Plus, why does Jay's kids and husband have to wear fat suits? I don't know how they could around the criticism because if they hired look-alike actors, it would probably be worse since they are mocking the actual fat actors. I don't know. I don't like them wearing fat suits, but the having look-alike fat actors, that would just be making fat people into a spectacle. How would you handle it? Is there any way to deal with fatphobia in a show without making fat people into spectacles?

I think they harped on Jays weight in that era because they were trying to appeal to the white audience as well, and we all know how the 2000s white population was very obsessed with being stick thin. I had no clue, but My Wife and Kids was aired all over the world. I had an ex who was a white man, and he said he used to watch the show when he lived in Greece as a kid. Knowing the audience provides more clarity to their topics and how they handled them. I think the line of harmless fun gets crossed when you look at the larger message overall tied to the discourse. When the entire message is "being fat is bad and fat people need to get in the gym" rather than "society views being fat as bad and here is how it effects the people who are constantly the butt of the joke." They could have still made all those jokes in the episode, but if they ended it with Michael understanding how awful his jokes made Jay feel, the episode still would have been in good taste. The reason it was in poor taste is because they drove the message all the way through that "fat is bad" by having Jay have that nightmare and deciding to lose the weight.

So he forced them to eat pie for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for DAYS. Literally nothing else. And Jay let it happen. Like? These kids were having damn near breakdowns bc of only being allowed to eat pie. Thats so childish and it made me realize just how much of an asshole he was, especially when it came to the kids

@@pastelpurpledeathbed Yeah, like public seating such as on buses and planes, more clothing options, certain medical beds and other equipment that isn't made for 300+ pounds of weight, and most of all, doctors and surgeons just not knowing how to work with fat people and blaming their weight on 100% of whatever symptoms they have.

We've become a lot more desensitized to seeing fat people in the modern age that our perceptions are a bit skewed. This is fat. Its not egregious, but it is fat. Its probably just on the cusp of where it starts to cause negative health outcomes, perticularly for black and hispanic people (and especially for east Asian populations) as they are not as fat-adapted as white people. Fat starts about here, not once people get so obese they start making new bodyparts to name (looking at the "apron" girlies)

It was shows like American Top model’s and beauty magazines that had impact on more of the toxic body traits. Sitcoms were just there to be funny, and that stuff with Jay was tame. Do I like Martin? Yes, I grew up with it...I have the entire series on DVD...and I rewatch reruns on T.V. if I happen to be up late or watch it on Netflix/BET+. HOWEVER, I'm NOT going to act like A LOT of the things in that show don't hit different since I'm an adult now. Yes, there were some lines crossed for the sake of 'comedy.' I think when you get older, you notice the difference between jokes for the sake of comedy vs. jokes that are just mean-spirited. Pam was anything BUT ugly! Not putting Gina down or anything, but my gosh PAM was the it girl in that series IMO. I'm a 90s kid and I remember the wave of people in real life and when social media started up who cheered for a Martin/Gina-like relationship. Trust and believe the LAST relationship that I'd ever want to imitate would be those two! Michael & Jay weren't perfect, but I will say I'd much rather have a relationship closer to that than Martin and Gina...

Bald people don’t get less medical care for being bald, they don’t get told “well just grow some hair” if the issue isn’t immediately obvious.
