The fact is that the connotations of a colour are almost purely contextual: in a hospital setting blue is a good colour because it is associated with cleanliness, relaxation and quiet, but the exact same colour of blue would be a terrible choice for food because it has a connotation of mould or rot. So in this case, knowing that it is a hospital corridor immediately makes it look like a set piece for a horror movie than the navigation lines you find in hospital corridors. Almost any other colour (except brown or yellow for connotations or other bodily excretions) would have been a much better choice.

And what they are talking about isn't even colour theory... colour theory is about making colours, how you mix them to get different colours, what colours compliment each other, how to use colours to make stuff look nice, etc. Not what feelings a colour could represent. That is dependent on the person. In my opinion, red is either blood, or really strong and intense emotions. Sometimes both. And also, real things are red just coz that's how they reflect and absorb the light. Like mammalian blood. It's only in art and literature that the meanings of colour has any real effect (BTW, art can mean design). In this case, it looks like the childrens hospital were going for arteries or something, and it ended up looking like someone dragged a bloody corpse into and out of a room.

Fun fact: Red is never used in plane interiors because, with red being the color of passion and intensity, it accentuates any feelings the passengers may have. This is a problem, because oftentimes new airplane riders are scared of crashing, and red would only accentuate that fear, especially in the event of an actual crash. A similar thing happens in hospitals, especially children’s, where patients are usually afraid of operations, checkups or other hoptal stuff. This is why both use blue, the color of peace and tranquility, reducing fear and making it easier to get rid of panic.

Oh, this reminds me of an irl college debate I had years ago. Over that past summer I had gone to an art museum, and there was a limited time exhibit of the work of a comic book artist from the 50s (note: I don't actually remember who it was or when they were active, or even if they're dead, it was a while ago.) But the thing is, this artist also had a side venture that was also featured in this exhibit, which were of...unclothed busty women in explicit situations. One of which was identical twins with an elephant seal btw. Anyway, the exhibit had some of the art pieces displayed in the hall outside for all ages, but the rest were behind an age gate. Thing is, a lot of the explicit pictures were in the all ages area, and a lot of the comic book stuff was in the adult area. Anyway I mentioned how I thought this was backwards, and a guy I was talking to started railing against the idea that I was daring to censor the artists vision. I wasn't even saying that, I just said it was a weird layout.
@emblemblade92453 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a pain in the ass on both accounts
@CrocvsGator3 жыл бұрын
@@emblemblade9245 Yeah and also art tends to get into museums because it was sold to them. So while the artist could make suggestions on how he'd like the work displayed, he has no say over how the museum was physically built in the first place, or how people will use what he sold.
@DimT6703 жыл бұрын
@@CrocvsGator also unless you are the government and stop smth from seeing the light of day, you literally can't censor things. Words mean things and censorship is only when the government is doing it via punishment and legal backing and not when its smth actually illegal (you cant censor child porn the same way stopping an assault isn't an infringement on personal freedom)
@CrocvsGator3 жыл бұрын
@@DimT670 I'm kind of confused by what you're saying, those last two things are illegal in multiple countries, including refusing to stop an assault, but also, there is a misconception that only the state can mandate censorship, strictly from an etymological point of view. Historically the Church has been able to do so, and there are cases such as William Hearst refusing his Newspapers to print information about Citizen Kane, and self censorship is indeed a thing, as are households who edit offensive material.

Surely green would be a better colour for a children's hospital? The colour green implies creativity, freshness harmony and most importantly, rejuvenation (the action or process of giving new energy or vigour to something.) green is also a colour associated with healing and nature and both of these aspects would seem like much more soothing and appropriate aspects to apply to a hospital for children than vibrancy, determination and ambition.
@insertname73253 жыл бұрын
Green in a hospital though also can be associated with disease and sickness.
@CactusCandy2 жыл бұрын
Green would probably be okay for a children's ward if it was paired in tandem with another color. Like, a bright purple could give a fun, almost Nickelodeon kind of feel. Or an orange. But yeah, green has strong connotations with disease and contagion. A sky blue might be a good middle ground between fun, calming, and clean, maybe?

For my Grade 12 drama class we had to make a warm-up game as an assignment. I came up with an improv game that utilized colour psychology and the new LED spotlights that had just been installed in the drama room. The game had it so a random colour would be applied to the lights, and the people on stage had a make a short improvised scene based on what they associated the light colour with. However, they would not know what the other people on stage associated it with until the scene started. It was pretty interesting seeing what people came up. For example, with the colour blue, one person acted sad, one acted like they were fishing, and another acted like they _were_ a fish. All in the same scene. It was hysterical. That’s just one example. …It was also one of the class’s favourites of all the games we came up with for the assignment, which is a big honor for me. And I was horrendously late in submitting it, too, so we did the game, like, three months after the assignment was supposed to be completed. I still got a high mark for it though, so it worked out. TL;DR: There are common associations with colours but not everyone will immediately think of the same thing first. I think of blood when I see that trail first thing. I’ll associate it with love and passion and health if it’s in the shape of a heart or a cross. Not a wavy line.
