20:55 - the greatest lesson I have ever learned on TPS. The fact that you can have a glorious sound in a vacuum of a single instrument / rig. But when in the presence of the dynamic of a band that sound is lost. That was an amazing revelation. When the instrument /rig is using nearly the entire audio spectrum in a bedroom sound, you can't cut through the mix of those other frequencies in a live band setting. ( search - Interactive Frequency Chart). Thank you TPS. This is a Master Class!

Interesting observation I've made over the last 34 years of playing in bands. The mid boosting, in my opinion, is more effective in bigger bands with a rhythm guitar player and a keyboard. However, in a trio setup, (bass, drums, and guitar), the mid boosting didn't give me such favorable results. It made the whole band sound weak and thin during the solos. I always found it necessary to slightly boost the mids, but I also had to boost the lows too. Otherwise I would get lost in the mix. Am I alone with this opinion? What do you guys think? The difference between playing in a trio as opposed to being in a bigger band.
@joequintana55465 жыл бұрын
By the way, most of the time I play without effects. On very special occasions I'll add a wah and an analog delay which I'll only activate for solos. And I set it to where you barely hear it.

Nice show fellas all great recommendations. I was shocked about not including clean boosts or compressors as a tool for overdrive solos. I was really hoping to hear the Cali76 as a boost after the carpe diam or angry charlie. Just a suggestion I think it would sound awesome as a lead tone. I use my Barber Tone Press for this purpose after my Small Fry I have a suspicion that the 76 after the Carpe or Charlie would be fantastic. So curious.
@SimAlex200005 жыл бұрын
In regard to gain. I am a big muff fanatic. I assumed the best thing to do was set the sustain at 100%. I tried that for a while. It was ... fine. The real game changer was adding overdrives before and also after the big muff and rolling the sustain (“gain knob”) way down actually - suddenly this whole spectrum of upper and lower mids just blew up the big muff in the best possible way. Rhythm, solos, doesn’t matter. Learning the importance of mids was like getting a new instrument.

I recently tried a mini tube screamer set to the extreme with volume all the way, tone around 2 o clock, and drive set to lowest, going into the angry charlie, with bass at 3 o clock to bring back some lows, mid turn down to 9 o clock because of the tube screamer, high around 1 o clock, gain at 9 o clock and level at 2/3 o clock to push the amp. I find this is a great sound that can be fully adjusted depending on the guitar/amp.

I never really dissect things into bits and pieces. I just trying to digest by ear, what possible steps my favorite musician has gone through. One of many that struck my ears was our dearest Andy Timmons. I noticed how his dirty solo tones are different than his rhythm or clean section. I noticed, midrange, reverb, echo (delay), and sustain were there. Sustain, be it with compressor pedal, some OD pedal, I wasn't too picky (eventually I used dirty channel of the amp, OD pedal or BOSS Compressor). I managed to create my own liking and use it through several shows. BUT THIS VIDEO YOU GUYS DID, quite explain and clearly give me something more to think about. Thanks a lot.

I've got one too and can get some decent sounds out of it. Can I ask how you set it and use it for rhythm versus lead? Do you use the 90s mode toggle or the asym wide mode?
@GavinMcLeod8 жыл бұрын
+pjlenny22 for solos I'll kick in the boost side set to about 9 o'clock. It's got a ton of headroom and I find if you use it with another od pedal you can get some great tones. The left side I use in the wide mode for some squishy rhythm tones and I'll use comp cut for a more crunchy boost. Hopefully this helps!

+zaqintosh I stick to the wide mode for rhythm and light lead and I'll kick in the boost side if I need a volume bump for a solo.

After watching once again, the tip from Daniel regarding the tone is amazing. Therefore in order to properly boost for solos I may be searching for a compressor that I may change the tone, just as Daniel said, reducing the low end and focusing on mids and a little treble for solos. Amazing how the beautiful rhythm tone sounded muddy and obscure when only boosted on volume. But after changing the tone it really combined and pronounced better the lead guitar without a need to increase the volume too much. I liked that. Great tips guys. GREAT tips. Keep it up!! Dan/Mick, what I am taking away from your video here is that a lead boost is first going to benefit by a Tube Screamer or Klon put after the main heavy overdrive to boost the mids and lop-off bass. But the lead sound also can benefit from using the Keeley 30 MS on the lead sound implementing just a small delay of a few milli-seconds. After that, the lead tone can benefit from a long, quarter note delay. So, the ordering of pedals would be to have the main heavy overdrive/distortion pedal, followed by a lead tone grouping consisting of the Tube Screamer/Klon, the Keeley 30 MS, and then the quarter note delay, and maybe a little reverb after all of that. So technically you would be running two delays in series, except that, having the Keeley on hand frees up your main delay pedal to be concerned with only executing the long delays, as regardless of the length of the long delay, the Keeley 30 MS in front of it would be valid in many lead cases. Am I correct?

Excellent video, Mick and Dan! The concepts you've presented should be taught to every musician (not just guitar players).

One thing I found after jamming with the Egnater amp this weekend, is that the dirty tone I use for rhythm works perfectly for solos over softer sections of music, maybe a clean boost if I want to be able to get a bit of feedback (like for the intro solo to Skynard's That Smell). If I don't want much gain in my tone, the clean boost or a TS circuit set as a boost on the clean channel works too. For solos over a rhythm that is louder and already dirty, the tried and true TS-9 or TS-808 set as a boost or an EQ with a slight level and mid boost is perfect. There is a bit more gain, but mostly a volume boost.

If it isn't beating a dead horse yet, and you guys are wanting to do more gain staging focused, I'd love to see ones about compressor/od/boost placement (comp pre or post od?, how boost interact with comps, doubling up comps, etc.), or good use for speaker attenuators and comparison of popular/quality models (even though they are not really pedals). Thanks for the time, energy, and compassion you guys put into this, it's much appreciated.

Doh, just came across the "Clean Boost, Compressor, Treble Boost and Overdrive: What Order?" on the old YT channel, exactly what I was looking for! Great stuff as always guys.. Even broader than solo tones...tones within a musical setting. The main thing I aim for in life is to be what I call 'tonally appropriate'. In my case, I'm not playing against another electric guitarist but a singer who uses alt tuned DI's acoustic. His parts formed the basis of the creation of those songs so I have to be aware not to eat up too much of his sonic space. Over the years I've been playing with him I've evolved a tone which is rich and organic enough to please me without treading on his toes. Seems these days I hear a LOT of bands where people are competing in the same sonic spaces.

This video change the way i use my pedals. I read in a lot of forums that the TS9 go before the Rat, but i was needing a boost for my solos. Im gonna try the TS9 after the Rat and see what happens. Thank for all your help guys. You are amazing ✊🏻 Greetings from Chile

If I had to be in a two guitar band I would insist the Rhythm player use a Collings 290DC S and a Victory The Sheriff.That sound is perfect. Mick you are the "Wing Man of the Century". Great video guys.

PhotoShop reference at 31'30" - no one uses drop shadows anymore,sadly. It's all about flat design. When I was learning reverb and getting frustrated with my audio mixes I'd leave off reverb altogether, until a fellow audio engineer said "It needs Reverb, Reverb is kinda like a drop-shadow." :) Also I thought the EQ really made a subtle but huge difference, it just sounded PRO!!! Funny cause EQ and Compression are the 2 most important processing devices in mixing/recording studios.

I'd love a video about how to get set things so vocal, drum and guitar are all clear in the mix.

Superb as always chaps- I've learned a lot from this -the noise of pennies dropping was only slightly louder than the new tone I dialed in thanks to this vid.

Great show guys. Answered and solved one of many sound problems that I have been experiencing in my band. Front of house keeps telling me Im TOO LOUD in general so keep the stage sound in check but when it comes to solo time Punters say I need to come up, or Not Loud enough. By re-thinking my boost options ( I have an OCD and mini Tube Screamer on the way) may solve this issue for all and keep everyone happy. What we hear on stage is nothing like out front so it's hard to get a handle on the causes and find a cure. Hence you show is a world beater and is invaluable for us weekend hacks like me. Cheers and luv yir work.

Great video! It's amazing how many people don't understand this concept. I just traded my Laney Cub 12, a Korean Ibanez, and a handful of pedals I just wasn't bonding with for an Egnater a Rebel 30. I'm floored broth versatility of this amp. So much headroom and volume for just 30 watts... Especially after using a 15 watt amp for do long. If I wanted to I could easily use nothing but the amps footswitch and my guitar's controls to go between clean, crunch and lead. So far, I'm just getting familiar with the amp and how it's controls affect its sound, but I can't wait to try some of the pedals that avoided the Purge. I kept anything I felt would be hard to find, like the Timmy and my Visual Sound Angry Fuzz, as well as a few pedals I really like and use a lot like the Son Of Hyde, Open Road, Eno Trouble and Boosta Grande.

Always get all my drives from my amp nowadays can't be bothered with pedals they always have let me down, I started with a boss sd1 when I stood on that it dissapeared and hid behind the amp, to much fiddling about getting volume balance etc, you never have to worry about being heard with a three channel + amp like TSL Jvm Mesa boss Katana etc I'm happy with that, because every drive pedal I've bought is in its box in the cupboard upstairs Love the show fantastic playing

It's great, guys! I really enjoy videos like this - very informative and helpful, for when you need a little bit of insight. I've been using the new Boss GT-1 multi effects processor, since it came out, and I must say I really enjoy it! One of the greatest things is a pre-set assign function called 'OD SOLO' or 'PREAMP SOLO'. Both meaning that if I have either an Overdrive stomp on, in my patches, or an overdriven preamp, then that assign is going to take that particulat amp or overdrive into SOLO MODE. This will automatically boost the sound (volume) and change the EQ characteristics (mid-range, etc.) and make it very easy to stand out, and get heard :-) Fantastic! Cheers! :-)

+GuitarNTabs Aha! That's super useful. We suspect it drops the bass, boosts mids and highs. Nice one!

Hi! :-) I must say, it's really nice to actually hear/get a reply from you guys! I truly appreciate that! Indeed, it's super nice, and it has helped me out a bunch of times! Another reason why I really like the Boss multi effects. Yes, I suspect that you're right - I'll give it a closer examination next time! Cheers, guys! And thanks for the reply :-)

I've got a Line 6 M9 as my "do all modulation effects" pedal on the board I use with a cover band, and I have a preset for an EQ pedal set up with a mid boost, and it pushes me through for solos effortlessly. Awesome sound, and would HIGHLY recommend the EQ pedal boost for solos if you don't want to drastically change your existing tone.

Great job getting back on the horn, fellas. But in all seriousness, this served as a great reminder for me. I get so obsessed with how my setup sounds when home alone that I forget about the needs of playing in context with my band. I definitely have some tweaking to do when I get home.
