I think Umbridge works like a Trunchbull character. She's a physically strong woman but her personality makes her terrifying. I can see how people might think Umbridge is a stereotype or mocking trans women, but I don't think that's the intention. They reuse actors and Joe Walker played the villain last play so, he was put into the villain role again. It's only because the audience knows who the actor is playing Umbridge, that it leans into the Dumbledore mistaking her for a man because of her physique. I mean his Voldemort was abs out, so his Umbridge is a guns show-- I think it's just a part of the characters he brings. Plus canon Umbridge is a pink monstrosity so that's a bit on the nose.

Same. Also on an unrelated note, he is working that dress and wig. Like I know who the actor is, but when I see the performance, all I can see is a normal scary Umbridge.

When I heard that there was controversy surrounding this musical, this portrayal of Umbridge never entered my mind as something people would get offended about. I always figured, like you said, that the joke started from that the actor who played the villain in the previous one has to play the villain again, so they wrote his physicality into the character. The idea of this being any kind of mockery of trans people never entered my head. I would never have made the connection if someone didn't tell me I mean, the musical never says that this Umbridge is a trans woman, they clearly state she's a woman; it's just that she happens to be played by a man and she happens to be an extremely fit woman with a "drill sergeant" mentality (can't think of another word for it). Which does not seem that out of the ordinary for this troupe. Draco Malfoy, Dean Thomas, and Crabbe are all male characters played by women. Clearly the cast has some limits on the amount of men/women that they have so actors sometimes need to play characters of the opposite sex. I always figured that something similar happened with Umbridge but they decided to make the fact that the actor is as muscular as he is part of her character Again, I'm surprised that of all the jokes in these musicals THIS is the one that got people riled up. I honestly think what happens to this character at the end is way worse in terms of things that don't age well. But Umbridge is awesome; she's funny, she's terrifying, she's can rip your head off, and apparently can do a sick musical number.
@CoRLex-jh5vx Жыл бұрын
@@brianalambert1192Good point with comparing it to Draco's casting. If people wanted to read into it more, they could say that Draco being stereotypically feminine while being played by a female actor is a dig against trans men somehow, but nobody does because thats clearly not the point being made. Umbridge is just a fun twist on the original character, and happens to be played by a male actor. If the joke was going to be "haha trans women are manly", while obviously a joke Starkid would never make, they could've made it a lot more obvious than "I am woman, hear me smash".
@Angelo_MS11 ай бұрын
Of course that wasn't the intention, i don't think anyone would ever argue that, but "biological male dressed as a woman being abusive to children and sexually forcing herself onto people" is 100% a pejorative trans stereotype, which is especially hurtful once you consider Rowling's bigotry

Umbridge is definitely interesting… they deffo didn’t intentionally do anything transphobic, but it is can certainly be taken that way, and might be insensitive. The cast and crew are amazing and kind, they’ve spoken about their regrets for the character, and that there was no meaning for it to be taken such a way- but it’s good that they apologised and accepted the criticism (unlike certain other authors lol) Criticising and debating a piece of media means that you value and enjoy it- and whilst there are some eek moments in AVPM/S/SY, the good nature and heart that goes into every Starkid production really shines through and makes lifelong fans!! 💜 💜

I personally never liked the Umbridge portrayal even before JK showed her true colours. I think it's because the whole portrayal it's basically constantly suggesting that if you're a strong woman you: a) are a freak b) are probably just covering up self esteem issues c) hate other women, especially the pretty ones d) are probably mentally and emotionally unstable e) can never be seen as a real women (as shown by everyone confusing her for a man) And I definitely don't want to say that that's what Starkid wanted to say! But for me they just beat the jokes too long and too hard, so that it just gets increasingly more uncomfortable for me😕 That said I still enjoy the rest of AVPS and senior year is actually my favorite. And since they also openly acknowledged that the portrayal was problematic I'm definetly not holding it against them either🙂🙂

They really kept the plot secret for this, so the time travel reveal - that the sequel was, in fact, also a prequel - was so exciting when it released in 2010! Of course, time travel isn't quite so easy in the actual Harry Potter universe, but this show really solidified the AVPM-verse as its own thing for me, separate from the books or films. But "Home" is such a beautiful song that I could see the real Harry singing, that's how good it is. they upped the production quality and plot maturity nicely now that they knew the world was watching, while still keeping much of the college fan parody charm.

I think some of the problem is that they are kinda making fun of more strong and muscular women, and some of the humor around Umbridge is the man in a dress joke which is transphobic. So I can see why people take issue with it. I see it as a product of the times like the Cho Chang and the teachers jokes that have aged really poorly, but then again I’m not trans so I can’t really tell if this is offensive or not.
@islasullivan3463 Жыл бұрын
Especially given all the transphobic sh*t Rowling has said. (Yes, this was made well before she revealed herself as a terf but it’s still what new fans of this are gonna possibly associate it with).
@holyalpaca750 Жыл бұрын
@@islasullivan3463 I don't think Joe being in a dress was ever really the butt of the joke though. Or rather, the jokes weren't supposed to be funny _because_ he's a man in "women's clothes". I think it's different from the transphobic portrayal of the old movies I'm assuming that you're talking about, where the sole act of a man being in a dress was supposed to be the "joke" itself. I always thought Umbridge's scenes were "funny" because of her psychopath-like behaviour and because of Joe's absolutely terrifying facial expressions. I'm not saying her portrayal in this is perfect and there is nothing you could improve upon and neither am I defending that Starkid never wrote anything problematic before, but I do think we shouldn't automatically label things as anti-LGBTQ+ or x-phobic because they have a surface level resemblance to something offensive, but may or may not actually contain the thing that made it offensive. I think that approach itself is a very limiting view of the issue of problematic representation in media. A little edit: With that being my opinion, I also agree we shouldn't speak on behalf of trans people. At the end of the day they're the ones to know whether Umbridge's portrayal is offensive or not.

@@holyalpaca750 That also makes sense and I don't believe that was Starkid's intentions with Umbridge's character either, but I can see why people have problems with it. Specifically with the muscular women is that media often portrayed them as presenting hyper masculine, evil, and borderline crazy in comparison to the "good" traditionally feminine characters like Trunchbull and Miss Honey from Matilda, However Umbridge does sort of subvert the trope because she presents as hyper feminine showing how her villainy stems not from not conforming to societies views but from the abuse and sexism she experienced as a child. (It should be noted that mentally ill people are far more likely to be the victims of violence than perpetrators).

My thoughts on squibs is, just as two muggles can have a wizard kid, two wizard parents can have a muggle kid. So a squib is a social constructed term for a muggle with wizard parents. So the chance for two wizards to have a wizard kid is much higher than if two muggles have kids, since you get genes from both parents, thus making the wizard gene hereditary. So I don’t think Muggles can have a squib kid because squib is a muggle with wizard parents, meaning a squib If these thoughts are true/real, it would then explain why some wizard families (like the Malfoys) are against muggle-born and marriage with muggles
@amberdawn5372 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. A "squib" in a Muggle family is just another Muggle. Squib is simply a term used to differentiate them as people who don't have any magic of their own but are still born into the Wizarding World. A close real world equivalent would be CODAs (children of Deaf adults). Many CODAs are hearing, but they still grow up culturally Deaf or in a deaf environment and the CODA label is a way to signify that lived experience. Taking out the stigma surrounding squibs, it's an easy label for non-magical kids with magical parents that still grow up among magic. Which is why the squib label can't apply to Muggle children with Muggle parents, the cultural aspect of the label doesn't apply.
@jessicaleser8822 Жыл бұрын
The difference between muggles and squibs though, is that they can see through anti-muggle spells. Like the caretaker at Hogwarts is a squib, but he can still SEE Hogwarts whereas muggles would see a run down dilapidated building.
@amberdawn5372 Жыл бұрын
@@jessicaleser8822 Maybe? I can't remember if it has been confirmed anywhere that no muggles can see Hogwarts or other magical locations, but if there is I would love to know. I've always viewed it more as most muggles don't believe in real magic which is why repelling them/hiding the magic works. But if they know it exists then they would be able to see it, kind of like how the Fidelius charm can hide things until you're told it's there. Main reason being that we know Muggleborns and mixed-magic marriages exist and I find it hard to believe that those muggle partners or parents wouldn't be able to see through those spells by just knowing there is something to see, even if they have to actually get past the magical perimeter before they can see the real place (like crossing through the wall on platform 9 3/4). Otherwise they wouldn't be able to visit Diagon or the train platform and I'm pretty sure they can. So in that case squibs would see Hogwarts because they already know it exists, not necessarily that magic recognizes them as different to regular muggles.
@jonathanlind8370 Жыл бұрын
There are charms preventing muggles to see Hogwarts, however knowing that it’s there can be a good reason for them not being able to see it as you said. Then we can’t forget that Jakob was able to see Hogwarts in “secrets of Dumbledore”, it could be because he was told it was there. I don’t remember the scene son would have to rewatch it. - Then again it might be nothing since the fantastic beasts franchise is full of continuity errors.

In regards to the question of whether a squib could be born to muggles: squib is a word used to refer to a magical born child who has no magic themselves therefore no, a squib could however theoretically be born to a magical parent and a muggle parent though it would likely depend on the magical parent's bloodline what they were called as the word squib does seem to have some negative connotations due to its connection with blood purity so a family with less severe blood purity ideals may choose to refer to them simply as a muggle rather than place the connotations associated with the word squib on said child

Of course, this was done before that whole thing and they said in an "interview" that Umbridge was portrayed the way she is because they wanted her to be scary and intimidating. Also, Dumbledore mistaking her as a man can be seen as problematic, but everything pays off. To my understanding on the muggles having a squib question; a squib is the term for a non-magical person born into a magical family. Similar to how a wizard can be born into a muggle family. Two muggles having a non magical child is just the norm so there is no use for the term as it essentially refers to a muggle being born to a wizard.

I'm so glad you decided to continue these plays and also did it much faster! :D The audio will get much better in later plays, the next Potter one is gonna be WAY better but Darren's (Harry) microphone had some problems so his audio is the only one messed up :( Voldemort kind of died but kind of didn't? But he went into hiding with Quirrell so his followers don't know he is still around. It amazes me that you pay so much atention to the "background" characters like the weasleys, their actors are sometimes underapreciated 💖 Fun fact: Arthur, like some other people have comented, is played by one of the main writers/leaders, but he is also the sorting hat and scarfy, since he used to be the designated puppeteer, he also created all the puppets by hand. Also yes, Voldemort is absolutedly Umbridge :D

Jamie Lyn Beatty played Ginny, and is Rita Skeeter

im 7 months late to the convo but I'd say muggles cant have a squib in the same way that Wizards cant have a muggle! Squibs are specifically non-Magical children born from Magical parents and muggles are non-magical children born from non-magical parents, So muggles can only make more muggles lol (or 'Mudbloods')

I never notices that lucius and cedric were played by the same character. Rita Skeeter is played by the same person as Ginny too. If you like reacting to hp stuff I'd recommend potter puppet pals.

my fave of the HP musicals, my favorite song in this one seems to be hit or miss with reactors, hoping you dig it when it appears.

If you love Lupin you should definitely read ‘All the young dudes’ after finishing HP. It’s a legendary fanfiction about the Marauders era, written from Lupin’s POV.

Reeta Skeeter is played by the same actress as Ginny.

I love the music in this one! It has some of my favourite songs (tho my all time fave is in AVPSY). I think Umbridge had potential but it just went poorly. There are several AVPS Umbridge moments I love but too many that just don't work which kinda ruins it.

A squib is a child born to witches or wizards who can't do magic, so by definition, no. Two muggles can't have a squib as a child.

...WAIT: you're watching Starkid now?!?!? GO DOWN THIS RABBIT HOLE AT ONCE!!!! Honestly, I personally really want to see your reaction Twisted more than most but there's barely anything made by Starkid (if at all) that isn't worth it.

a lot of trans people are upset about the portrayal of umbridge in this, especially since she's played by a man (and that her masculinity gets used as a joke a lot). i agree that it could have been handled better (and at the time this was made people weren't as aware anyway) but as a trans person i honestly don't have an issue with it. I think people are more upset by it than they need to be. jk rowling on the other hand i am extremely offended by

I think much of it amounts to association. The fact that she's from a play adapted (loosely) from Rowling's books puts certain themes in a worse light than they would otherwise. While some of the show's characters don't exactly come across as great people, I don't think the show's actual script crosses the line into being outright hateful.
