Pairs was so satisfying after that dark, dark ladies event. Alexa and Brandon turning up and turning out, the Japanese pair continuing their ascent (and loved Bruno telling them to take in the moment), Ashley and Timothy looking stronger than ever even with the mistakes in the long, and the pairs masterclass given by the top four teams. Bravo!

I agree! This ended up being my favourite event surprisingly. Normally my fave is ice dance and men's. But this pairs event was so well skated and everyone EARNED their spots. The top medalists truly competed. So exciting! I was also so overcome with joy for the Japanese pair. His elation as the program continued was infectious and I was so amazed that even while they were in their emotions, they didn't put a foot wrong.

For me Sui and Han's win was the highlight of the whole Olympics, because I love them so much and also because we needed that joy after everything else that had unfolded. (And I was also happy for the other two pairs on the podium - they all skated so well and I think the placements were correct.)

I was of course glad to see Sui/Han go out on top. But I'm happy for T/M. I've waiting so long to see them finally come through and had almost given up hope. But they are by far the most interesting and elegant of the Russian pairs. I was really glad they finally have their moment. It felt like they had paid the dues and deserved it before their career is done.

Yeah, we learned that the host country can decide the order of the disciplines. I thought it was unique that they had the short and long programs of each discipline only one day apart, instead of having the short program for every discipline first and then starting on the long programs. They opted to put those last for obvious reasons. It's they're pride and joy.

"After watching pairs, I felt that I still love skating." YES YES YES 100% I cried tears of joy for Sui/Han as I've been a long-time follower of their skating. I'm also pleasantly surprised that Tarasova/Morosov were able to skate 2 clean programs for the most part (as Elena said, fans almost expect them not to skate clean). And I love the Japanese pair Miura/Kihara, very happy people and nice solid elements! My favorite coach at the pairs event is Bruno, the way he focused on the positives and told the Japanese to enjoy the moment. And Tamara ofc always professional with her skaters at the KnC. I agree with Jonathan that it felt like Mishina/Galliamov were cautious even at the end of the long program and I thought it might be because of the fluke fall in the team event. All season long, I've thought that their programs didn't match their style; "we are the champions" was a better fit in my opinion.

I agree with Dave about the pairs helping me remember why I love skating. Great to see Nathan win and Jason Brown do so well, but Hanyu stressed me out. The Russian ice dancers were over scored, and the ladies were obviously a mess - so I was feeling done. So nice to have an event that was well performed and fairly scored, and to have moments of real beauty and art.

I'm not used to one redemption arc working out, but to have three in one Olympics? Amazing. So happy for Nathan, P/C and S/H. The Olympics were fantastic if you can ignore the existence of the women's event and Eteri drama. Though the women's event has always been a hot mess so for me it's not that hard to do. Now it's time for the pain of retirement announcements!
@trylogic4084
@trylogic4084 2 жыл бұрын
I'm eager to hear them, too, but we shouldn't get too excited. There are some who have already announced, but there will be people who are planning on never competing again but refuse to come right out and say that they are retiring from competition. I believe Virtue and Moir did that, and I think Weaver/Poje did it, too. They say that if skaters announced their retirement from competition, that some fans won't like it and won't go and see them in shows. I remember seeing a lot of upset regarding Virtue and Moir's final announcement after their second show tour. Lots of people angry and saying that they wouldn't have gone to see them had they known. They had some crazy fans, though, like that huge group of people who really thought that they had a romantic relationship and really wanted them to get married and ride off into the sunset together. The ones I've heard are H/D are retiring, and therefore S/D as well, because Madi and Adrian are going to get married next year and she wants to live by her family in Michigan, so I'm assuming she wouldn't be be thrilled if Adrian wanted to live in Montreal and train for more competing. Olivia said that she won't seek another partner because it takes too long to gel, which is sad because she's only 24. C/B said they will not retire, nor will H/B. I'm pretty sure P/C will retire. The top German pair skaters said they are retiring. I'm pretty sure that Nathan is retiring from competition, because I know he's going back to school in August. He said that, and I can't see him going through the hassle of the long-distance coaching situation again. When he was on social media talking about whether or not he would go to Yale, a lot of people didn't like the idea because it would take him away from Raf, but to quote him, "I can't skate forever". Anything is possible, but I can't see him wanting to be a coach after going to an Ivy League school. Know of any others?
@skaterboy-cz9wj

True to a point. I just felt the media and support was all these skaters but especially in pairs S/H should not have been seen as clear winners. Because of popularity of China's SH they won't get the backlash of Adelina. But if the Russians were more popular and perhaps had one clear team at the top well we might have the public out pour of love for T and M and whining and screaming of unfairness and outrage that Yuna received. Like Yuna and adelina T and M were clean and China did the harder move quad but also made an error like Adelina. But I am not that upset s/h won just as I could say why Yuna lost.

@@skaterboy-cz9wj Sui/Han won rightfully without country bias, unlike Sotnikova, whose many mistakes like edge calls and unwarranted high GOEs went unchecked. Also, Sui/Han were clear contenders for gold in both their Olympic games. They've beaten top competitors before and were able to win in other countries other than their own, winning the respect and love of all those who watch them, even their opponents. Also, Sui/Han know how to make a comeback after injury without the excuse of blaming it on injury. They've achieved the Super Grand Slam as well.

I keep thinking about the contrast between the Russian women and Alyssa Liu, who pre-Olympics was maybe not in the best head space. But at the Games, she seemed DELIGHTED throughout. No expectations, performed well, had fun, mentored by the other skaters. And then the misery of the Eteri camp. Being the favorite is tough. The favorite after a positive doping test and allowed to skate -- unimaginable. But it wasn't just Valieva, it was all three of those young women who were traumatized and clearly abused. I'm glad they ended on the pairs myself. And so glad that Sui and Han took the gold. They skated their hearts out, while the other tops teams seemed much more restrained.

I was so surprised about Alyssa. She was so slow and low this season and then seemed in a weird head space indeed esp after the coaching change. I never bought her “having fun” thing; her constant smiley face felt fake to me and it is my belief at least sometimes it was. At the Olympics though she skated her best and had an ease about it and her smile didn’t seem pasted on. I agree it wasn’t just Valieva, who should never have been pushed to skate known she’d been doped. It put extreme pressure on the whole ladies event. All three Russian girls revealed effects of the abuse they were under in their own different ways and that is still upsetting to me.

I’ve been thinking about this one thing, and I’d like your insights please. In the Teams event, Russia chose to have no substitution at all. They had Valieva skate both short and long. That meant out of the three Eteri girls, only two could possibly get gold medals. Why didn’t Russia let Trusova skate the long in the Teams event. Russia would still likely get gold metal (with an asterisk of course). Trusova would be the first female do to a quad a the Olympics, AND all three girls will have a chance to get a gold. Sounds like a win win win to me. Why didn’t they go with that?

Thanks Dave for being one of the first to expose the Kamila Valieva scandal. I don't think I will be able to watch figure skating again with the same objective or anticipation. Especially after this tragic fiasco that has tainted the field of ladies Olympic figure skating. It was very disturbing to see how this controversy affected all of Eteri's girls. including Olympic champ, Anna Sherbakova. Who was left alone after winning gold with no support from her coach Eteri and her associates. Equally as upsetting was seeing the outburst of Sasha Trusova,. Who ended up with a silver medal while crying hysterically and espousing nothing but disdain against Eteri. Whom it appears, promised Trusova gold if she landed five quads. She was so distraught and even questioned her motivation for continuing on in the field of figure skating. After professing that her team mates all won gold as seniors, except for her. It was truly a sad Olympic event. One of the worst. As we watched Kamila who just a few short months ago was breaking records and defeating nearly every other female competitor. Until we were exposed to yet another Russian doping scandal. This time, connected with her. Her long program was a disaster and a very sad ending to what could have been a promising career in figure skating. No doubt. Eteri will return back to Russia to prepare her next young rising phenoms; Sofia Akateva and Adeliia Petrosian. Who will continue the Eteri cycle of disposable female teen figure skaters. Destined for a short lived career!

I was so happy for Alexa and Brandon to skate so well, definitely their best so far, but they still have more to give. I hope their great result helps motivate them to continue building their partnership at least for another year or two. Their scores are so promising and continue to climb, so why stop when they just started. They’re a very talented and capable pair and I’d love for Alexa to have a chance at national title number 5 especially since they had to sit out this year.

Always love hearing her perspective! Besides the 3s, S/H had the cleanest performed pair elements. T/M and M/G just had these sketchy landings/executions that didn't allow them to really max out on GOEs. Also, besides the 4tw, I feel like S/H nailing their levels made a big difference as well (which they didn't do in 2018, which made just as big of a difference as the sbs mistake). But yeah, even not being a fan of T/M's skating, it just warmed my heart to see them so thrilled to finally hold it together in a big event, especially Evgenia still being so happy despite not being gold. M/G have been commendably steady throughout these big events, especially with the pressure after winning worlds. Hope to see them improve on the ss and see their skating grow. Also LOVED the Japanese. Their ss are *chef's kiss*. If their pcs don't go shooting up soon there is no justice in the world. Also loved the Georgians- hope to see them contend for higher positions and medals soon. My moment of the week was Morozov lifting Han in their hug after the fs. Love all the wholesome pairs content!

@@benbailey159bb yeah probably, or if she landed that triple axel, which was a long shot. no disrespect at all but completely clean 5 quads also isn’t something to expect based on past performance. Was thrilled for her but there wasn’t really a feasible way to win with these skates given her short was if anything overscored and her PCS so so generous for those skates (and compared to others, e.g. wakaba). So I do think there was an issue with expectations not aligning with reality and her coaching team should have helped her with that. But it seemed as long as they sweeped podium they didn’t really care where she placed. So I feel her frustration and feelings of less support and even betrayal found their outlet in that moment.

I found it interesting that despite the salchow, S/H won based on technical content. T/M were the only team in the LP that received any 10's in components, and they got a good number of them. In the end I'm thrilled for the overall results, but I was surprised at S/H's PCS considering they delivered a stunning performance with great emotional impact. Even politically speaking, considering China was putting all of their eggs in 1 basket, it didn't seem like S/H was getting a huge boost (nor the Russians being supressed in any way) - there was a very real chance they were not going to win, and in fact 6/9 judges didn't put them in 1st. Tarasova and Morozov definitely have the best element quality in RUS. Hopefully Knierim and Frazier will continue, they are just starting to hit their stride. They looked a lot more comfortable with their elements here and did some of their best twist and throws ever. I'd like them to try a different element order for next year, among other things. The goal should be to skate well multiple times, not just once and quit. You have to work your way up in pairs. I'm hoping they will set some goals at the end of the season, try to win a GP, give themselves more chances at Worlds. They are already doing so well! Nothing can hold them back except themselves.

P.S. Even a good critical/tough coach knows the moment a skater needs a hug. I had the worst skate once & after my music ended, my stomach fell, as I knew my tough coach was going to "kill" me (11 year old brain). Instead, as I got off the ice, she embraced me in a big bear hug. Such relief! THEN a few minutes later, she asked me what the heck happened as I'd been doung so well (she was sill tough, lol). Even my mom said, "I can't believe Susie hugged you"! 🤣 Susie, who 99% of the time would critique me, wasn't a hugger, knew at this tiny competition in L.A., what I needed was a hug. Anyone with a heart would've given Kamila a big hug, said it would be okay, THEN maybe give some corrections - because they're still Russian. 😁

Liked Smart and Diaz in the Gala. Bonus points for not doing a ballad like the other ice dance teams. The Gala was done well I too wonder why the picked some skaters like the Italian pairs who didn't make the top 10. They knew their Gala program so that's why they were picked. Like the lighting effects on the ice during performances. Also the skaters harassing that poor dude in the panda costume.

I am happy for Nathan and Jason because they skated amazing. Sinnerman is a masterpiece. In addition, Jason finished in the top six; he totally belonged at the Olympics. I am glad some people are eating crow now. I am glad that Hubbell and Donahue got a bronze medal and I am happy for Kaori getting the bronze. I am so hsppy for P and C getting gold . I don't think that we will see Kamila again and I am annoyed that Sasha had a meltdown for winning a silver medal. I wonder if Mariah and Karen will retire after this season. Thanks for the great Olympic videos.

I agree with everything you wrote except the part about Trusova. At first it looked to me like a temper tantrum meltdown, but after studying it and learned what she was saying, I have pity for her. She felt betrayed by her coach. I think she was told if she landed all five quads she would get the gold and that had been motivating her. Remember she has a recent injury. I'm guessing she did a lot of painful practice to get to this point and thought she finally had her chance

@@pajamamama5965 Yes, she was told to do 5 quads and 3A in short. If she made 2A and didn't fall she was one to win. But her problem she is manipulated by this woman since two years already. They let her to go to Pluschenko when she already almost couldn't jump anymore at 15. He rebuilt her physically and in technique. Than her parents were told to come back with promise that otherwise she won't be able to qualify for Olympics. They didn't let her to train in Plusch school because she could beat everyone otherwise. That it, crying Sasha it not a normal being. Doping is rather light thing from all children abuse going on there.

@@redutlegalized9586 a bunch of lies and wishful thinking! The Tut team and BTW, tried to convince Sasha not to do 3 As in competitions, as somehow she just cannot do it. But she refused and would not listen to anybody. Actually, one very good Russian FS commentator on UTB Zloy Snegovik, or Angry Snowman, assessed about 5 years ago, that neither Sasha nor Anya could in fact do clean or consistently 3As, because of their built-it’s much easier for them to do Quads.

What happened at end of the ladies event is why we don’t need children in the Olympics anymore. They just don’t have the maturity to handle it. Plus, these kids clearly have trauma and should not be here under the bright lights and pressure of the Olympics.

Great to see Elena. There was no denying the Chinese. Yes, they were at home. But had the competition been held on Mars, they still would have one. They came to say: “You shall not pass. Not on my watch.” Their choreography was extremely nuanced. I literally can’t stop thinking about them. I think the Russians have a problem on their hands. Out of the last 4 Olympics, the Chinese have won Gold at TWO! And if there’s anything we know about the Chinese, they don’t let up. Look forward to the next few years.
