That logic crumbles when you realise the only reason they're called ravenclaw is because the founders surname was ravenclaw. The name of the house doesn't need to relate to the emblem they use. An example being that gryffindor has a lion which is similar but not the same thing and hufflepuff has a badger for some reason. Each of the animals chosen were chosen for the characteristics the founder wished his house would display. Alternative explanation raven can also mean the color as in a glossy black and looking at the emblem the eagle does have a black claw. P.S. not entirely sure why I felt like explaining all that but there you go

1000 years ago people did not generally have surnames. So it's plausible that Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin are descriptions of their character chosen either by themselves or by 10th-century witcharding society.

This is funny, though I always thought Hufflepuff tends to get underestimated. Their thing is specifically: "loyalty, fairness and diligence", which are actually pretty noble traits, and as far as hero material goes they'd be second only to Gryffindor. Plus, they'd have the strongest sense of camaraderie out of all the houses, so it's likely the best place to go if you want to make lots of friends. Helga's motto was pretty much: "I don't care about talent, hard work is what matters."

Hufflepuff is the best house though They're next to the kitchens on the level floors of thr basement so they students can go next door for free snacks anytime (the elves are happy to give visitors food) Ravenclaw and Gryffindor are up in towers which gets loud and cold during storms. While Slytherin is deep down in the dungeons, so deep their windoes are an underwtaer view of the lake, it gets wet and cold there. Hufflepuff in the basement is cozy and is designed to look like a hobbit house with round doors and windows, filled with plants and reachable by sunlight. I read that ONLY the Hufflepuff dormitories have remained free of break ins from other houses since the school founding, while the rest gets lots of stowaways and break ins from outsiders. The teachers are chill and the students don't get extra pressure to perform exceptionally well, just as long as they're comfortable. Bo wonder the Hufflepuffs were so mad at Harry for stealing Cedric's spotlight as the school Champion.

@downcasted Hermione being top of class is because Gryffindors and Ravenclaws are never put in the same classroom until later in the series when lessons don't matter that much anymore. And if they are in the same room as her they are silenced by JK's pen. Furthermore, if this wouldn't have been the case, Hermione's wit would have been obsoleted by the Ravenclaws in the very first book because to hold their reputation high, the Ravies should ask so many questions that Hermy isn't heard anymore.

I remember reading once that Originally, the main characters would have been from different houses - Nevile, I believe would have been in Hufflepuff. In addition, each book would have featured a trip to each of the common rooms (Hence, Gryfindor in book 1, Slytherin in 2, Ravenclaw somewhere down the line, and Hufflepuff. That trend never developed.

Instead, interestingly, the three main protagonists ended up in Gryffindor, but each displaying characteristics of the other houses as facets *of* their courage-Slytherin for Harry's ability to delve into the heart of evil, Ravenclaw for Hermione's ability to think strategically under pressure, and Hufflepuff for Ron's ability to remain loyal in the face of his worst fears and jealousies. Pretty cool.
