Love it! As a keyboardist, I always have to remind myself that it’s more about the notes I don’t play. Thank you for the insights into the inner working mechanics of the mind of Jack. Killer work and a phenomenal musician! Keep it up 👍

Hearing a keyboardist prepare for a gig, specially a seasoned one such as Jack, is always fascinating. We guitarist love to feel like rock stars, but the keyboards are usually what brings that extra oomph that get bands to the next level of awesomeness

Very helpful Jack! Joining a two guitar band with a first gig August 26th - learning a 40 song set list. Like the suggestion that sometimes the keys just need to lay out, stop trying to match a record exactly (compromises), focus on the songs that starts with keys, etc.

I have a similar issue with playing live (guitar). I spend lots of time sorting out tones for the twiddly fillers and always come off the gig thinking well that was OK but it could have been better. However the reaction from the punters is always positive so I guess the message is whilst we strive for our version of perfection we're there to provide entertainment to those who don't care about the how much thingamy is on the twiddly desending widdly-diddlys. Great vid. Cheers

Thanks Jack. Great stuff to know! Keyboards cover a lot of colours in the sound palette! I’m happy to hear that you hate keyboard brass. Btw, no one knows how long it takes to tune a 12 string.🤣❤️ 41:33 brings in tears 🤣 More vocals please!

This was fantastic Jack. Great to see a gigging musician honestly discussing roles, tricks and hints to get through a set. That pedal show board run downs were good, but this was excellent. Your keyboard/synth sounds were incredible. Best of all I think the quote was “piano sounds like ball bags on big speakers”…..😂
@phillerup

Jack, you're speaking my language mate, but I was pretty surprised, curious, and a little bit relieved (!) by your comment at 41.25 - "even posh keyboards' pianos, sound ballbags through big speakers..." 🤣 Love it! I've suspected this for years, and tried most of the brands! So it's frikkin' refreshing to hear someone with access to so many different keyboards, say it like it is! 😅But I'd LOVE to know, what your go-to piano sound is, if it simply HAS to be naked piano at a big gig !? Cheers mate. 🤜🤛

Thank you Jack! This video was so helpful and inspiring. I wish I would have heard someone of your skills say things to me earlier on in my career like “never going to win on (insert insane prog tune here)” or “compromise” when I was stressing out over really keyboard heavy tunes. So true and once you have realistic goals, it’s more fun and efficient to get on with the job. Couldn’t agree more about your take on keyboard horns. Please keep videos like these coming.

I have watched your old videos of it dozens of times and would love even more of em!
