The KGF movies are a fictional take on the Kolar Gold Fields. Those movies show gold was discovered in Kolar in the 1950s. But in reality gold has been extracted in the Kolar region for several centuries by various kingdoms. However the proper modern mining operations were started in Kolar in the 1880s by a British Miner named John Taylor III. His enterprise 'John Taylor and Sons' had a huge Tamil workforce (as the Kolar district was situated right in-between the Kannada speaking & Tamil speaking regions of the erstwhile Madras Province). So this movie should probably be set in that period and explore the origins of the KGF.

This movie is based on the true story of Kolar Gold Field ( KGF), which is now located on the borders of Karnataka/ Tamil Nadu. Before India's independence, KGF is part of Tamil region and mostly inhabitated by Tamil tribes, while the British persecuted the Tamils due to their ancestral land being swamped with Golds. The Kannada film KGF franchise is a fictional one and not much related to Kannadiga history in reality. This is Pa. Ranjith's soulful ambition to the showcase Tamil history as it is to the world.
