Not sure if anyone's said this before but this musical sort of takes the best and worst traits of the characters and exaggerates it. It's unironically true to their characters, albeit out of proportion.

I still find it amazing that a bunch of college kids came together with $150 (which even back then was not that much) and gave us this clever parody complete with musical numbers (three times mind you!) and yet big budget studios can't tell a decent story anymore. i also think that some of the jokes in here are beyond subtle. Like the way that Harry Potter acts like a meathead jock; it's exactly like how Snape and Draco think Harry Potter acts. Or Draco rolling over all over the set. It's Draco trying to be dramatic and get some Loreal magazine poses because Draco's a drama queen. Or Ron being a complete jerk to Hermione, a) that's exactly how the fanbase viewed Ron for a time and b) this is the trope of the guy who's a jerk and gets the girl anyway. Cho Chang being a sexy Southern Belle, Cedric being the gorgeous but dimwitted guy that Harry has to compete with, Ginny being the awkward girl with a huge crush on Harry. Point is that the actors are taking the character's negative features, exaggerating them for comedy and then applying the traditional teen movie stereotypes. It really is what would have happened if the movies were made by an American movie company trying to cater to the "hip teen" crowd. And yes, High School Musical was popular at the time and I 100% believe that the cast were intentionally parodying it along with Harry Potter. They also have a habit of quoting a bunch of other things from the time. I caught an Aladdin line, an Avatar the Last Airbender line, and a Ghostbusters line but I have to believe there were more
@krissmith8002 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with your points. Also, it is true that Team StarKid members are admitted nerds (as in they admit it and own the fact) which is why there are references to different things. In this one there is a reference from Jurassic Park and the Batman franchise, not to mention allusions to The Lord of the Rings and others down the road. The fact that so many references exist is totally awesome and a staple to Team StarKid's work.
@krissmith8002 жыл бұрын
Another thing I wanted to mention, which is not talked about enough is that we must realize when this was released. It got uploaded to YT in 2009, but was in the works in 2008-2009. When looking at the movie release dates, the musical came our between Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince. That means that some of the information they used had to have come from the books (as well as their own minds) instead of being fully influenced by the films. I FIND this to be an interesting fact that many fail to spotlight, which makes Team StarKid's final result so impressive.

I love this series! Glad you started it! Don’t worry, the ‘find’ joke is not a reference to the books in any way. It was supposed to be a b-plot where Cedric would actually be good at finding stuff which would be crucial to the plot and make Harry respect Cedric more, but they cut most of it aside from his iconic catchphrase. I think it’s a parody on how fans make up stupid facts to make their favorite groups or characters more interesting(fanon)
@montanarose-sings2 жыл бұрын
The thing you need to remember about some of the jokes in this show is that it was made in 2009, which was very much the height of the tumblr "lolz so random" humor era. So some of the jokes are inside jokes between the cast (who were college friends and remain close to this day; they've done a musical almost every year since this first one, and they just keep getting better and better!) and some are basically just thrown in there to be random, and have become iconic over the years. I'm not exaggerating when I say that for a huge number of Harry Potter fans, the Very Potter Trilogy is just as beloved to them as the books or films. The holy trinity of HP content. ⚡️
@krissmith8002 жыл бұрын
I am so happy you are watching this musical. Others may have touched on it, but a few things that hopefully help are that Lavender is indeed Gryffindor, but they put the three girls all in blue Ravenclaw ties to help with the mistaken identity joke. In later Potter musicals I am pretty sure it is fixed and she is wearing the Gryffindor colors. It was just a subtle detail that helped that joke. As for Cedric's FIND, it is just a nuance they give the character that pays off later. I will refrain from spoiling anything, but Team StarKid is known for planting seeds that come back later on. Plus, "Hufflepuffs are particularly good finders" is just a great quote. As for Draco's movements, Lauren Lopez (the girl who plays him) was brainstorming with the writers and stuff about how to make Draco memorable, and they were messing around with her rolling on the floor. They liked the idea that Draco has the inability to control anything including what his body does which can be seen in him failing to stay upright. Thus, it became part of his character here. However, I liked your thought on him being drunk . . . too much Butterbeer. Anyway, I hope that helps and can't wait for more. After this one, there is A Very Potter Sequel and A Very Potter Senior Year (which is done at LeakyCon so they have scripts). If you like their style, maybe you may keep going through their catalogue of shows. Great reaction as always. Can't wait for the next.
@BasilLecher2 жыл бұрын
Well, he would be very weak to butterbeer, familial-wise.
@ForeverDegenerate2 жыл бұрын
@Kris Shepard I believe Draco rolling around on the floor, canonically, is how Starkid represents Draco's inability to dance like Lucius. Basically it's Draco's approximation of dancing. I also believe this is largely rectified by the end of Sequel to justify Lauren not rolling around a lot in Sequel and Senior Year like she does in AVPM. I also believe that part of the canon reason behind Draco rolling around could be tied into revelations about Draco in Sequel which I will not mention here and would urge others to not mention so as not to spoil it for @Veggie Gamer.
@krissmith8002 жыл бұрын
@@ForeverDegenerate Yes. It was mentioned about Draco's inability or failure to do things properly. As you mentioned, he wanted to be like Lucius, but it wasn't successful. That's what I meant about not fully controlling his body. That's all I will say for now before accidentally spoiling anything.

There are actually 2 Hufflepuffs. The other one is sitting right next to Cedric on the bench in the opening Great Hall scene and will later play a very important death eater. The only one who sticks with a “British” accent is Draco (Voldemort and Snape keep whatever voice it is they are doing), everyone else loses it at some point if they had it at all. You have all the major players for this one (save our death eater friend who comes in later), but there will be other characters that show up in the sequels.

I do hope you continue to watch these and post the reactions. I first watched this the summer of 2009 and very quickly memorized almost the whole thing. It's as canon to me now as the books and movies. Watching someone experience it for the first time is an absolute joy. You're in for a wild, hilarious, ridiculous ride. cheers!

sidebar: you should definitely watch starkid performing "back to hogwarts" at alcatraz (azkatraz in the description?). it's honestly adorable (and with clearer sound lmao)

By the way if the editing seems weird at some points, it's because they had some adult jokes in this that they edited out once it became super popular in order to not get in trouble with KZbin. There's one in this when Dumbledore says "I'll keep my eyes open.." and the audience laughs a lot, they were laughing at something else he said there LOL if you know, you know 😂

You have to watch more starkid musicals!! They like triple in production value over the years. I suggest "The guy who didn't like musicals," you'll see some familiar faces, and it's a lot of 'recent' fans (2018-now) first musical. :D I'm one of those fans lmao

Great to see all the HP content out at the moment, I've never seen this before and was going to wait to watch it but when I saw you'd uploaded there was no way I was going to miss reacting to it with you! Its a shame about not being able to send vegan baked goods to your PO Box! I wanted to send you vegan hufflepuff cookies for Christmas! I'll try and think of something else 😄 great reaction as always Veggie, vegan Hufflepuffs unite! 💛🤘🏼🥳

Thanks so much, Rey! Yeah, sorry about the 'no food' thing! XD I just think it is for the best because I really don't want people spending good money on sending my stuff that I can't have. Much appreciated though, and yes, vegan Hufflepuffs for the win!! XD

All of these Starkid Harry Potter musicals are like a hodgepodge of different events from the whole series. I wouldn't expect the characters to necessarily be like they are in the books/movies. It's more like the worst part of those characters only...more or less. They're very funny though, and the songs are great. I think you'll really like the Quirrel/Voldemort parts.

One of the most amazing facts is that Team StarKid is still going strong and giving us great content. Hollywood bigwigs and the like should take note because these guys (and gals), albeit lower budget, knows how to produce really good stuff. The fact that most of the crew is also members of Team StarKid or family/significant others is amazing. Members are also multi-talented and do many things well (singing, dancing, acting, writing, playing instruments, costume design, set design, etc.). Mind blowing.

Oh nice! I’m happy to see tou react to AVPM. It’s fun! My favorite is the third show. I really really hope you’ll react to Puffs too. It’s a retelling of the story from a Hufflepuff point of view, and it’s also amazing, but not a musical. It’s worth the price! I think it’s available on a few platforms.

Lauren Lopez is Draco Malfoy and she is glorious. Fun fact she’s married to the actor who plays Ron.

I was waiting for this even since you finished the movies loool Thanks for checking it out! also the subtitles are helpful for me too because of the old audio and I think this pace is perfectly fine :) The joke with Cedric is that he said "Hufflepuffs are particular good finders", so he keeps on repeating the joke now, but that is something they made up because they thought it would be funny (and it is XD).

I’m THRILLED to see someone else discovering Starkid!! This show truly is amazing at every turn but I do think Quirrell & Voldemort are a major highlight.
