The fact that Oscar found Penny “grown enough” to take literal toddlers to a theme park and babysit them but not “grown enough” to date. It’s an issue many black girls face, which is being adultified in ways that are beneficial to those around them but being seen as immature in other ways.

the mean-spirited nature of that episode struck me to the core, ngl. like, c'mon now, miss boulevardez, we gotta be better than this, you gain nothing being so NASTY 😭 i definitely feel like a part of this episode was the writers trying to execute on fatphobia and how it was positively perceived in the comedy space at the time. i feel like they were really punching down with the punchlines and rebuttals, too much for a lesson to truly encompass them. however, there is a stark contrast between those harsh words and the ending of the episode, where penny learned and grew as a result of her experience with carlos. she figured out how she wanted to approach partnership via her values and what she finds important in the person she chooses to experience life with. she didn't want to sop up the evil, dark nature that exudes from individuals like lacienega (i know she's still young LMAO but that was BAD energy) and plenty of others in the world we live in... the light inside of her shielded her from that way of thinking, at least in the long-term. that is a great thing to put in front of the kids! and tbh, if imma really keep it real... us big dudes really not that bad, not in any regard 🤷🏽♂😁 they was just hating with them jokes! great video babe

Writers thinking that protrying someone as the opposite of their stereotype is progressive is so real! I was having a conversation online with someone where they said they wished a child Muslim character didn’t wear hijab so Muslims could be “normalized”. I also find that similar with how disabled people are represented and how the moral of many disabled stories are related to making the character “useful” to the able bodied characters in another way or they’re secrets geniuses. Is it a stereotype that disabled people can’t do things and that Muslims are always covered up? Yes. But there are disabled people who will struggle with certain tasks and need accommodations and Muslims who do fit that stereotype, and we need to accept them or were just creating a new stereotype. In the thread a lot of people started mentioning a child wearing a hijab is “not realistic or incorrect” because of past media they’re seen. So it’s interesting how new stereotypes can be made when we flip the script so many times people take it as fact.

Society still hasn't changed. People think it's okay to make someone over weight feel bad and constantly pick at them. It's not the least bit productive. Studies literally show how harmful negative reinforcement is. If you claim to care about someone's health you should also care about their mental health. Bullying them doesn't solve anything. I never understood why people feel the need to treat overweight people so poorly, OTHER than just pure hatred for their existence. And that's something they need to go fix about themselves.

It ain't easy for father (or mother/guardian) to see their daughter begin to mature into a young woman, but it's no excuse to deny her an explanation on why certain things make you uncomfortable. It's unfair to her as an individual, it expresses a lack of trust, and it will lead to her distancing herself from their father (or mother/guardian) as she gets older. If a woman can't confide in the person who raised them, where will they?

Your explanations are so good to hear because its rare for me to hear someone have such an understanding and care about things such as this topic. Some of the comments under this post say they don’t believe in fat phobia or that fat shaming isn’t real and etc are part of the definition that you read in the video and don’t realize it. Because weight/size can be genetic and not everyone’s metabolism is the same speed. And ive seen so many skinny out of shape people in my own life, im not morbidly obese or whatever but im counted as plus sized and im in pretty good shape. Everyone associates fatness with the automatic idea that the person over eats, is a couch potato, and doesn’t take care of themselves entirely when that is not the case. A lot of us are healthy eaters or are in control over our weight to an extent. People that say to just exercise so that people won’t feel that way about the overweight person are ignorant to the fact that not everyone desires skinniness in the first place and doesn’t know that person’s medical history.

There was one more girl I like but she never looked at me that way at 11 years old. But when I got to high school literally began liking big girls and one of them was a twin. She never gave me a chance from 10th to 12th grade though it was other men who believe I was very acceptable but she told them I wasn’t out there enough. Nowadays she’s a single mother 🤷🏾♂️. But sometimes I look back when I was 8 to 11 years old during elementary. There was a big girl in my class in the 6th grade and she was beautiful. She wasn’t conceited at all or nothing and always seem like she was in a happy mood. I remember years ago coming across her social page and it look like she be singing. I hope she’s doing well in life, but when we was kids idk why but I did had a feeling she might’ve been looking at my direction or someone told me. I just didn’t pay attention, but when you’re in elementary school you never know if a relationship could last that from then to maybe 10 years down the line. Believe me I’ve seen couples break away after high school 🤷🏾♂️.

The problem begins when getting care, your problems are directly linked to being overweight. It’s a bias. People’s biases don’t allow them to look past their size as being the problem and that can be harmful. Also people can be genetically fat. Again, it’s seen as a moral failing when in some cases it’s just the body they’re born with. So from that point, is the solution to work everyday to go against your own body to just be slim? And being healthy and body image shouldn’t be in the same conversation. Because it just circles back to the goal just being skinny because people fear being fat

@alissajadyn but if their obesity is genetic, that is a disease, a genetic disease so they by definition are not healthy, thus doctors are going to bring it up... Thats not a bias... Thats just common sense, no?

@alissajadyn being OW is a problem though , not BIG or Large but being OW means your bofy weight is over capacity. I do think lots of situations most people onlt care about the beauty standard as opposed to physical health but that doesnt mean being OW is ok. Just you shouldnt look down or form blind opinions on someone appearances (granted most people do anyways)

It's honestly not surprising that they didn't call LaCienega out on her crap because most episodes (in my recollection) they didn't. I certainly watched The Proud Family (because I watched most Disney Channel shows back in the day) but I could never say I truly liked it because all of Penny's "friends" were so freaking nasty all the time. Even with Zoey being "the nice one" she would be happy to screw over Penny and go along with LaCienega and Dijonay's BS if it suited her better. Penny certainly wasn't perfect but it felt a lot less above and beyond mean.

@alissajadyn Fat shaming is inappropriate (Malapropos) but.......accepted in the media, by kids, by adults, and, ironically, by other overweight people!

Real shame Carlos didn't show up again. And his name seems to imply that he's Afro-Latino? Did Proud Family have any other Afro-Latinos?
