Thappad can not generalized for all situations. Creating one hypothetical situation and painting one black or white inference on the whole intersectionality of human emotions and its play in relations is a terrible disservice to the young minds. Human relations are best understood or explored in the shades of grey. Extreme objectivity in the realm of passion, love, faith and psyche of humans is very rudimentary and base. That conscious Thappad in Kabir Singh, though a culmination of extreme human emotion and unjustified violence bordering madness, was still so real and relatable in the context that even if you change the genders in the situation it would showcase the vulnerability of soulful relations. While Taapsee's thappad may not likely be a conscious decision by that partner, howsoever both are wrong but can not be compared at a deeper level. Preeti had to judge that thappad by a man who almost went insane to be with her and was ready take on whole world for her and in that process didn't even care for his self respect in front of her family. There has to be some minimum space for redemption, reparation and forgiveness for emotional security in any relation. Even she slaps Kabir twice in the movie. Even parents slap their children. The extreme sociological narrative on relations devoid of any semblance of psychological, biological and anthropological elements is damaging young hearts.

@@milan35151 itni English to nhi aati but i completely agree with you. In this movie it has only shown women being the victim of domestic violence whereas in reality men are also the victims. Planting this seed in the young generation that women are only the oppressed one and generalizing this is very misleading. In India the rate of committing suicide is high among married men than married women. And mostly because of falsely accusation of dowry. Sometimes it's the entire family of the man who commits suicide. Bollywood should make movies on such serious issues by having a thorough knowledge on that topic.

Mr. Sinha (IMO) is making the point that even if the husband is well-intentioned, the response reflects the society's viewing of household work as menial chores while the bread-winning activites outside the domestic realm as being more dignified.

The last scene where she finally tells the family what she has been experiencing is so much more than an underlining. I think that scene is the character's catharsis. Her emotions burst out. Also, as human beings, when you move on from a certain thing in life, you run through many emotions. Which is why the concept of farewell also exists. She must have gotten reminded of all the good and bad times, she spent in that house. It's a beautiful scene.

After the slap I was so annoyed to watch her doing her house chores with so much patience for so many days even when he didn't show any apology.She might've expected some of his apology and some support from her mother-in-law while she was taking a further step for separation. Patriarchy is a school of thought/way of life. Doesn't afflict a certain gender, instead it attacks those who subscribe. This film has stayed with me for a while. My favourite scene and no one seems to mention is when her father shouts at her brother for misbehaving with his girlfriend! The calm mild mannered father becomes soo angry!! Lovely scene!

I really liked it too. I rewatched Dangal a couple of days ago and then I watched Thappad yesterday and suddenly I am just bursting with love for good dads lmao. Like, genuinely good dads who try hard not those who do the bare minimum and get praise. Good parenting is so important, but it is easy to forget that sometimes.

1) Tapsee is the one who has spoken 65-70% in the interview. 2) if you watched his other interviews, you wouldn't have said this. He is a gem and he accepts that even though he tries his best, some things have been so normalised that we don't even notice it.

He didn’t say that it wasn’t hard to act in that scene or to bear the slap. He is saying that even if the slap didn’t look physically impactful it would be okay because conceptually it would have made the impact. He knows that it was extremely hard for the actors to bear the violence, like he mentioned that he hugged the other couple after the slapping scenes in apology. He is empathetic and thankful towards the actors for doing those scenes, being apologetic isn’t necessary because the film demands it.

I watched the movie last weekend, I would definitely have edited out the last 5 minutes of the movie. Probably ended it with the husband watering the dying plants before he left for London. I haven't seen the film yet, but will definitely do so after watching this interview. (I know I wasn't supposed to but I did anyway.) From what I understand, it's about zero tolerance to abuse. I wish such movies had been made earlier in my time. The kind of #SocietalConditioning we go through is simply phenomenal, and our tolerance levels just keep rising till something ultimately breaks: either life itself or the spirit. I'm glad these issues are being made into films because they hold such power to change society. I hope the next one Anubhav Sinha takes up is on speciesism. That's the root of all evil/hatred on Earth. All "isms" are rooted in it. Teach a child to respect all beings and there would be no classism, sexism, casteism, homophobia, antisemitism, xenophobia, gender discrimination, or the accepted and legalized systemic violence against animals and the violation of their rights and liberty. Address the root and see a better world.

That in not true at all. Misuse of domestic violence law especially in child custody matter as has been acknowledged. Such false allegations harm not only the men against whom the allegations have been made but women who file genuine complaints. There have been discussions around making domestic law of the country gender neutral by law enforcement agencies as well as the civil society.

Flaws are , depression! @@moluphi6226 okay so the example i gave was purely subjective to the movie and the male in the movie. He has not killed anyone, he doesnt understand that hes abusive and this behaviour is not okay. Yes i agree intent does not justify behaviour and i 100% dont justify misogyny in any way. But only by understanding can we even think of changing na? Not by fleeing the situation. And yes calling out beating matters because, by your own arguement, in the movie, the majority of people say "it was just a slap" so like taapsee said, its so deeply ingrained that the oppressor also doesnt realise that hes oppressing someone. And you are mostly talking from an outsider's perspective. Im talking as family, as someone who loves and vowed to understand the other, would you not empathize with the situation which the other is in? How would he know any better if he's been raised in that certain way and the society has ingrained it so subtly yet deeply in every crevice of everyday activities? ANANDITA PANYAM physical violence is Beating A CRIME Which might kill you. I haven’t compared theft to killing. Killing someone isn’t far from physical violence . And it is not a “flaw”. Because my parent taught so. This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard , I have guessed you clearly haven’t actually watched the movie to say that the person hasn’t realised and LEARNED from its mistake. Their is nothing wrong and uncompassionate of someone to not reason with someone who has experienced emotional abuse . You have taken a VOW to UNDERSTAND each other. It’s a 2 way street sis. Not one . PS watch the movie. “Cheating is not a valid argument. “ The movie consists of emotional abuse. And the actress trying to reason with the husband . It was very obvious in the trailer that the women said along the lines that “that one slap opened my eyes to the things happening in past...” which is emotional abuse. Again being a emotionally and physically abusive NO normal Indian parent go out of their way to teaches that tbh. You can share and learn the values . My family is misogynistic too .With severe double standards but as a boy they havent taught me or my brother anything remotely normalisation of physical and verbal abuse. And it wasn’t the case in the movie too. You can definitely recover from cheating husband . And reason with them and say never again . But it is 100 difficult to recover from an emotional abuser. You have a deeply ingrained problem to think that abuse is fine and cheating is not . Abuse is wayyyyyyyy worse I have seen it. Marriage is a 2 way street. Please teach your kids better things . Seeing so many women themselves saying that emotional abuse is fine it was just a slap without considering how that 1 slap and emotional abuse makes you so disturbed and hard to get over. Easier said than done. Pleases don’t teach your daughter and son this bs to be fine with 1 slap and emotional abuse .

Yes, i havent watched the movie but that does not mean the scenario itself is limited to only the ones who have watched it. His beating is clearly the product of many years of conditioning and yes, you do have the choice of making that reason enough to leave. But i was just asking, flaw is not in him, its a societal flaw in itself. And he's not a victim but he is a product of such a society. If you didnt know, there was a point when aayushman khurana told his wife tahira "its okay you dont have to work. Im the man, I'll take care" which is quite misogynistic by his own admission and general consensus. But it takes time for a person to understand and admit his flaws amd mistakes. That is not just a momentary understanding. It takes a lot of unlearning. Beating is crime yes, but my question was simple: would you leave the situation by divorcing the person or would ammend a human in the family that you loved and bring an actual change? It has to do with emotional strength also, if you arent capable or willing you have all the rights to leave them. It was just a moral question. And the reason i call it compassionate is it takes balls to understand a criminal. Check out Margret Atwood and the story of handmaid's tale. The protagonist is literally raped repeatedly but also recognizes the issue in the system is not just with how we treat women but also what we teach the men. And she empathizes. You seem to be missing the whole point all together. But sure, you're entitled to your own opinion.

How is it toxic masculinity? which part of the Interview made you think they are implying that? All they said was he knows how to be a good son/man of the house but he isn't trained to be and to show that he isn't trained they used the blood sugar n tea leaves scene. (Spoiler youll understand it when you watch that particular scene.) There was nothing about toxic masculinity in this movie. It was about how people are conditioned to and about gender roles. Every character has an arc here. It's a very good movie, do watch it. I'd want to read your opinion after watching the moive.

This movie has managed to in fact humanize the abuser and portray him as a victim of poor social conditioning, as most abusers are. There is not an ounce of toxic masculinity in Sinha's character, he is not a villain and not portrayed as such.

Coming to my above statement, I was commenting on the banter between the guests and the presenter @ 12:00 when they speak about a certain “Tea Leaves scene” - which probably happens in the movie.

i watched the film last night and though overall its a fair film...but runs out of stream in the last 15,20 odd minutes.....the scene between tapsee's brother and his girlfriend..where the former apologizes to her looks too chessy....as anubhav sinha himself says" thoda cheese dalna padta hai"' it was that...it reminded me of moral lesson films of the 90's like damini and others.. There are certain reasons according to me where it could have been even better: 1 Right from the start of the film its very clear that its a tricky subject...not exactly on domestic violence nor exactly on A women charting her own path..post marriage...Sinha didnt want to take the former path..and neither he took the other path..which mahesh bhatt took years ago in AARTH- so that left the films and its tonality in a lurch.....She doesn't love this guy as she once used to ..she says.. but she neither shows any kind of resistance or diffidence in front of him..when you get hit by someone you develop a sort of antipathy towards them..you cant stand straight in their presence...even if you slept with them ...None of pannu's body language showed that discomfort.Her character was supposed to exhibit a sort of hopelessness towards the protagonist...on the contrary it kept showing that she is hinting at him to say a simple sorry....and if he had said it everything would have been all right.. i think pannu failed to exhibit that sort of complexity through her body language....doubts,fears,,complex emotions..confusion ...no matter how many shots sinha had of her looking outside of the window..her note expression didn't show any expression other than of being hurt... a bit of anger mixed with disgust and pride would have really helped in clearly enunciating the inner turmoil of the character.In this regards little could be done..for we Bollywood people always form our character without giving them any sort of history...in this regards i am reminded of Ram Madhvani's neerja..where the story structure established that the past of the character[her abusive husband story} set up the story of the present and the decisions where she would be taking in her present crisis situation..i found that flaw even with Raaji where the makers berefted the character of her flawed past..[former lover] ....also her accent of punjabi laced hindi which she carries in all of her films...kind of kept bringing the real tapsee into the foray and stopped short her efforts to become Ammu. also surrounded by superior actors like ratna..kumud..geetika,, the lawyer kind of undermined her effort...i think she was more effortless in pink 2 dia mirza...i still cant understand what her 8 odd minutes part added to the mix....the problem in this universe of sinha was that he inherently took all women who were good Samaritans...none of them were a funny self loathing alcholic or a kind of an imperfect women.it was a case of everyone wearing the same shade of white which tonally and emotionally blighted the power which different characters could have brought.. A different ending like the husband agreeing to the mistake but the court ruling out in favour of husband could have really been an anti-climax or may be one of them getting involved in an accident and the other one being forced to take care of them ...something like an open ended ending would have reallly dampened the box office prospect of it..but would have added to the creative quotient of the film. 3 The simplistic ending....this has been an area where sinha has been struggling off lately ..the inherent desire to end everything on a happy note ....to give a picture perfect postcard ending..the husband comes apologizes to Ammu....the brother appologizing to his g.f...i mean there isnt anything inherently wrong in it...but to me it was the simple way of chickening out

I agree with the apologizing part. Mainly because I don't think people just change, just like that. But that boyfriend guy changing was just not convincing. Also, I had a lot of issues with this movie like you mentioned which all showed signs of chickening out, but it's a decent movie and a good start .

@@vijayalakshmisundar2260 I just went and saw mulk some days back (on rishi kapor's demise) usmein BHI the same thing was there..one of the minor characters says to another"maaf Kar paooge mujhe" such endings existed in the ,,70s where minor characters like Poonam dhillon and Sachin in trishul who became estranged for a while get together like ruthe huye lovers in the end.. and one by one every character starts getting. A separate set of ending..something which Sinha can do away with..with Hindi directors it's the norm that ending happy hona chaiyhe or with a perfect closure...

Hilarious that Anubhav called out KJo as the idiot that he is - flagbearer of crass 'cinema', not just nepotism, if we can call it that - who has dumbed down the audience for years and even eroded the reputation of the Filmfare award with his influence!
