The BBC Radio 2 family and its listeners have been shocked by the devastating news that one of the station's legendary presenters, Steve Wright, has died aged 69. The DJ had a long and successful career throughout the BBC, most notably for 'Steve Wright in the Afternoon', a show which spanned both Radios 1 and 2 over the course of 41 years.
Over the course of Valentine's Day, the first full day since the news was broken, tributes and music have been played in his memory, much of which brought many of the presenters to tears on air.
There have been so many moments listening today which I'd have loved to share, but this here montage struck me whilst I was out today as the perfect example of why Steve was such a unique sound on the airwaves and there may never be a show quite like his ever again.

The Possie ⚠️ Sid the Manager Mr Mad Ask Elvis Linda Lust Gervais the hairdresser Hopeless Weather girl Damian the Social Worker Barry from Watford The Pub singer would keep us entertained. It was all a tad silly but definitely made the working afternoon pass quicker !! My 1st job after training for 18 months as a Radar engineer in the RAF , was at RAF Locking in 1981. In 1T hangar where Radio 1 would be playing, Steve Wright came on who I'd not heard before. I was instantly hooked. He would go right up close to the microphone and say "C'mon touch your radio and feel the warmth of my sincerity " 💜 I could not believe it when they axed his show in 2022 I cannot listen to Mills instead I listen to my own music collection on Spotify now. Too young to go Steve RIP 💜 I think it is absolute significant that this tragedy has happened in the same week BBC are dismantling Wogan house. Nobody has mentioned this but my belief is Steve couldn't face seeing his studio dismantled and basically destroyed. Dacades of memorabilia GONE. I think Steve died of a broken 💔 RIP Steve. You have been my afternoons since 1981 😢

Bit of a shame you deemed him as too old and therefore worthless, then threw him on the scrapheap along with Ken Bruce. Apparently, he died of a broken heart. How are the Radio 2 audience numbers these days?

I listened to Steve from his Radio 1 days 1980 till his last show on Radio 2, 30 September 2022. The guy just put a big smile on your face even if you were having a bad day or feeling down , he was uplifting ,funny just a nice person wanted to Brighten your Day. I was lucky to see him 1982 Blackpool The Radio 1 Road show 1st Week in August the memories will last for ever . The Sketches the jingles the voice. Can't believe Steve's gone, a total legend. Rest In Peace you kind & wonderful man. The BBC should hang their heads in shame for binning him off. Radio 2 has become Radio 1 in the last year or 2. I've almost stopped listening to Radio altogether as, 1. No Steve Wright, 2. Can't get Ken Bruce's new station. Only put on R2 at lunchtime for JV. There will never be another Steve Wright. Sympathies for his family & anyone who worked with him. 😢

Isn't all this sheepish bbc bashing a bit disrespectful?? I'm sure Steve Wright was fine leaving.Theres many people who get the push every day from jobs they've done for years.Lets celebrate his legacy not get involved in tittle tattle.
