In this video, Dan talks with Dave Weiner, long-serving guitarist and right-hand man to the venerable Steve Vai.
We caught up with Dave during Vai's Passion and Warfare 25th Anniversary tour in Bristol, UK. Dave tells us a little about what it's like to play alongside the guitar legend, before showing us through his tour rig and PRS guitars: two seven strings - one based on the 513 platform and the other an ash body Custom 24 - and a six-string S2 Custom 24.
Dave's main amps are a Friedman BE100, supported with a Marshall JCM2000 DSL 100, running stereo, into Orange 4x12 cabinets. The Friedman is used in its entirety, but only the power section of the Marshall is used. The signal is controlled/split via TheGigRig G2, via the Eventide H9's feeding both effects returns in stereo. That goes...
Guitar, wah/drive effects/compresion, Friedman BE guitar input.
Friedman effects send, Eventide H9s, one return to Friedman effects return, other return to Marshall effects return.
Thank you so much to Dave for his time during a busy tour day, and the rest of the Vai crew for putting up with us getting in the way!

I agree. Have been listening to Dave for about 7 years and he has a fully grown awareness of sounds, what sound to use in what situation etc - which is very impressive. Also I find he has been using a whole lot of the "2 & 4"-positions (split humbucker + singlecoil) on his guitars in the last couple of years, which is very interesting. Many guitar players tend to overlook those settings and use the humbuckers only 90% of the time, but I think Dave uses these tones in a very tasteful way. He's a truly great player!

That was as good as it gets - Dave is so engaging and enthusiastic - clearly a players player. I've watched a lot of these sorts of rig reviews and it is so obvious when someone is digging it and when they aren't. This is one of the best. And what a player - I mean to have this gig you sort of have to be but as with Steven Wilson I'll be exploring more of his work as I am truly impressed!

I don't always understand everything Steve Vai does but Passion and Warfare was such an influential album on my generation of guitar players (I must have bought it at least 3 times). The London Palladium Passion and Warfare gig will always be a standout gig for me - a hugely enjoyable mix of nostalgia, amazing musicianship and maybe too much beer. I was surprised how good this guy was and how he was able to shine in this context. Although I can't even conceive the level of musicianship required to play in Vais band so I suppose I should have known that Vai would have an incredible guitarist in his band (apart from himself...).

Love it! It's the first time that I heard a Friedman amp sound the way that it speaks to me! They're brilliant amps but I never thought they're for my taste, until hearing him play his amp. It doesn't seem like a coincidence that lately I've run to Wampler pedals everywhere (I mean I already follow the man and I've seen the pedals on the show, but it seems like every big player also recognizes his work as top, especially Tumnus).

Here's a show idea. As I'd mentioned recently in some other comments of your other videos, I've been trying to increase the clean headroom of my amp. Tubes... I found that putting something other than the usual 12AX7 in my V1 position of the preamp, I was able to get a bit more headroom. I used a 12AY7 but there are a few more options depending on where you want to go. I also found changing my power tubes got me slightly more headroom. Since I'm using an EL84 powered amp, my substitution choices were limited to different brands. Stock tubes in my amp were Ruby. I'm using Mesa/Boogie EL84's in the power section (which to my understanding are rebranded JJ's that are tested to meet particular specs). For the 12AY7 I used EHX.

Hi Mick and Dan, I just wanted to make a subtle suggestion off of the back just watching Guitar Paradiso on Andertons TV. One word; Roland, some other words and numbers; jazz chorus 40. What a beautiful sounding clean amp! Surely an episode (for that's how I see them) hooking it up to Dan's board for all kinds of sonic pleasure, and thusly crushing all of our transistor snobberies in one foul swoop? Cheers kees

+Kees Toft We'll get one in Kees. I was surprised by it when we did it for Paradiso. It sounded sooooo much better than I remember the old 120s sounding on the OD side.... But I'd still have a Hot Rod Deluxe and and every day of the week. It's not snobbish, it's just a preference. Still, let's do this on video... Cheers!

hi guys. another great show. I have to thank you guys a lot for inspiring decisions I have made for my rig. you guys definitely gave me the push to run 2 amps and, wow, what a difference. I'm constantly smiling at my tone now instead of constantly tweaking knobs trying to find a tone that cuts through etc. I went with a Marshall haze 15 watt head and a Vox night train 15 watt. the only part of my tone I am struggling with now is a distortion tone. I'm mainly an overdrive guy over distortion but would like a distortion pedal as a bit of a different flavor. currently have borrowed a big muff but it's way too scooped and fizzy through my setup. do you have any pedals that are reasonably priced that you think it may be worth trying. cheers. Dan, as you are experienced with pedal switching and MIDI, could you and Mick make a video in the future on the best way to switch pedals when you need a lot (and I mean A LOT) of different sounds for a gig? I'm the only guitarist in a 4 piece band (vocals, drums, bass & guitar) and I want to use MIDI devices like delay and reverb, and multi-purpose devices like the Eventide H9 to make each song sound interesting and unique... So the 'solo', 'rhythm' or 'clean' sound for each song might be unique, or only used on 2 or 3 songs at most. What would be the best way to achieve this? Have you come across artists who do a heck of a lot of switching during gigs, and if so how do they handle it? I've read about MIDI foot controllers that can have songs and setlists programmed. I've also seen MIDI foot controllers that have a small display above each footswitch. I'm wondering if this would be the solution, connected remotely to control devices like the Gig Rig, so that the pedalboard is hidden away safely at the back of the stage? Cheers guys.
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 8 жыл бұрын
+ForViewingOnly Um, you know what G2 is for, right? G2 can handle all of this, remotely if necessary FVO. It's not a MiDI switcher per se, but it can control all your analogue and MIDI pedals so you can get one-touch switching for sounds. Thanks for watching!
