I liked your comment about thinking of your solo volume as needing to take over the space left by the lead vocal. In jazz, setting your solo volume to match the trumpet or sax is also a good place to start.
@patrickfitzgerald28615 жыл бұрын
@David Malone - Most jazz players seem to understand the concept of "big ears" through training and experience. Except at the highest levels, most electric rock and blues players simply do not pay much attention to what others are playing, and the performance suffers as a result.

My additions for soloing/gainstaging are 1. a fuzz to boost any drive pedal and clean up with guitar volume (old and new school?) Also I noticed on clean tones a nice additional compression that keeps dynamics/transients natural with more focus on the mid frequencies at the same time 2. a boost pedal in the fx-loop to saturate the power tubes more 3. EQ Pedal: Negative EQing for tightening up the rhythm sound & pedal off for soloing (more bass/top end and volume) Thanks for your work - useful & HQ!

Not really a question, but my wife, who also bought me 2 TPS t-shirts for our anniversary, sat down with me towards the end of the video and recognized the Wampler Ego Mini from my personal board. Proud moment for sure. Excellent tips! Especially regarding less gain and working backwards volume-wise.

I am so grateful to you guys for talking about delay instead of reverb. I find that sooo many people over use reverb with solos and I find that all it does is do the opposite of what they want. They want space and want to be heard. But reverb usually pushes you back in the mix, where delay give you space but also clarity and audibility. You’ve helped so many young players out there! Great job!

Took me years to realise I needed a clean boost in the loop to give me the volume boost for solos. It doesn't colour the guitar sound and gives me that little edge to come up in the mix as and when required.

Fellas, in light of the recent shows,I have a challenge for y'all. Please do a show on several small amps that have relatively large headroom and are reasonably priced. Amps that will allow the pedals to do a good part of the work (Like the Supro 1970RK) ...I believe that if y'all are going to fight the good fight against silent stages, more solutions need to be given as alternative to modelers/digital amps. Y'all did that with the Ox and BOSS tube expander and y'all have done a show on small amps. But we need a show on small amps with a lot of headroom that are for home use and gig worthy. Cheers!

Great and helpful episode guys! I think the best solo boost I've found is that really short slap back, almost a doubler. I like the way Matt Schofield put it, "it's like the back wall." Mine happens to be a broken EHX Memory Toy that I got for 25 dollars and can only get one repeat out of (feedback pot is broken), but it is probably the most consistent pedal on my board, and adds spread and perceived volume to whatever sound I'm using. Thanks for more great tones this week!
@gabriell87145 жыл бұрын
Ive almost never use my tone knob before until I've got Allan Holdsworth playing ! That completely changed my perspective on solo tones. Those reedy/wind instrument sounds he could get by rolling back his tone knob are by far my favorite solo tone ever especially in Hard hat area where he was playing a modded dual-rectifier. He had an incredible control and musical approach over is compressed saturated tone. I know that it might not be everyone cups of tea but I found that whit his combination of tone/touch/melody created some of the most emotionals guitar solos ever.

Totally with you on the Klon circuit. It's been my solo boost of choice running after my other OD's for about 12-13 years now I think. It just does a psycho-acoustic trick that I haven't ever quite had anything else do. The dynamics, headroom and the EQ shape can put me up front without blistering volume & it also has this ability to make single notes thicker without too much compression. I always say switching on that circuit makes it sound like you've gone up a gauge of strings.
@mattheweastel1295 жыл бұрын

The day I tried putting a GE-7 in the loop with a bit of an upper-mid hump and a tiny level bump, it changed my life. With a clean tone, it's so easy to just hit a Klon-ish pedal or a clean boost to get where you need to go but I was racking my brain for a long time on how to boost an already gunned high-gain amp and an eq pedal in the loop was absolutely the answer (FOR ME). Cheers guys, happy weekend!

I remember the first 3 hour gig I did and after my first couple of solos I panicked since I knew I was out of ideas ha. That show really taught me pacing, what to practice and the importance of phrasing and economy. With regard tone, my lead tone is often cleaner than my rhythm sound. Like Dan said, I want it to come in like the vocals with a similar quality, cut and level. I also find for high gain, when it's needed, a fuzz will give a fat cutting sound while maintaining clarity (fuzz dependant of course).

I think Pete Townshend on Live At Leeds is a good example of someone using the volume pot to "switch" between lead and rhythm. Also, the mid-song amp switch by swapping cords - brilliant! Will have to try that with my band :)
@jakestewartmusic5 жыл бұрын
The statement y'all made about the old school approach and the dynamic in the amp is exactly why I plug my Esquire straight into my Carr Rambler, crank it, and use the volume knob. I love the simplicity and the tone. Was surprised to find out how audible my cleans were when backing off and how my amp wasn't too loud when it came time to solo. It feels like I always have the right amount of gain given the volume I'm playing at. Highly overdriven tones at quiet volumes sound a bit foreign to me now. Cheers!
@el0blaino10 ай бұрын
Great lesson! New to electric guitar, I just bought my first looper and realized I needed to get away from my sound to play the solo and literally thought “Gee I guess I need a box to step on to give me ‘more loud’” so having the best options all explained and demo’d like this could not have been more timely. It is now clearer how what I need will depend on clean/gain and pickup type.

Another great show chaps. One thing Mick alluded to with his tip of 'play half as many notes as you think you want to play', is the use of 'space' in a solo. Audibility and tone are rightly crucial to being heard above the band, but the use of space, i.e. when you don't play, can be a great juxtaposition and bring attention to your solo. The 'gaps' you leave can highlight and accentuate the notes that you do play. A good example is Phil Manzanera's solo in the Roxy Music song 'Oh Yeah'.

I’m SO glad you revisited this subject! It is so useful and so difficult to get right. It is especially helpful that you used pedals I actually own and use or very similar at least. The D&M covers the OCD and Klon roles and a Keeley compressor is close enough. It’s much more useful when you show HOW to use a pedal to its full potential instead of just demoing it with all the knobs at 12:00.

Love the old/new school distinction, guys - I’m finding over the years that I’m ending up somewhere between the two, definitely using vol and tone pots more, and having more gain dialed into my base tone - from either a fuzz and/or a preamp. For the longest time, I had a Spark Mini as a (lots) “more” pedal at the end of everything and it worked great. Took it off my board about 2 years ago, and I really don’t miss it.
@blairmichaelhogan45025 жыл бұрын
Agreed...i did kinda the same thing. I used to never be without an MXR micro amp last in my chain. I got rid of it to save space and thought I’d miss it a lot. Nowadays I just have a few low gain drives that can be boosts or OD depending on the amp situation, and ride my guitar’s volume a lot more than I used to.

Tc spark mini or alike clean boost in the loop for a solo boost. Also a guitar that cuts is so important. Really enjoying this series of episodes guys. I stack a Tube Screamer before an OCD. After watching this episode, I set the drive relatively low (8 o'clock-ish) on the OCD and bumped the tone up higher than usual for me (2 o'clock-ish). OCD toggle set to HP and volume set to match the TS output. Ended up with a nice high-mid kick to the TS output when I stepped on the OCD. I think that would work well to get a solo to cut through. Thanks for the inspiration!

Part Two of Solo Tone! About time :-) One of the common setups I use with my amp that has an effects loop is to put an EHX Signal Pad in the loop and use the footswitch for the FX Loop to turn down the volume for rhythm level. Great content! And both of you guys, your playing is tip top! I always feel inspired after watching the show...
I had just re-watched "Choosing the right overdrive pedal..." from TPS, and then this new one arrived. As you said, you have covered this before, but a useful refresher nevertheless. You also mentioned one of my gripes: singers who complain that "you got a little loud during your solo". This coming from the guy who is in the front of house system -- the instruments were not -- and has a massive monitor at his feet. I don't know how many times I've said the same thing you did: guitar solo should often be as loud as lead vocal. If your guitar is not in the PA -- or you don't have a reliable sound person running -- you need a significant boost to have the guitar sit properly in the mix the audience hears when it comes time to take the spotlight. And many thanks for the thoughts on using delay. Sounded really good. I'm eager to give it a try.

I'm very much the "baseline tone and add to it in incremental stages" sort of girl. All of my gain stages are very low gain, but as they add up, they get a little dirtier, a little louder, and add just a little bit more treble boost.

Another great episode! I've been playing for nearly 40 years, and it's really only in the last 7 years I've discovered the joys of not just turning up, but of shaping my solo tones for bite and cut. Using the Helix as my main rig now for the past 2 years, I use their great "Snapshot" feature to kick on some delay, cut a bit of the lows, boost the mids a bit, and and a few extra dB at the output to really be heard... all with a single press of a button. Wish I learned about this at the beginning of my guitar adventures.

go P-90s, I agree. With fender SCs Dan's timbre from 25:00-30:00 is way too gravelly into a high-gain pedal, in particular the picking/onset of the note...it is a sound that can work but only works with certain songs,; more than ten minutes of that is very fatiguing on most ears.

Just catching up on some shows I missed. Fantastic show! A lot to chew on even for an old sod like me. Your tips were spot on. I started gigging at a time when there really weren’t many pedals available. Learning to use the volume knob is the best advice for new players. Old school’s the only school. In terms of how to construct a solo, once again your tips are great. I might add something that Thelonius Monk used to tell his band “Don’t play all that other sh*t. Play the melody.” Think of a solo as a melody with a beginning, middle and resolution rather than a bunch of riffs strung together. This goes along your advice to breath. Jerry Garcia constructed many of his solos around the vocal melody. Thanks for all the great info.
