I always liked the pirates that were able to use trickery to become rich. Howell Davis was an intelligent Captain known for his use of deception. Whilst he was surrounded by violent brutes, he himself was kind-hearted, and even made friends amongst his enemy. His life is full of adventures and battles, and his untimely death would have powerful consequences on the entire Golden Age.

Yes, I know AGH isn't reliable. I use it as a substitute when no other sources are available in order to form a more cohesive narrative, since KZbin videos are primarily for entertainment and easily-consumed history. As you'll notice in the video, I counter some statements from AGH whenever contrary accounts are available.

Monkey Island music makes the whole story even sillier (despite the horrific shit that happened). By the end I imagined the whole gang of Davis, La Buse and Cocklyn as some kind of cartoon characters lol

Commenting here for the first time to help the algorithm, but I also want to say I love your videos! Educational and complete, you don't gloss over important details. It's also nice that you provide actual sources for us to read (I'm quite a bookworm myself). Been a fan since your video about pirate food, too!

This was a great look at Davis with interesting info. Btw "Sailing East: West-Indian Pirates in Madagascar" by Baylus C. Brooks has some additional details of Davis and other pirates who operated in the African coast including another pirate flag description for Davis to add to these. Can recommend. Cheers!🏴‍☠️

I think this is the first time i remember hearing an actual amount of gunpowder on a pirate ship. 18 tons!? Way more than I expected, there must be several accounts of disasters and other calamities related to gunpowder on ships.

People weren't stupid in those times. In Spanish, the power room was called 'Santa Barbara' and probably treated as such. Remember that Bartholomew Roberts enforced very strict rules aboard his ship. No drinking, no gambling, no fighting and lights out at eight.

Good video. General history of pirates is indeed good source in those cases when nothing better is available. Nath. Mist, who was the most likely writer (see Bialuschewski' and Woodard for example), was well informed overall as a newspaperman. However he had his considerable licence with facts in the book. His accounts of Blackbeard and the women pirates may be the most inaccurate parts of his work, he wanted it to sell well so he did this by adding clear elements of fiction. Some of his accounts should be, or at least may be, much more reliable, possibly, for example, his account on Roberts and Davis. There are things in his work that prove his diligent research into the topic when comparing to period documents. However, Mist was a committed Jacobite and as such his works can even include political messages to distorts facts between the lines. And often General history's stories are just copied as "pirate facts" on popular works, which is wrong: one should also see proper primary sources first before trusting GHOP and also always acknowledge that the possible "fact" is from Charles Johnson (Mist)

i subscribe to the theory that AGH was collectively written by a number of writers, including mist who probably published it

I am reading William Dampiers, A New voyage Round the World. It is always staggering to listen to the lives of people like Davis. It gives cause for self reflection in asking ones self "what the hell have YOU done?" Which is why I hope to sail with the Pillager. Thanks for another well researched and presented video.

@@GoldandGunpowder Thank you for the recommendation! I've been meaning to pick your brain about Dampier, but I don't want to distract you from making excellent content. Dampier writes like a true Chronicler, leaving all embellishments out, and writing things down as accurately as he could figure.

most of south-western Great Britain was overrepresented in the maritime community(which is partly why the Cornish/West Country "arr" accent is so associated with pirates), maybe due to easy access to the Atlantic, and partially due to Bristol being Britain's second most important maritime hub in the period, cause and effect of the previous point. this might've been a reason

I hate that most of the pirate history books I've read when was a kid summarized Davis's career into a single paragraph. The only time they mention him is when it's about the "great" pirate Roberts.

Hi, im not sure if the General History Of Pirates book is unreliable, because in a documentery I watched about pirates the historians and experts say that it is authentic and reliable, unless i misinterpreted it, although, granted it did come out in 2015, but im still not sure if your right on this one, also they say that the author is probabley Daniel Defoe. Ill see if i can find a link to the documentery on youtube and update the comment when I can. (Edit) I couldnt find the documentery unfortunatley, but it is called 'Britain's Outlaws: Highwaymen, Pirates and Rogues' the specific episode is episode 2, can you clear this up fir me, also, great vid! I love your content.
