make any clear judgments on the Thai sex industry. But it is in my opinion very vibrant. Of course there's a dark side to it which a lot don't see but there's a dark side to the finance, banking, medical and gambling industries too isn't there. I've never looked down on anyone working the sex trade. Some of the most interesting people I've met come from that trade haha. That 2 younger ladies seem to get what it's about. People all over the world use others to make MONEY nothing more nothing less. We just use fancy words to appear different. I think that this stereotype is awful and I used to think that Thailand was just Pattaya. In fact, I booked a flight to Thailand because it was cheap to go Cambodia from there. The stigma that Thailand is a sex hub was not true at all. Thais were praying to every monk/Buddha that they see, respecting everyone around them, smiling all the time and even bothered to help me when they barely spoke English. I was so taken away by how respectful their country is that I canceled half of my trip to Cambodia to go back to Thailand. Thailand has scams and sex, but the majority of it is far from that! I hope that videos that show how awesome Thailand is get more attention rather than those videos that show nightlife scenes.

Time for some honest talk, (this is sourced from a Thai University publication). According to offical Thai research, 90% of all customers for sex trade in Thailand are Thai. This is because also 90% of all locations where women may ply their trade are also outside the known areas Pattaya and Bangkok. Additionally, sex trade has been around for hundreds of years in Thailand, way before the tourists came. Proof? It use to be that the road system of Thailand was funded by a "brothel tax"! So, obviously there was plenty of business going around to fund the road system!

I expect that said industry is done and dusted as of April 2020 (along with mainstream tourism) - most of the participants are either back in the provinces or back in their own countries by now (and may Buddha help those who arent). I dont miss the katoeys, or the Arabs(Suk)/Russians(Pattaya) and I definitely dont miss the endless stream of Chinese and Korean families wandering up and down Walking St gawping at everything but steadfastly holding onto their wallets for fear of spending 10 baht. Thanks for the video and I hope Thailand (and the rest of the world) can shake this virus off its back ASAP.

I understand why you may think the industry is done and dusted. But did you know that 90% of all sex trade is thai to thai? That is still going strongly. Yes its not as visible, but it doesn't mean it does not exist.
@arthurwatts16804 жыл бұрын
@@DiscoverThailandTV The Thai industry is very different to the Farang beer bars / massage parlors, but I cant say that I miss any of it. Thai men wouldn't be seen dead in an open bar and the lighting in Thai bars reflects that. Washington Square was one of few red light districts that left me wondering what BKK must have been like back in the day, but its unrecognizable now. C'est la vie - the old girl was showing her age and her time came.

@@arthurwatts1680 good point. The approach is very different depending on the customer. Thai “brothels” look very dissimilar to the western ones.
Blind Freddy can tell who is a bar girl to the normal thai woman. Thailand is a polite culture with a few rules in the culture.

I forgot to say that for many thai women it's a big problem i think, I was earlier looking on a contact site and the women Began to write I am not a prostitute. Wow if they do so when they want to find a man, then I think its a problem for them, I really pity thai women, if we look on amount of people in Thailand then I think amount of prostitute is not so big but the media blow it up to something that it isn't..

I have been coming to Thailand since the late 1980's and now I live in Thailand and I have never once been to Pattaya or used the services of a prostitute here. Thai women may be stereotyped about being like bar girls but also farang who come and live here are often stereotyped as always wanting bar girls, and of course both stereotypes are not true.

Duncan Bradford definitely some truth to this comment! Would love to cover an episode on the lives of farang who go to Thailand as well one day! Thanks for commenting ✌️

Its the oldest profession. There are many good Thai woman not just sex people. It needs to be education and regulation. So no spread of aids. Of course age regulations.
@gabiballetje4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the sex industry there is a big problem, it is sad, especially with so many too young people in it as well. It might be illegal officially, but that doesn't seem to matter much at all. And when you see what types of people really go for it, even at the departing airport, the guys you see often, you can just see what the grey dirty old guys are going for, yugh. I tend to like Indonesian and Thai women more and more, and it has gotten so bad i am afraid if i were to go and some girl likes me (fat chance), it might be just fake and for one thing only, and it might be hard to filter those out. Though some, or a lot, might of course be extremely obvious. I guess staying away from the typical areas and staying for a prolonged time might do the trick if you would really want to go for that. Which i won't, i don't believe in that sort of stuff. I've never even been there unfortunately, just seen stuff in documentaries, which might because of that also give me a tainted view of course.

I find the Western world a little condescending in that almost any sexual thing you can do in Thailand you can do in the western worlds red light districts. Indeed there are more than a few European countries that have or are obtaining a similar reputation as Thailand.

i actually disagree with that chubby lady who said the industry is hidden and most thais dont accept it. as a matter of fact its openly talked about in thai society i dont know which world shes from!, the number of prostitutes in thailand per capita is actually less than most countries around the world, its just that its done openly and in thailand u get what u see and what u see is what u get, in most countries everything is just a hush up and done behind the closed door,thoes thai girls have a choice but its all about quick money, most have a normal job but its pure greed that lead them to do what they do

When there is no proper regulation or legislation to protect sex workers that is a serious problem. There are underaged women who have been forced to be prostitutes, some of them are not Thai. That's what we need call to action. It's undeniable that Thai women are objectified and sexualized because of how this industry operates (demand, supply, price). It saddens me that somehow negative generalisation and portrayal of Thai women will continue 😪.

Minute 1:17 ;/ I strongly believe that promoting prostitution as a means to attract tourists is not a positive approach for Thailand's tourism industry. Despite Tourism Authority of Thailand's efforts to promote authentic Thai culture and offer diverse travel experiences, promoting prostitution can only tarnish Thailand's reputation as a desirable travel destination. Therefore, I strongly disagree with the notion that prostitution can have a positive impact on tourism in Thailand.
