Hi... and a BIG "thank you" for the video. I especially love the photo of my grandfather (John Antonik) and his merry-go-round at 1:05-:06. The video has me and my siblings corresponding and trying to figure out the date the photo was taken. The comments below are from my older sister Kitty. I believe the photo was taken in 1957 and that the little girl in the center is indeed our younger sister Mary. Mary also thinks it is a photo of her. It was taken in Belleville, NJ most likely in front of my grandparents house at 133 Ralph Street. I also remember many of the other places pictured in the video. I left NJ 21 years ago and now live in Wyoming. Thanks for the memories. (Irene Antonik Ward)

Wow. I'm 66 and grew up in Glen Rock and Upper Saddle River. Seeing Two Guys,Packards (Italian ices were sold right next to the entrance to the liquor dept.) and Bertrands Island really brought back great memories of all the things that made NJ unique. There was racism, poverty, pollution and corruption aplenty . I know that growing up in a white, middle class suburb shielded me from alot of the bad stuff but it was still a great time and place to be a kid. It was a simpler time (for better or worse) when kids were allowed to be kids and the grown-ups lived in there own world. I live in Maine now but a bit of my heart remains in New Jersey. Thank you for posting this video.

Love this!! One of my favorite memories is the sound the little locker doors made on the Good Humor truck - and the man would have to go to different lockers for different items. That sound, along with the date stamper at the library with its double "kluck-kluck" and the wonderful smell of wood at the old library on Washington Ave in Bergenfield, are good memories. And how all the clothes sold at Two Guys smelled like sauerkraut... I don't know how, but one guy selling hot dogs out front managed to get the smell into everything inside the store! My dad loved Casa Hofbrau, so it wasn't our fault it went out of business - the only place you could get red cabbage. Lots of great memories! Thanks!

Thanks for the memories - 1st one shown being Bertrand's Island at Lk Hopatcong! But best 1 is at 1:07 my grandfather, John Antonik & his wonderful merry-go-round w/ metal peg music box that played different songs depending on its position. Father & uncle drove it in the 30s after their high school class days, charging a few cents for a ride. My younger brothers & sisters & I loved to visit Dziadzi ("grandfather" in Polish) & get him to back the merry-go -round out of the old garage that housed it & operate it in the driveway. It wasn't unusual for a few neighborhood kids to come over. I was mostly too old to ride but just loved that music box everytime. Thanks to my brother, Walt for forwarding this link!

+Paul Czekaj Thank you very much for including this photo. Do you recall how you came to have it? It was taken in the Belleville area where my grandparents lived (next to a large drycleaning company near the Passaic river - house & yard is now a parking lot :( ), though Dziadzi would take the merry-go-round to nearby towns too. My youngest sister & I are pretty certain that the young girl in the center front is her; she'd be about 5yo & time about 1956. Although we've seen the photo before in the family we're not absolutely certain of its exact location, date or who took it. I checked out your oldest vid - NJ as your home & liked your composition. Look forward to your new one. BTW I like pumping my own gas here in Arizona & everywhere else we've traveled; I don't miss the restriction by law in NJ of doing so.

+Paul Czekaj Just got an email from my youngest brother who's answered the question of how you likely got the photo. Chris sent the "pics to a nostalgia reporter for the Star Ledger several years back in an effort to try to locate the truck." He added that young girl is not likely our sister after a round of deducing w/ man who'd been a youngster living behind my grandparents (who contacted him after article ran) he is in the photo & is same age as my brother, 4 yrs younger than my sister. The pic was probably taken in early 60s making our sister too old to be the dark haired little girl in center.

+Kitty Antonik Wakfer All the kids on my block including me were so thrilled when your grandfather came down our street and we got to give him $.10c to have a ride. We didn't have the money back then to go to a real amusement park. We also would wait to hear "Tops All" ice cream man that came around 7:00 PM. We run out of our house with .25c in our hand to get out favorite ice cream. Oh those were the days. Please look for my new song and video coming out soon. It's called "A PLACE CALLED HOME". My grandparents lived in northern NJ, not far from Route 22, in the New Providence-Westfield-Mountainside area. I loved visiting them, enjoyed watching all the NYC children's programs, I remember Two Guys, Robert Hall & Korvette's (hadn't thought about them in years until I saw this video). I have such happy memories of that area. I remember my grandparents loved a local restaurant, Chu Dynasty, they'd pick up a meal when we visited, also a place called Fairyland (I think), everything was on Route 22, my grandma shopped at Acme Market, I remember something called Echo Plaza and the Flying A gas station. I'm sure there must have been a HoJo's around somewhere--loved their ice cream & fried clams! I was only like 5 or 6 at the time. There was also a local soda shop (not sure it was exactly that but it was a place where teens hung out) called Snuffy's, this was in the early 60s, I'm surprised I can still recall so much.

Oh my gosh. Audubon NJ and a photo of the Audubon shopping center. Somehow it's nice to know it hasn't been completely forgotten. I spent many hours there growing up. Sometimes we'd drive there, sometimes we'd walk. It was close enough to do so. Woolworth's had great hot soft pretzels and water ice at the walk up window as well as an indoor restaurant. +Paul Czekaj Sound like you were from the Plainfield area - Grunnings - nobody knows that unless they were from that area. And John's Bargain Store, JJ Newberry's and McCrory's on Front Street, and Robert Hall on 22. I went to the Capitol Theater in Passaic and Art Stock's Royal Manor. I could go on and on - the Neptune Diner, old Asbury Park shots, and the ride in Seaside that was lost in Sandy. I can't believe that you found all of this!!! This is something that I will watch over and over. THANKS

Yeh, I was born in Jersey alright. Just before WWII. Some childhood memories: Loved Sea Bright, Long Branch, the Riviera Hotel, Jimmy Buff’s, Palisades Park, Olympic Park, Wildwood, The Piney Woods, Amboys Drive-In, Bambergers. Watched the Parkway being built, played in the underpass pits when they were filled with water. Worked at Charms Candy Factory and ushered at The Maplewood Theater. My R&R garage band played at local high schools and pool parties. Went to Seton Hall, my first car was a souped-up ‘55 Ford Crown Vic which I raced east and west on Rte 22 around the diners, The Garden of Eatin’ and the big ship that became a men’s clothing store, ate Tip-Top bread where my uncle worked, Hoffman Soda, Ballantine Ale, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Branchbrook Park, Uncle Floyd Vevino, WNJR and Pat The Cat (“Oo-papa-do, and ahow do you do?”) the CNJ Station on Broad Street. The new Newark Airport. Delaware Water Gap. The Falls at Little Falls. The Tivoli. Howard Johnson’s 48 flavors Ice Cream Parlor at the top of the hill in South Orange. Lionel Train factory in Hillside, The oil tank explosions down in Bayway. The first Safeways and Shop-Rites and R&S Auto, Conca D’Oro Italian bakery specialties, St Antoninus Church, The Star Pizzeria, The Reservoir Club, the parades on 14th Avenue, Snake Hill on the NJTurnpike, the 17-year cicada infestation! And so much more I can’t remember anymore. I moved out west in the 1980s. But Sinatra Land will always be in my heart

Yes, I do, my mother worked for Two Guys in Kearny, NJ. Two Guys got deliveries via Train. Train tracks were in back of the store. Those tracks fell into the river. And part of the old Two Guys building did too. Anyone recall what the Two Guys from Harrison wanted to originally wanted to name their new store? Remember they worked in the RCA factory in Harrison (4th street now Frank E. Rogers Blvd) RCA would discount scratched and slightly lightly damaged merch. First to the employees. Then if they can't sell it to them then it to the public.

It was wonderful watching all the great photos and music of "Old New Jersey". I felt as if I was reliving my childhood. However, I noticed something odd and "out of place" and was wondering if anyone else noticed the same? While the film depicts the many fabulous old photos of New Jersey, inserted at the 1:16 point is a brief video of pre-pubescent children in bathing suits, getting ice cream. It seemed completely out of place. Not only was it an actual video rather than still photos, but it appeared to have taken place in modern times( observe what seems to be a cellphone and more modern apparel.) Also, this is not an ice cream truck from the 60s. I have no clue why this video was inserted as a part what was otherwise, a wonderful trip down memory lane. It just struck me as being somewhat unusual.

The "modern" video of kids buying ice cream fits if you would actually listen to the song. I don't think there is much in the way of photos of kids buying ice cream from a Good Humor truck in the 60's. It is not a preverted video as some would like to infer. It is kids buying ice cream ffs. Now if that commenter NEEDS it to be perverted to satisfy some NEED they have as an individual, then have at it. Other than that, forget about it!
