Thank you Thao for such a beautiful wonderful song. I'm typing this with tears rolling on my cheeks. I'm also a first gen Vietnamese American born after the war from a South Vietnamese parents who lost their city in the light of day... The lyrics... the stories my mom told me, the pictures of her fashionable self in 1973 with high fashion posing next to a South Vietnamese aircraft with big big big sunglasses... and then the pain they had to go through... Then "Why would a million dare sink in the sea?" got me so bad... I couldn't see the computer screen with my eyes full of tears... Thank you so much for such a beautiful piece.

I lost my city in the light of day Thick smoke Helicopter blades Heaven on earth I've never moved so fast You'll never know the fear your mama has I know your father can't call anymore He never meant to be a man of war But we found freedom what will you do now Bury the burden baby make us proud I lost my city in the light of day Thick smoke Helicopter blades Why would I bother to remember when Our people baby die and live again Look at this one I want you to see Fashion was high My hair was so long This was maybe '73 You know I have been adored by good and kind men They sent their love with poetry By day I gave grand speeches At night, like you We danced to be free I lost my city In the prime of my time Mud Silk And the dust of life I was a diamond of the embassy It doesn't matter what I meant to be Girl you come from the fortunate ones Gold Sky And a first born son We don't have words for the way you have grown We'll always feed you You can always come home Why would a million dare sink in the sea? Why would a million dare sink in the sea? Why would a million dare sink in the sea? Why would a million dare sink in the sea? I don't want to say anymore But I have been here before I don't want to say anymore Find what you need I don't want to say anymore But I have been here before I have earned this sorrow Mine to keep I lost my city in the light of day Thick smoke Helicopter blades Why would I bother to remember when Our people baby die and live again I lost my city in the light of day Thick smoke Helicopter blades Heaven and earth I've never moved so fast You'll never know the fear your mama has I know your father can't call anymore He never meant to be a man of war But we found freedom what will you do now Bury the burden baby make us proud

Enjoyed this piece when I first started listening to the album a few weeks ago. When I finally started paying attention to the lyrics, I was floored. Crushed. Heartbroken. What a beautiful tribute to the loss, sorrow, and afterlives of war. The more I listen to it, the more I'm brought to tears. Wishing for peace and healing for all whose lives have been shaken by violence.

I first listened to this song on youtube and thought it was ok. But I recently had the privilege to see Thao perform it live at Asbury Hall in Buffalo, NY. Hearing the story behind the song, seing and hearing the raw emotion made me appreciate it so much more and touched my heart to tears. The song made me think of my own mother and her struggles for freedom from Apartheid South Africa to make it to America and all the refugees and migrants risking their lives for freedom. I still think the live version was better, but now listening to the recorded version has so much more meaning. I sometimes use The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Ann Fadiman about Hmong refugees in USA. Fadiman brings up the Vietnam war, displaced people, and refugees. Next time I teach it I will definitely use this song as an introduction and another source . Thank you Thao, from a fellow daughter of a refugee!

This music video, this song is so impactful and emotionally provocative, in a good way. I saw one of the comments about how this song speaks a truth to the intergenerational trauma of the Vietnam War and just from the lyrics being paired with the visuals, I can definitely resonate with that, so much so that I found myself to be very emotional, moved to tears from your song, Chi Thao. This was awesome. I hope to meet and work with you one day

Thao's back! It's a great vid, and the lyrics, such a powerful way of expressing so much emotion and story all at once and so beautifully done, it's almost hard to notice how deeply it speaks about mourning, if someone's not paying attention to the lyrics… i love it but now i'm crying 💜

@@chronic_johnson_a.r.a.b In a certain way, her whole album Man Alive was about the intergenerational trauma of the American war on Vietnam. Thao's family was very much shaped by her parents flight from Vietnam & she's doing the work of healing with her music. This song is the most graphically connected to her mother's story of fleeing that I know of.
