The New Yankee Workshop

Күн бұрын

Thank you all for your comments, condolences and well wishes. Marian and the family really appreciate it.
Every couple months I would drive up to the Morash household and we’d film a few short videos over a couple of days. Russ always looked forward to it as he loved connecting with fans. We spent more time setting things up than actually filming, ate fantastic food and laughed a lot. I also learned so many things from him and Marian. They are wonderful people.
Most of you know Russ was humble, but every time we sat in his office I was always reminded of his extraordinary career. From Julia Child, Victory Garden, This Old House, and of course, The New Yankee Workshop.
A few weeks ago, we filmed in Russ’s office where we get to see some of his memorabilia before he shows off the desk Norm built for him. It's a nice way to celebrate Russ and everything he accomplished.
Russ, you were a great mentor and friend. I will miss you dearly.

As Russ’ only grandson and namesake (Russell Jack Cohen), these videos are a beautiful archive to always remember what he loved - sharing his passion of woodworking with the world in an accessible way. We will miss you always and know you’re up there with your level, square, and, of course, safety glasses. Love you, Papa. Also, to all the fans of NYW past and current, know that you brought so much joy to my grandfather for many many decades. Even just recently we’d sit together and read your comments - each and every one which would make my grandfather and I incredibly proud of the work he spent a lifetime on. ❤

Here on a cool, foggy and misty Saturday, June 22 in Aberdeen, WA, I just came in from relocating a new pressure-treated post which supports our triple Droll Yankee birdfeeders. Afterwards, my wife wanted me to tie up some of the trailing grapevine branches to the overhead arbor I had built and as I got some gardeners tape from her rickety old potting bench, I told her that my next project would be building her the Norm-built potting bench that Russ Morash had showcased on his KZbin NYW channel awhile back. I then sat down in my easy chair with a pale ale, happily saw this pop up, and eagerly watched it as I always look forward to another NYW segment from Russ. However, my glee went to profound remorse when I unexpectedly saw the fateful ending - Russ Morash 1936-2024 - and am incredibly stunned and saddened by his sudden passing! In retrospect though, I'm also as grateful that I was around in Russ's time and was graced with watching all of the innovative shows that emerged from his brilliance and that also defined my lifelong woodworking avocation. My condolences to Russ's family and Russ, rest in peace! In that wonderful infinity whereby we all become one and where you're up there either gardening or tinkering in the Workshop right now, I will look forward to meeting up with you one day Sir!

I do not believe that enough can be said on the influence Russ had on the DIY movement . He made the book and magazine articles come to life on video at a time when there was little else like it. With each series he produced the bottom line was to show how it was done and what quality gardening, French cooking , home renovation and woodworking looked like and that you could do it also. Glad I was alive to see the first TOH it has been great.
