Gotta love how Kelly likes to tells us how we need to save the planet. While he has been consistently been flying around the world thousands of times in his lifetime just to surf. Going through thousands of surfboards and wetsuits that most will have eventually ended up in landfill. Then they buid one of his waves in one of driest cities in the world. But it's all ok because his tailpads are recyclable! 👍🏼

pretty harsh accusation as it is his job... And the greatest of all time who is literally paid to surf the best waves in the world, and that requires obscene amounts of travel. It is not like theres an electric airline that can help lessin your carbon footprint. But recyclable tail pads and more environmentally friendly equipment is a step towards being environmentally conscious. As opposed to opting for the more toxic options out there. Jealousy is a foul cologne, might want to invest in some deodorant.
@jimbokiwi9322

@@gwarrior4242 there are other pro surfers out there that were travelling around the world for surf. But were also concerned about the environment but felt like they shouldn't be preaching about if while they are flying constantly everywhere just to surf waves that they have at home. Big wave surfer Fergal Smith felt strongly about his carbon footprint so he quickly stopped travelling abroad to surf and only surfs at home. Just because Kelly is the greatest surfer of all time and will probably have to largest carbon footprint of any pro sports person in history doesn't make it ok and he definitely shouldn't be preaching about it. Maybe if you got Kelly's dick out your mouth you'd see! 👍🏼

Gotta love how people who never do anything to help anyone sit around and arm chair criticize others. So because he wastes things, that means he's not allowed to try to make a difference where he can? He's not allowed to have an opinion on the environment and to voice it? Give your head a shake. You have NO ability to think logically or critically. You think you do, but you don't.

@@buzz5969 I agree that life without travel is like reading only one page of an atlas, it is just a shame that the world can no longer tolerate the extensive pollution of jet travel. However, your comment is about the exception to the rules, which are tolerated because of the need for even oppressive dictators to interface and derive income from the outside world. Even totalitarian places have crime, if that is your point. Just don't ever leave the protection granted by economic necessities. When I was in the Saudi kingdom, the English embassy was trying to negotiate downward the sentience of fifty lashes for a British woman who hosted a party at her residence inside the workers compound where alcohol was served and someone fell off the upstairs balcony. It was the subject of much conversation because fifty lashes would kill a woman of her age.

When I lived in Dubai back in 2008 it was common to see girls with tiny bikinis all over the local beaches and at the waterparks, dressed pretty normally when at malls etc too, UAE is different to Saudi, they rely on tourism and a foreign workforce to keep things running as they know their oil wealth is finite, and have adjusted their laws accordingly.

I was always very aware of my privilege over the regular citizens of despotic countries because I was a part of the economic machine that fueled the economies of the privileged.and as such would have no trouble with local customs, from knowledge of what happened to the more lawless types of other Americans in the sailor trade. such men might see jail, but the consulate would have them out the next day, just as if they were rich. .

I can't see any use for this thing except as a tour stop for sports washing an area oppressive to human rights. Because humans are not built to tolerate that type of heat and sun without fully protective garments, like they traditionally wear in such areas. it certainly has no local income to support operations . So it is either a simple vanity of the rich, or just more sport washing in an effort to normalize those who choose to oppress their fellow human beings.

Love how it pipes one way and slabs in reverse. Pretty slick design! Pretty boring as a spectator but I’m sure it’s a dream to ride. I fantasize about adding air sections to the wave by securing artificial reef obsticles to the floor of the basin. Underwater obsticles, temporarily configured to create a "slopestyle" or "street league" wave. Or at least a jumping off point so people can catch the end of the wave when the barrel eats the surfer. When are people going to be able to stand on the "sandbar" and watch surfing while kids are tubing around in that Lazy River in the foreground? So much arena needs to built around this basin. Really enjoyed the music.

Longer too, not that they really needed to lengthen it 🥵haha Thanks dude yeah it’s already a lot of pressure being there on opening day (and wasn’t a guarantee that i was gonna surf 🥶) ended up being allowed to surf 2 full waves, and 2 half waves. Definitely just wanted to make each one count ! On slaters boards was 🤯 would love to go back and have a crack on more waves own boards 💯

I remember hearing lots of critic about the surf ranch in California because the amount of water used to keep the pool working, specially located in the middle of farm land, in a state that has longer and longer drought years, built far from water sources. I don't know where this new wave pool is located in relation to water (I looked at google maps and it seems not to far from water), and how they have addressed the environmental impact of the facilities regarding water, renewable energy, and the environment. I do think it would be cool to be able to learn to surf in a pool since it's a more controlled environment, but just because it can be build does not mean it should be built. Hopefully kids and individual with low income have the chance to have access to such facilities and the employees building the facility and the ones running it they all receive living wages. Thank you for your posts they are cool and inspiring.

Is the bottom topography changeable? I like the potential in lemure better, because of the variety in the bottom topography, the variety of the wave, and the potential for a wider variety of maneuvers that are possible for each individual surfer, this leading to a wider array of surfing performances possible and a more exciting show. So far this Abu Dhabi wave seems more like it's forcing everyone to be a one trick pony.

@@sotbinki9433 you might choose to think a bit deeper before calling names. Abu Dhabi functions as a buffer to isolate the kingdom of Saud from "western infidels" . the two locations are very linked , in ways not shown on the map. when I was there, women dressed covered from head to toe, with a more transparent cloth rectangle over the eyes so they could see out. when I went out walking, a flock of women from a compound giggled and hid behind bushes to shadow me as I walked, they were so curious about the outside world. In arabia, I couldn't leave my fenced in area to even go walking.

I'll reserve final judgement until I see some evidence that workers were exploited building this thing. I would hope the WSL (cause they own it now) insisted on fair treatment. @@doublestrokeroll Thank you for the reply, I never said anything regarding this particular build. The UAE in general isn't reflective of surf culture and what we as surfers are, but I can't speak for all surfers. I've been to the UAE, I live in a surf town in Australia where Ripcurl and Quicksilver were born. I'm just saying, the UAE isn't reflect of this respectful nature for the oceans, and the culture we have. How they built it, and who they screwed to do it, is for someone else to investigate. kelly and steph honestly, being the goats of the sport shouldn't be backing this with their names. @@LekkerDops Torquay? Beautiful country down there. I've spent a bit of time along that coast. Stayed in Ocean Grove. I think that image of surfers is long dead. Judging by youtube comments most surfers now are a bunch of alt right anti pc backlash sexist racist homophobic morons. This generation gave up the "one with nature" thing a long time ago, unfortunately. I know, the surfing community is made up of more than white guys aged 10 to 35, but unfortunately that's still the sweet spot for the industry and the one all the marketing is directed at. They are still the main demographic. You could look at it another way. Hopefully surfing will cause many people there to discover the culture and dig in a bit. Maybe it will help open a few eyes to some of the damage being caused. It's not like this place isn't going to open so at this point might as well hope for the best.
