Patricia Routledge reminds me of one of my primary school teachers in the 1970's who was elegant, engaging, firm but fair and had a sense of fun. I could definitely see Ms Routledge as a Headmistress.

I love both of these women. Just reading Mavis’s autobiography about her childhood. Great respect for the talented Patricia Routledge. She is a one off. Loved her ‘kitty’. She is an enviable mimic. Could listen to her for hours. I would equally have loved her mother. I agree with her about politicians getting involved in real life. Such an articulate woman and compulsive viewing, no matter what she does.

Her Hyacinth act was a huge hit in Ireland. A much loved character here. In Ireland we say someone like that is someone who has "notions".
@TVHouseHistorianАй бұрын
So interesting to hear about how the Hyacinth monster was received in different countries. The first time I ever watched Keeping Up Appearances was in 2000. I remember that night I first watched. My jaw was on the floor the entire time. I wanted to laugh so badly, but she was too familiar. I had been the male version of Hyacinth all my life up till then: all the thoughts, motivations, and everything that drove her was all too familiar. I realized that evening that I had come face to face with myself, and fell very much in love with Hyacinth as a kindred soul.

She will always be remembered for her brilliant portrayal of Mrs Hyacinth Bucket (Bouquet).
@chrispaw1Ай бұрын
But thats also a little bittersweet because she did so so much more. A lot of people don’t realise that she played a Hyacinth years before that with the character Kitty who was really a huge influence and guide for her role in Keeping Up Appearances, she did much more than that one show. But still, credit where its due, she spoke to so many of us in that role hey…
@gerardmackay8909Ай бұрын
@@chrispaw1 I remember her as Clinty Clitridge the headmistress in To Sir With Love. Not a huge roll but she played it with warmth and humanity.
@TVHouseHistorianАй бұрын
Her portrayal of Mrs. Bucket is what drew me into her much much greater works. As I look at everything she’s done both before and since KUA, the Mrs. Bucket character pales in comparison to the rest of her works - not the least of which being Hildegard, as well as everything she did with Talking Heads. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg…
@LuciThomasHardylover-qx6tsАй бұрын
Oh yes, Kitty! Who could ever forget? Even as a young child I knew that she was a bit naughty,a bit scandalous! She had a great career on the stage throughout her television work, which is sadly often overlooked.Also, she did a lot of very varied roles for Alan Bennett,and also my favourite, which was a drama in 2001 called Anybody's Nightmare. Based on a true story,she showed us just how powerful an actress she can be, when given a serious and moving role to get her teeth into. It's on KZbin. For those who only know Hyacinth, you really should explore what she's really capable of.
