I’m partial to refusing the space helmet in Super Paper Mario, and the death by Toads complaining in Color Splash...

I've never played TTYD before *(I've seen my brother play a demo at Walmart back in the early 2000s though),* my first Paper Mario game was Color Splash, and I too have found the death by toads shouting at Mario pretty funny and kind of sad because those toads don't realize with all their complaining, they just killed their only hope of saving them.

I remember finding the Dry Bones game over as a teenager when I had engaged that scene, then gotten up to get a drink, then came back and found the "floor is swallowing us" cutscene... and for almost a decade, I swore it wasn't a thing. Then someone streaming the game did it when I asked... so I'm glad people know about it.

Oh no!! I can see that making things difficult. Imagine if Piders spawned in during this sequence, so you'd be guaranteed to lose some Punis every time... I wonder though, what happens if you get to Crump without all 101 in your party...would the cutscene play out as normal or does a text box pop up beforehand saying you have to go back and get them all to safety? If you're unsure, I'd love to test it later today!

It's probably unchanged from the original then, but it'd be interesting if the Switch version did add that requirement so I'll still try it out. I feel like the devs already gave you plenty of time to reach the exit, so it being even easier is pretty funny (though The Great Tree is admittedly confusing to navigate).

It's true! As fun as it is to play around with triggering the time bomb at inopportune times, the non-standard game overs in Color Splash & The Origami King are probably the best in the franchise. In addition to death by Toad, you've got killer game shows, losing to a cowboy shootout, literally getting sliced in half, and being trapped inside of a magic lamp with Luigi for eternity...

I like how they brought back Mario’s possessed sprite for if you chose to join the Shadow Queen. That was a detail from the Japanese version of the original that was cut in most of the localized versions.

It ain't a real Paper Mario experience until you get at least one intentional game over. Also, the part where you submit to the Shadow Queen was so well done. I did it and was surprised on how dark and ominous the dialogue was at the end. _"For Mario... for Peach... and for the world, it was..."_ Truly amazing and dark, just as I imagined it to be.

It's such a cool one because even though there's a similar sequence in Hooktail Castle, the game over is exclusive to the Palace of Shadow/Dark Bones encounter! In the first skeleton horde scene from Chapter 1, the Dull Bones will just kick Mario & co. outside of the room

Yes I was surprised that enemy projectiles can also just hurt you on the field now rather than triggering a first-strike in battle, which makes Danger Mario runs a bit tougher! I don't believe Life Shrooms used to trigger in the overworld either, so that's new to the remake.

I do love that these scenes are included, but I kinda wish there was a little more variation on the actual game over screens, like more like the final boss one with some extra text to show how much mario messed up "And thus, the evil Lord Crump destroyed the Great Boggly Tree in an enormous explosion. The modern Paper Mario games have especially leaned into this idea of body horror for a paper person...Taro Kudo had this to say in a Sticker Star interview: "For battles, we thought about how you could do damage to paper, like by folding it, getting it wet, and burning it. Taking it further, we thought of putting adhesive tape and ripping it off, and fixing it with a tack, and so forth." The bosses in The Origami King were all designed with this in mind, too

For real, I like the original scene still but all that happens is that his normal sprite suddenly appears and the screen starts flipping around. In the Switch version everything darkens with an analog horror filter to build up anticipation, then a giant version of him pops in with a scare chord. I love the creepy ambient track that plays while reading the diary too

I love how the ch 2 time bomb actually gave Crump Elder Puni and Mario+Partner flailing animations 🤲 granted the original's surprisingly a bit funnier when it just freeze-frames n Crump's Remote before he presses it ch. 1's Spike room has a very noticeable change where the spikes are clearly waiting in the last 10 second before it comes down, compared to da og where it kept going down til the timer hit 0 Ch 8's extremely rare Game Over to the Dark Bones has a very nice upgrade with actual Darkness below, so we can actually explicitly see how Mario+partner getting dragged under happens🤔 wack part of "hp reach 0 on field into game over" is that in the og Life shroom's don't save you, you just die, but I really love how Life shrooms actually save you on field in the remake, a much needed upgrade granted Its actually legit very goofy that, if mario's hp reaches 0 from a projectile attack on field, it doesn't play his faint animation but just fades to black, its pretty silly but deff works

After watching this compilation I clicked the link to Koop’s version in the description to see what all these NSGOs looked like in the original version…and I have to say, it’s only after playing through the remake that I realize just how dated the original looks today. By far the most notable differences between the original and remake are the dynamic lighting and animation, which were WAY less present in the original. Now, I’m not saying the original looks bad, mind you-but it certainly looks dated, especially in the face of the remake (though that is, of course, the point of a remake).

Generally, I think Mario gets captured by King Boo. There's only the occasional exception to that, which can often be owed to differences in Japanese original and English translation ("King Boo" aka Boss Boo in Sunshine vs actual King Boo in Luigi's Mansion)

For the Ghost T. game over, I remember talking to him the first time back on the original. Thought I talked to him too early and was about to game over when he threatened to take my life - this was before even being told about the diary. What happens if you lose the Thwomp quizzes?

If you lose to the first one, you have to fight 4 Clefts, and the other quiz 2 X-Yux. Not nearly as bad as the Anti Guy Squad from N64 Paper Mario! They give great EXP, so I lost the quizzes on purpose

It was a thing in the original too! I didn't know about it for the longest time...the portal of darkness that opens up in the floor is exclusive to the remake though, which is interesting.

Wouldn't mario losing the shwonk thwomp's little trivia quiz count? (I never failed it and seen what happens, but given it's a thwomp statue, I think he gets crushed by one)

I tested both of the Thwomp quizzes, and all you have to do is fight a few enemies (more Clefts for the Shwonk one, and then two X-Yuxs for the other. Good way to get more EXP actually). I was totally expecting a game over where he gets crushed too, though!

I don't really hate any of them, but I guess my least favorite of these might be the Dry Bones game over, just because getting swallowed up by the floor kind of comes out of nowhere (I know the Dark Bones mentions falling "into the depths of endless darkness", but it's unclear how/if he summons the portal, and that doesn't even happen in the original)
