2016 JHS Angry Charlie alert! It now has three-band EQ, so…
In this video Daniel and Mick are comparing the three different Charlies up to 2016, alongside the pedal that inspired it, the Marshall Guv’nor. Plus, just for good measure we also have a Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe, Keeley 1962x and a Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem.
Interesting bits and skip-to sections from today’s vid…
• What amps are we using today? 2:58
• Original Angry Charlie sound examples: 5:30
• Original Angry Charlie, 2016 Angry Charlie and @ (AT) compared - starts at 7:12
• 2016 Angry Charlie and Original Guv’nor compared - starts 11:13
• 2016 Angry Charlie & Original Angry Charlie presence and treble compared: 16:10
• Why the three-band EQ on the 2016 Angry Charlie makes it more versatile than the previous version: 18:20
(including proof that neither Mick nor Dan can play anything like Carlos Santana: 19:27)
• EQ on the original Guv’nor compared to the EQ on the 2016 Angry Charlie: 21:22
• Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe overview and compared with the 2016 Angry Charlie: 23:30
• Keeley 1962x overview: 30.10
(including proof that Mick can’t play anything like Clapton-era Bluesbreakers: 32:56)
• A little bit about Dan’s Les Paul: 35:25
• Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem sound examples with Les Paul and Strat: 37:04
• Dan’s Tele with all the pedals. And then ALL the pedals. Oh dear… 41:32

I have a old guvnor, a shredmaster and a purple plexi and they all sound great into my 71 super reverb. I preferred that sound over using them with my marshall head, which was already doing the marshall thing ...

The Marshall Guv'nor was the pedal that really introduced me to good pedal distortin. It remained the primary distortion in my first band until we got an ART Extreme. That pedal seems to be sadly forgotten.

Greetings from the States! I have the Wampler on my board. The post gain (left foot switch) is the Marshall overdrive. The pre gain (right foot switch) is a tube screamer circuit. When both are engaged it's supposed to sound like a screamer into a cranked Marshall. It compresses more, boosts the mids and tightens up the bass. I really like it. Tons of flexibility.

I know it’s been said but to expand: Angry Charlie circle and mustache are Charlie Browns round bald head and squiggly line shirt. In addition to connecting the brown sound of a Marshall to the character, the squiggly line also represents the sawtooth wave form produced when driving an amp into overdrive or the gain stages in an overdrive pedal.

Still glad I bought the @. Some of those like the Carpe are amazing, but the @, especially in 18 volt mode, is just so open and organic. I like the 1962x a lot, but it's sorta a different animal, more like the regular Charlie, more JTM 45 than JCM. An obscure pedal to substitute the '62 with would have been the Hot Modded 800 by some Texas company, is pretty sweet, but a little hard to come by. Always a great show, guys!

Re-Posting here: Guys, cheers from the US. I have followed Mick in Guitarist for years, and somehow stumbled on this show...have recently become obsessed, and am now an evangelical devotee. I play in a lot of cover bands - and my saving grace from a budget and ease o' use scenario has been the POD HD500 (FX ONLY). I've been psycho stoked about the Helix coming, and recently bought, fondled, and sadly - returned it. I returned the Helix because I'm undecided in my debate to move to stompboxes. But the topic is this: Can I combine stomps and digital modelers, specifically drives, comp, fuzz, etc. with digital modeling devices like M9. Why am I asking this question? The Helix sounded better with drives (and anything that modified gain structures), before hitting the input of the Helix. On the POD HD ...not even close. I understand this has to do with dynamic range. I would love to have Drives/comp/whammy into M9 (for all mod/dly/etc.) into amp. Then another M9 in loop. what about other multi-effects? drives into input?

I can vouch for the Wampler Plexi Drive. I've had mine for two years now and it will never be sold or traded. There's plenty of gain unless you do serious metal. I play an LP or 335 usually, into a Peavey Classic 30 for large gigs and a Katana for smaller ones. The boost side is an independent tube screamer type circuit. It's extremely flexible and Wampler makes good stuff. Highly recommended.

Omg its Friday and I just came back from a tiresome studio recording! How wonderful it is when you go back and see your favorite channel has uploaded another great video with two wonderful guys who are fun as well as knowing what they are doing! Thanks again! Btw, I got my Andy Timmons @ pedal couple of weeks ago and A/Bed that with the Angry Charlie V3 (the new one) in the shop, and honestly thought they both sounded great. BUT! the AT with that 3 positions toggle switch as well as having the Presence knob (which is lacking on the AC new version unfortunately I must say) is far more versatile IMHO. Also I noticed that as you said in the video the AC V3 is a definitely less bright. I guess the reason is that on the AC new version you don't have the Presence knob anymore which I think is very crucial for shaping and matching the sound with different amps. I think the Mid and Bass are already set perfect on these pedal and we don't really have to mess with them. AT is more versatile IMO but all the others are also very good. :)

I didn't expect it but the tonal change from 5:37 to 5:51 is HUGE. That bright switch, just wow... I'm amazed. For clean sounds maybe yes, but distortion a big no-no. Anyone knows exactly what it does? Boosts the treble (or cuts bass/mids maybe?) obviously but I mean in what freq range exactly?

For me the clear winners here are the JHS pedals. For one thing, they all sound great with little tweaking. The Plexi Drive seems finicky to me. It ended up sounding good but not as good as the JHS or the Guv. The original Angry Charlie and the new Andy Timmons @ model really have something in the low mids that give it the punch and warmth I was craving when I purchased my @. I would have loved you guys to spend more time on the @ because the 100 Watts mode make it a different animal than the other 2 ACs. The 25 Watts mode also just sings and adds so much sustain! The newest one was my least favorite of the 3 ACs in direct comparison. The original and @ both have a chewy, chunky quality that, having played the @ in a band context this week I know correlates to a great feel under the fingers. My bandmates immediately noticed the difference without me telling them I had something new. The new one has it too but less so than the original and @ from what I can hear here. I don't know about the original AC but the EQ controls on the @ are both low pass filters so they really let the natural warm low mids and punch get through no matter the setting. I love that. For sure many will prefer the control of a 3 band EQ but I'm really glad I chose the @. If I needed to tweak the EQ in the bass I could do it with my multieffects or a dedicated EQ. My Strat has active EMG pickups though and they really push these low mids. I've owned a few distortion pedals in my day and none ever sounded or felt as good to me as the @. Great job guys!

Interesting comparison with the Guv´nor. One of the reasons I stopped using it was the EQ: It was too "fiddly": I found a good sound, but as soon as I needed to change something, usually the top end, the mids would change, and then when you tried to fix that the whole sound was gone. I think I prefer boxes with just three, max four knobs..

wampler really should've just labeled the 2 gain knobs as "gain" and "boost" cause the "pre-gain" is just a screamer type boost independent from the main circuit

I used to do live sound and a couple of times a band would come in with a distortion pedal driving a loud twin reverb, and it would make my inner ear itch. I do not know if that makes any sense, but that is the only phrase I can use to explain this sensation.

Maybe you guys didn't get the full potencial of the Plexi-Drive deluxe by not understanding the pedal. It's a Plexi-like drive in the post gain section with active EQ and a TS808 on the pre gain stage (with only the volume knob). If you could, please make another video about it. Beside that, excelent work as always. My favorite music channel on YT. Perfect chemistry between you two. Thanks for all the lessons and entertainment. From a Brazil fan here.

Nice comparison. Just ordered, but haven’t got the Angry Charlie yet. Have you run it on 18V, and does it make a difference? So I just got it and it sounds great. In the video it sounded very muffled sounding so I was worried, but it is anything but muffled sounding.

Really fun demo! Nothing says “ROOCCKKK” like that tone. Also, really that classic Rock/Blues thingy. Loved the tone with all pickup types. Wondering how an old school RAT fits into the mix? I generally do a more overdrive type thing...run two Soul Food pedals into a nice tube amp. One set as a clean boost, pushed treble, running into the other, set as a darker distortion, with the tone around 10 o’clock. I have a compressor in the front of my board. I can build up to something like that tone, or have the different layers for different shapes and colors. Wonder how riding the volume would impact the sound on these pedals? Keeley and JHS seemed most usable...can’t afford the board space for double spaced pedals, unless they are doing serious double duty.

+David Dyte Hahahaha! Maybe hold on to them a little longer David. For a 'Blues' player I surprise myself that I never really got into Clappers. I was too railroaded on SRV, Albert Collins, Hendrix... And then fast forward to Landau, Grissom, Philip Sayce... All of whom owe a debt to Clappers of course! I should woodshed some Brit blues. :0)

+That Pedal Show I got into slide blues first, from listening to Johnny Winter, Son House, Robert Johnson, Ry Cooder... Clapton came a bit later and then I was gutted to realize he's pretty damn good with a slide, too, even just using one as an afterthought.

I’ve gotten to play with the @+ for a bit now. While it has some great features, and I’m not sure if an EQ pedal could fix this. Or if the AC3 has a more full spectrum. I found that the @ cut a good bit of bottom out of my Tone King Imperial mK2. I have many pedals on my board that sound great with that amp. But wanted a main modern distortion. It is indeed a modern distortion that takes to effects well. But I found it to sound like a cardboard box with power chords. It just doesn’t bloom, and seems to me it just takes over my amp and makes it more mid focused. Very lush for solos and such. Maybe it would sit well mic and in a mix or on a 2x12 cab. But for a single 1x12, it just seems there is a compromise in the bottom end that takes away from the Tone Kings warmer rounded sound. My old Jekyl and Hyde V1 fill out my amp more than the @. However the @ for soloing sounds killer and the 100w mode is great for chords that are not using the low E. Kicking it on as a main distortion just made even my overdrives sound bigger and more rounded. I haven’t had a chance to compare the AC3…but does it have a full EQ spectrum? The @ has a very tight bottom end and feels like it shrinks my guitar sound when playing in low register notes. I’ll be giving a Dirty Little Secret and possibly the AC3 a go, when JHS gets back to me about the EQ spectrum. This is something I don’t see posted a lot more should do. Capture to see where these pedals cut off or are voiced. Would save so much time for buyers! Buzz words on websites only do so much. If I know the AC3 has a lower frequency spectrum I would jump on it. But if it has the same crew spectrum as the @ with just 3 EQ knobs. Then I can’t say it would be any better on my amp. The @ def feels very tight but that may not be good to fill out the tonal range on a speaker. Who wants to go from soft to hard distortion playing Rhythm only to have the freq range shrink? Especially when you have 7 other pedals that don’t do this. I just found it very weird, and the @ would be a home run if it had just a bit more low end to fill out my amp. It makes it sound like an 8in speaker, vs a 12in playing power chords.

Now, I have a Marshall Governor 2 and a Tubescreamer in my Ibanez UE300 unit and will be looking to get some Richard Thompson type tones. I know over recent years he’s been associated with Fulltone OCD and Barber LTD will either of those Marshall or Ibanez pedals get into the ballpark...?Oh, and I have a TC MojoMojo on its way, knowing that the TC is supposed to be a bit of a OCD clone... What sort of settings should I perhaps be looking at..? The rest of the potential board I’m going to be using is A Schaller Treble/Bass Boost Volume Pedal EHX Pulsar Tremolo EHX Good Vibes Mod Tone analog Delay If I go through my Wem Clubman rather than the Marshall DSL401 (original EL84 version) I will have my DOD Reverb at the end of the chain. Any thoughts? Apart from, get a Fender amp😂

Interesting comment about pedals from the eighties. I still have a Boss SD 1 from that period and it's got this mojo that I can't explain and the same goes with my Ibanez TS 9. Would it be possible that tone may change due to the source of metals used in part production. By this I mean steel / alloy today may have more contamination of other metals to produce the same components?
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 8 жыл бұрын
+AussieCornerStudio some components have changed quite a lot in the last 30 years with laws like RoHS meaning it can't have nasty stuff like arsenic and cadmium in there any more. The difference in composition absolutely has an effect, but designs change as well,

I know i’m extremely late to the party (by over a year) but the Keeley “1962” is more related to the JTM45/SuperBass family than a SuperLead (or later Marshall). Presumably why Mick is churning out the old EC licks.... Of course by now the Keeley “Oxblood” is also worth a listen. Pete.

From this demo I definitely like the sound of the Guv'nor pedal more. I'm thinking about trying one of these out with my 1993 AC30tbx. I think the added treble reach from the Guv'nor might come in handy with the Vox's normal channel that I use. It's pretty warm, and I regularly have to push tone knobs up on drives for my WRHB Tele. Thanks for the help setting my mind between these pedals, guys.
