Hi there! I think that everyttime that I hear the Thames ident that I think of Benny Hill tv show.

@Christopher Drennan: Thames made so many things, its a shame it lost its franchise in 1992 and its also a shame that ITV is no longer regional, at least on screen anyway.

Watching UK programs on Australian TV in the 70s and 80s (generally on the ABC) I remember this from Minder, The World at War (that was on Channel 9), Man About the House (which played with it), Kenny Everett, Rock Follies, Danger UXB among others. My wife says she was disappointed when she first went to the UK and found that all those London landmarks actually aren't that close together!

With hindsight, it's quite remarkable that a major TV station pretty much had only one ident for the best part of its 24 year reign. Sure, there's the odd variant here and there. It got remade every now and then to freshen the look of the recording. And it may seem like more when you watch them all together in this two minute compilation. But remember, this is the entirety of a quarter of a centuries worth of idents. To viewers of the day, Thames only had that one ident. But maybe that's all you need. One good sequence that stands as representative for everything the station offers. This has burned itself forever in the minds of a generation (or two) of viewers. What's more memorable, THE Thames ident or the bulging cluster of Channel 5 idents over the past two decade which have featured all kinds of action, motion and logo designs? Remembering a single one of them, vividly, is a strain. On the flip side, however, there's Central. At least four million sequences of the Cake ident, yet all fantastic and collectively memorable for the striking logo which formed in them all.

The night-time version always gave me the creeps. Especially when I would be about 12-13 years old and staying up past 10pm to watch the late film...Blues Brothers or something similar.

0:01-1:10 best ones ever. Not from UK but Thames was part of my childhood. Count duckula, Mr bean, after Henry were all awesome. Thank you Thames from the bottom of my heart. Sad you are gone but will not be forgotten. #thamesliveson

Hailey Shannon it did in the 1950s on ABC

@ Hailey Shannon: Jamie and the Magic Torch, Rainbow, Cockleshell Bay ( pretty much anything by Cosgrove Hall ), Button Moon, The Sweeney, Never The Twain, Man About The House, Thames made tons of programmes in the 1970's and 1980's the most-I grew up with regional ITV, pity it all stopped.

Something nightmarish about all these for me, I guess it's to do with my age when I saw them. Early 80s ITV had a homemade, eerie quality. I might be imposing those feelings onto it as I was about 4 at the time. Imagine going from the Thames ident into early 80s World in Action, with the red vitruvian radar demon from Hell. And the smell of chips and ketchup. On a less mental note, I had completely forgotten about the later Thames ident with the dove and montage. And yet I see it and remember it. So it was locked away in there somewhere. Almost 100% chance I would have never thought of it ever again until I saw it here. How strange.

+DSD Movies I feel the same. I was writing a blog post which referenced the 1980s version of the idents and I tried to describe the feeling of pleasure (knowing a TV show I would enjoy was about to come on) and also uneasiness...it is hard for me to explain, but yes, I found them nightmarish too..and I LOVE World in Action beginning for the same reasons!

I remember the Thames ident that was shown at the start of network programmes outside the London region in the 1970s and 1980s very well. This is my written interpretation of its jingle (based on how it sounded to me): Gowng gowng geeng-er horng ut a norng
