In an interview, Eli Roth said the vibe he was going for with "Thanksgiving" is a modern remake of a lost cult slasher flick that was banned and all copies are gone with the only surviving footage being the trailer

@@mattneffI completely agree. It should’ve been set in the 70s with gritty cinematography, but it would’ve cost more because of it. The budget was only $15 mill. I’ve also heard it’s full of dark humor and satire, so I’m glad it keeps the spirit of Grindhouse cinema at least.

Dempsey breathing like Billy from Black Christmas at the begining, a killer klown knocking a turkey mascots head clean off, baking and basting a human carcass like when Billy eats his christmas cookies. The Scream vibes crashing through walls like micheal myers, throwing a hay rake as a spear like Jason. The Dinner scene towards the end also gave TCM vibes. And i mean John Carver great F'n name. We've had so many horror movies based around Halloween which makes sense, and fun twists on Christmas which is interesting like Krampus, but I don't think there are many Thanksgiving horror films. Which...Is surprising cause you would think that would be the perfect time of year to set a horror/slasher film around. Everyone in the same house together, tensions already high cause SOMEONE had to mention godforsaken politics....It would be great to see more films based around Thanksgiving tbh. The poor holiday is like the middle child; often overlooked.

I do wish they had kept the 70's/80's distorted retro aesthetic and tongue-firmly-in-cheek humor of the Grindhouse trailer. But some studio exec was probably like, "Eli, modern audiences aren't gonna wanna see a movie that looks like that!" Still, it's a good time, and it's about time we got a solid Thanksgiving horror movie because it has always felt like the one holiday that has been neglected the most. When Thankskilling is the best it has to offer, you know you're severely lacking in the horror department.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to release a director's cut that has that esthetic
@artofsam10 ай бұрын
Should’ve definitely been shot in 16mm and not that clean plastic looking digital format that’s become so overused now. A film like It Follows comes to mind where it could have still taken place in modern day but just give it a retro vibe and minimise any usage of social media and phones so the technology is ambiguous.

“Thanksgiving” was amazing!! I want Eli Roth the direct a future “Scream” movie.
@brianmurphy548310 ай бұрын
There is a reason for this not being so grindhouse-y. This is supposed to be a "reboot" of a film that was never made. The original Thanksgiving trailer took place in the 60s I believe. This Thanksgiving takes place present day. So it's also a joke on the modernization of reboots as well. Which I found to be pretty fun.

This was actually not that bad, going in I was thinking that this would be one of those movies that sounds like a fun premise but is ultimately just a crappy waste of potential, but it was actually pretty enjoyable, I think the most entertaining thing about it are those times where you get to see the Thanksgiving style ways in which these people are killed, it’s pretty ridiculous but at the same time fun, I also thought the opening was pretty funny with this super chaotic Black Friday scene, and this is a movie that definitely knows what it is because it really doesn’t waste any time getting into the meat of things, the movie pretty much moves at a lightning fast pace and really doesn’t have any unnecessary fat on it, it’s not perfect though, I didn’t really think any of the lead characters were all that interesting, the main girl attempts to be with a very shallow setup for what’s going on with her but it just failed to engage me, and the others are just a bunch of assholes that you hate being around, and even though I’m not someone who’s bothered by gore and did find enjoyment in some of it in this movie I think that overall in terms of the gore and the meanness of the characters this movie did kinda overcook it to me, which I know is confusing because I said I do find a lot of gory movies fun but let me explain, the kind that I get more enjoyment out of are movies like Brightburn or Ready Or Not, where it’s done as quick fun little moments that keep a level of composure on things and deep down you understand that it’s meant to just be thrilling, whereas with Eli Roth’s movies he makes them in this super nasty, unpleasant fashion that’s meant to just gross you out, in Brightburn you have a man’s jaw fall off in a really gross but cool looking way but that’s all, whereas with the type of filmmaker that Eli Roth is he probably would’ve had the kid pick up the severed jaw and eat it or something because it’s just grosser, it’s fun gore vs gratuitous gore, so those moments I wasn’t too big on but when it’s a little more in the pure spectacle pocket I did enjoy it, so as a whole I did end up having a pretty good time with this movie, which did surprise me because I was honestly expecting it to be a shit fest but for what it is it’s not bad, the movie has some fun carnage, it knows what it is and doesn’t have much fat on it and even though it’s not the type of gory movie that’s usually my cup of tea this movie delivered a pretty fun time. 6/10

My favorite slasher post Scream is actually Valentine (2001). This movie does take some things from that movie I believe with the way the killer is dressed and executes. Also the killer reveal is similar predictable. With Valentine (2001) the kills get creative, there's some thought put into it, I prefer it slightly. Thanksgiving (2023) has some scenes clearly resembling other horror movies from the past. It's so obvious, you can't unsee it

If they ever make another Alien or Predator movie, I want it to have crackle, scratches and distortions like it was made on actual film in the mid-eighties...

The movie was ok, but it needed a better score. Maybe they couldn't afford Danny Elfman lol!🖤🦇👻🎃

So, since Violent Night made a splash last year, we get It's a Wonderful Knife and Thanksgiving this year. Of course, I had no idea either of these movies were coming. Any other surprises coming this year? Rudolph the Red-nosed Butcher, maybe?

Is one of my favorite teen slasher horror movies from the early 2000s. Starring Denise richards.

I LOVED every bit of this movie. It's an excellent slasher with very good and gory kills. I do wish it'd kept the grindhouse filter and vibe but it still worked without it. I could see this being a yearly Thanksgiving rewatch for me just like Black Christmas and Krampus are during Xmas. I love Eli Roth, which I understand he's not everybody's cup of tea, but I think this is certainly his best work in a long time.

---> *_The Black Friday movie you are wanting to see exists; it's called "Black Friday" from 2021, starring Bruce Campbell._*

I'm not looking forward to see Eli Roth's take on Borderlands Even though it has Craig Mazin as one of the writers, he asked for his name to be removed from the credits And be replaced by the name of "Joe Crombie"

Eli Roth directed The House with a Clock in Its Walls. I am sure Jeremy likes that film.

AVI ARAD will ruin Eli Roth's BORDERLANDS The same way he ruined TASM2, UNCHARTED and MORBIUS And is probably gonna ruin LEGEND OF ZELDA as well

We shall see. I didn’t dislike TASM2.

I feel the same about Eli Roth. The fake trailer didn't do anything for me (except disgust), but I'll check this one out when I'm in the mood for a slasher.

Tying for my favorite "post-Scream" slashers are I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) & Urban Legend. I don't know if "post-Scream" is supposed to mean after that era or after Scream 1, but... they came out after Scream 1 😅
