I had just moved to Chicago, and played the tape constantly often while I ran through my suburb. It had such an impact on me. I was 35 and am now 73, but it still sounds so current to this day. I had a tape. I heard that The Way it Is yesterday and had to send away for the CD through Amazon. Can't wait to get!

I'm so glad to hear he has a special fondness for Red Plains - that's my favorite song on the album!

Wowwwww! Thata awesome. When I bought the album a few years ago, "Red Plains " became my favorite and still is. Therefore, to learn that it's Bruce's favorite song sheds a new light on the song.

Bruce is sincere. What more do you ask for? Oh, talent. That too. So Bruce has that. He also seems to hang out with great musicians. Now what. Sit at the foot of the master and listen.

When I saw Bruce Hornsby first back in the days in Wuerzburg/Germany, accompanying Huey Lewis and the News, instantly become a fan of him. He formed my eclectical American soundtrack, and I am happy he roamed around in different music styles. Great music. Great Interview. Hoping for an european tour.

I was lucky enough to be a grade ahead of both Bruce and Chip DeMatteo. I knew him and his two brothers, Jon and 'Bubbles'. Back then he was an aspiring basketball player for HRA along with the headmaster's son Lindsay Trim. Back then Bruce's nickname was 'Jake' if I remember correctly. He and Lindsay witnessed me take down Larry Luck on the basketball court rooting all the way. Good memories of a vintage time.

Great interview and interviewer. First time I've heard this much back story. Being a Brit, I'm proud of the Elton John influence, but artistically, I think you've gone streets ahead. I once played "river runs low tonight" from a cassette, on an international phone call (early 90s) to a crush I had at the time - I cringe when I think about it now - but there have been so many more songs that won't leave my head since then. I'm not into all the work - and don't expect to be - but the songs that stand out seem a cut above any other contemporary music I've heard. The lyrics? truly whacky, thought provoking, melancholy, and amazingly funny. "Walk outside your house you could be a sitting duck; Man serves you with papers and says real nice good luck"

Definitely one of the all-timers. As a long time Virginian, got to see him here several times, including a charity benefit where it was just him on the piano the whole time...I've only ever said or felt this about one other performance I've ever seen when I say he blew the doors off of the place. (Side note...is he in the hospital or something here? It looks like he's wearing one of those gowns...yikes)

Who was the guy in the Mandolin Rain video.. that is not in the band.. and he is only shown for just a few seconds at 4:03?

It's definitely his younger brother John Hornsby at 4:03. John co-wrote most of the songs on "The Way It Is" and "Scenes From The Southside," albums, primaŕly on the lyrical side. In one of the sheet music books for those albums there's a nice interview with John featuring a crisp black-and-white photo. Earlier I was under the impression that John is an attorney like their father, but recently I read he's actually an engineer. His lyrics do so much to paint the pictures of Tidewater Virginia that Bruce wanted.

“The Way It Is” - I had it on repeat! I remember where I was the first time I heard it. I still love listening to it; As Bruce has expanded in his piano style, he adds even more to his interpretation. Here is what I recently posted: Bruce Hornsby, so under-rated, humble, and brilliant on the Steinway playing his big # One hit on the Billboard in 1987. "Ah, but don't you believe them" kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYDIfJyapZKcjdEfeature=shared

IMO Bruce saved Grateful Dead. Brent Mydland died. GD had 6 nights at MSG then a tour through Europe 2 months later. Big $$ on the line & Bruce seamlessly sat in and pushed the band creativity and added some real juice to setlists and breakouts of songs forgotten. As a deadhead I was so jazzed he joined being a fan of his since 85. 🫶Bruce
