I love that Jon does his best to remind us that while things in the US are very gloom and doom, and tense....that we should be thankful for the things we do have, compared to many out in the world - we are lucky and should be thankful.

One year a farmer neighbor came by and told us to get all the pumpkins we wanted. The season was over and he was going to turn the field. We filled up the barn. Every farm animal loved eating pumpkins. Horses, cows, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, turkeys and geese. All ate pumpkin. We did too. Baked, boiled, and sauteed. Sliced, diced, and mashed. Sweet or savory. A super veggie.

Regarding the pumpkin pie, in the early 1980's I was experimenting with the whole pumpkin to make my own filling instead of the store boughten stuff. The pioneer in me I suppose. Then the Little House on the Prairie came out with a Cookbook and I used that recipe for a really long time, 30 plus years... I'm going to try the one with the molasses and no nutmeg...

I made the pumpkin pie at about 16 minutes in the video, the one without the nutmeg that John put some into anyway...and used a bit of honey because it was just too boring with molasses only. It's pretty good. I did not use as much milk because it would have been too wet. The moisture in my pumpkin must have been more.

Some pie crusts were probably more for cooking it inside something to contain the filling, more like a vessel to cook in. I'm from New England, here and New York people celebrated a Thanksgiving yearly before Lincoln made it a national holiday. Other states would celebrate their own days, some years, not every year, though. I'm actually from Massachusetts, so Thanksgiving is huge here, lol. PS... I am so afraid of pie crusts, hahahahaa, I've never made one. I'm not really a baker though, I'm more into cooking, roasting... I am going to try to master and good tasing pie crust this year. I really cannot stand the taste of store pie crusts. One thing I can make is baklava and spanakopita, I'm Greek and not afraid of phyllo, though there's no way I'd hand make that. My mom made a phylo apple pie and it was crispy and delicious just using the layers to make a crust. Lol she had forgotten to buy crust and didn't have the time to make one, so she ad libbed and it was amazing. 😂❤

I have read/digested about 40-50 first person accounts/journals pertaining to the early to mid 1800s, specifically looking for references to the treatment of what we (today) think of as traditional holidays. Basically, Christmas, July 4th, and election days have a “holiday” feel but Thanksgiving and Easter are just not mentioned. Halloween is a 20th century invention. Even Christmas has fluctuated between being illegal or sacred (especially in the 1700s). Spanish-speaking cultures or peoples do an Easter/Passion Week sort of thing as well as a February “sneak attack” egg game (early Monterey, California). Mostly, men ran the holiday experiences, including decorations, until women’s magazines threw the responsibilities of making the holidays something special for the family in the laps of the women (at home rather than going visiting and “punch sampling”) by the time of the California gold rush.
