Thames Television was a franchise holder for a region of the British ITV television network serving London and surrounding areas from 30 July 1968 until the night of 31 December 1992. Thames Television was acquired by Pearson Television in mid-1993. Pearson Television was itself sold by Pearson plc to the RTL Group in 2000, and rebranded as FremantleMedia in 2001. In 2003, Thames Television was merged with another FremantleMedia subsidiary, Talkback (founded by comedians Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones in 1981) to form Talkback Thames. That subsidiary was split into four new production companies at the start of 2012, with the new Thames producing light entertainment programming. Their home video division, Thames Video, was founded in 1978, and later merged with The Video Collection in 1985, reducing the Thames name under a label titled Thames Video Collection, which later reverted back to Thames Video in 1991, which VCI continued to use even after Thames lost their ITV franchisee, and continued to release videos under their name until 1999 when VCI's deal with Pearson Television expired.

It's important to know that Thames Television only operated on weekdays. The Independent Television Authority said that this was done to avoid that 1 London franchise could buy the rest of the franchise holders. Because of that, Thames never broadcast the full week, instead passing on Friday evenings to the weekend franchise holder, London Weekend Television (LWT). On Monday mornings, Thames would start-up again, with the cycle repeating like that.

Yes and so it did too-from 1968 to 1981 Thames handed over to LWT at 7.00pm on a Friday; and then because the IBA decided to alter the times, from 5.15pm on a Friday also from 1982 to 1992. When Carlton took over in 1993, the same time switch to LWT was retained, until I think the ITV brand came in in 2002 or so at the time.

Many of my fondest TV memories were bookended by these timeless & charming intros. I remember the 'Night Version' well as it was used before the classic Armchair Thriller series.

At 16:30, this was the first version of the final logo, which was only shown before local programmes. When Thames lost the franchise, the music got tweaked slightly.

I remember Thames used to produce "Count Duckula," which, even though it was a British cartoon, also aired here in the US on Nickelodeon back in the late 80's and early-to-mid 90's.

Count Duckula was made for Thames by Cosgrove Hall Productions, who were also responsible for Danger Mouse, Chorlton And The Wheelies, Noddy, The Wind In The Willows (hard to believe that something as mind-blowingly well-animated could have ever been made as a weekly TV series!), and one-offs such as The Fool Of The World And The Flying Ship, The Talking Parcel, the original The B.F.G., and The Pied Piper, amongst many many more. Thames knew they could depend on Cosgrove Hall to produce something both entertaining and classy, and that would sell overseas, so bought the company. Unfortunately, when Thames lost their franchise, that also meant the beginning of the end for Cosgrove Hall.

Another great logo history! I’ve always had a liking for the early Thames idents, and the fanfare used from 1968-1970. If you can’t tell what the difference is, it’s the last four notes. I just like how it sounds. But yeah, Thames had some great idents

I remember when uploading and processing the video that part of the video got copyright claimed for some reason. I don't know what copyrighted material it used, since all the other ITV Generic idents from 1989 never gave any copyright claims.

God those 1991 franchises - to think Carlton passed a quality threshold on no doubt a pack of lies and then never produced one decent programme and relied on the former franchise holder to provide the programmes and then to go cap in hand to the ITC to say they could pay the £43million a year. That licence should have been revoked and taken from Carlton, but the ITC like the IBA and the ITA were pathetic organisations - all mouth no trousers!
