This isn't even 'Peckham Estate' as the title implies. This estate is actually called Gloucester Grove Estate which was adjacent to the North Peckham estate... this is how I remember Peckham, growing up

See my first flat 1981 (two kids while there ), , just before camera. Cuts to street junction showing the George public House. Smallest pub in Peckham , glad I was able to move and let my kids grow up out of the city , North peckham was wild in the. 70s I loved it ..

What I found with nearly all of these housing estates across London, was the interior of the flats were very spacious and uniquely laid out. The architects made great use of space.

Worked the north Peckham estate in the 80s for BT . There were people there that hadn't been on holiday as a family for years as someone always had to be there as they would have had nothing to come back to if they all went . It was a toilet !

I always think about this estate I wish there was cameras more widely and easily available whilst it was up. They way the media in general loved to show the Heygate/Aylesbury estates but there’s really not a lot online about the North Peckham and Gloucester grove estates. Image all the films that would have been filmed on here.

Peckham was my home town, I have fond memories during the 70/80's it was rough at times, especially the north Peckham estate but it was generally pretty safe. As a kid and then a teen I could go pretty much anywhere with no problem day or night. I left in 1989 and moved to Bolton lol but I have to say watching videos of modern Peckham it is easy to see why people think it's a shithole. Peckham was never a posh place but you can really see the deprivation now, with graffiti and trash everywhere it looks like downtown Detroit. Depressing.

The North Peckham, nasty, nasty place - had a g/f from there, she wouldn't got out after 7, too scared, mini cabs stopped going after two drivers robbed and killed, Cator St, seen on the film, just a few yard yards from where 10 year old Damilola Taylor was murdered. Mostly been demolished and replaced with smaller, less oppressive blocks, and the dangerous sticksman filled corridors and passages destroyed

So this is mostly Gloucester Grove Estate not Peckham Estate but anyways... we moved out of Peckham Estate when I was a Tot and over into my nans house on Elm Grove for a bit until we moved right out of London altogether. I've got loads of pictures of inside the flat on the Estate, not too many memories unfortunately, Just everyone was auntie/uncle and one particular lady (nanny finkern?) who gave me polos or 20p if I called her a f**king old bag! I was maybe 3 or 4 years old, to give you an idea of what it was like on the estate. I used to love Peckham, my uncle had an army surplus store in the indoor market off Rye Lane (he called himself crazy Trev, and to be fair he was a bit nuts) I used to love jumping the train on a Friday to go and see him but would die of embarrassment having to ask for 'crazy Trev' lol. The market traders used to park on my nans drive and all paid tribute when she died. Peckham used to be an amazing place but like all places its changed, I stopped going when my nan and uncle died.

Both, they built the estates with majority black people in a time where it was harder for them to be employed and also often concentrated the area problem tenants. It’s was managed decline for the council. Now there reaping the benefits as housing became so cheap rich middle class came and bought housing for profits and more tax.

It’s was multiple issues. Being able to stay on the second floor in the blocks from St. George’s Way to Peckham High street (through the North Peckham and Camden estates) was a big issue. Drug addiction, high unemployment, some very violent families. Cross Burgess Park and you were into the Aylesbury & Haygate with all the same issues. Basically, from Elephant & Castle to Peckham High Street was linked walk ways sinkhole estates The Gloucester had one bus out of Peckham, you got the feeling you were not meant to leave, ever. Violence, murder, robbery, rape and drugs were just part of life. I think many of us suffered PTSD from living there. It’s called Peck’Narm for a reason, it was like a war zone.
