In this episode Daniel and Mick compare five OD/distortion pedals all inspired by the fabled Marshall ‘Plexi’ sound. The pedal sounds and discussion begin at 08:49, so if you want to avoid all the preamble, go straight there.
The term ‘Plexi’ commonly refers to Marshall amps made from the mid 1960s to the early 1970s; non-master volume heads that featured a gold Plexiglas control panel. They include certain JTM45s (including ‘Bluesbreaker' combos) and of course the now legendary 50- and 100-watt Super Lead, Super bass and Major models. It’s a huge range of tonal ground when you consider that those amps lie at the heart of tones from Eric Clapton (John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Cream), Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Paul Kossoff, Edward Van Halen and many more, not to mention more recent stars including Joe Bonamassa and Eric Johnson.
How close can these pedals hope to get in evoking those all-time classic tones?

as an experiment, I bought a wampler plexi drive. I then took it home, hooked it up to my 50w 1987X plexi, connected a 4x12 with greenbacks, a 2x12 with GT75s, got out my Les paul with the 500T bridge pickup, tuned to DADGAD, dimed both the pedal and the plexi then played the opening riff to Kashmir. Everything went grey, i passed out and woke up in a puddle of sweat. I now have what i believe is a black hole in my music room. One of my cats has disappeared and I havent seen my wife for two days. I miss the cat. :P

Don't EVER let anyone tell you the shows are too long. People sit on their cans for hours watching hour long TV shows, and we get you guys once a week. ?? I swear people just can't be happy. Anyway...45 -60 minutes is perfect. And if people are too ADD to handle it, they can use the chapter links you've provided. Great job providing literally every piece of info needed on what's being used, etc. Anyway, loved the show again this week. Was dying for Dan to get to the treble pickup on the Rothwell just to hear it. Great example of the value of the show beyond just good entertainment...I had never heard of that pedal before. Thanks again guys.

Great show! Episodes are definitely NOT too long, the stories you tell are always informative (you often mention bands I go listen to and usually love) and entertaining, and the back story to pedals/amps/guitars are always helpful! Keep doing what you're doing, I love it! Keep using high end guitars, amps, and pedals too. There are plenty of resources on KZbin for "affordable" gear, but there are a lot of us who want to hear the higher end stuff too!!

Just wanted to say that you guys kill it, consistently!! As a teenager in the 80's, the pedals we had sucked. And much like Rabea, when he turned away from pedals for pure amp driven tones, I did the same in my youth. You guys have rekindled a serious love for pedals and I have a rather lengthy list of pedals that I will now be getting. You've shown me the proper way to employ them and also the best ones to fit both my style(s) and the tones that I'm seeking. Now, I've noticed that you guys are regularly commenting on the Angry Chuck graphic. If you've ever seen Peanuts in animated or strip form. The "zig-zag" is Charlie Brown's shirt, and the round head is simply Charlie Brown's head, without it actually being his head/face (as they would have to pay royalties and apply for usage of the Charlie Brown likeness). Just figured that I'd throw that in. You keep doing vids and I'll keep learning!!! Cheers!!!

Daniel, Mick, about the "beano" name, wasn't it after Clapton hided his face behind a "Beano" comic book on the cover of John Mayall's Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton album? I read he was bored to death whislt the photo shoot of the album's cover and didn't want to pose for the photographer, basically.

Hey Mick. I've been wondering if your Jimi strat is the MIM version or a more expensive model. Thanks guys!
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 7 жыл бұрын
+Gavin McLeod it's not actually a Jimi Strat (although clearly it was the precursor to one, or postcursor or whatever, to use a terrible word). It's a MIM special edition 60s Reverse Headstock Stratocaster that was exclusive to one of the big US retail chains around 2007/2008. Fast forward to about two months ago and I'd been discussion the reverse peghead thing with a few people. Next day, walked into Andertons and there it was, £399 used. Picked it up, liked it instantly, absolutely mad to pass it up. Serendipitous. It'll get new pickups soon and a cap on the second tone pot. Maybe some wire wool on the neck and board. Nice big frets though. Sweet!
@GavinMcLeod
@GavinMcLeod 7 жыл бұрын
Good find! Nothing wrong with the MIM guitars in my opinion, especially when you find such a great one. The reversed headstock and pickup really give it that subtle Jimi tone for sure. Thanks for the info Mick, cheers!

They tour all around the world! I've seen them at the O2 and The Royal Albert Hall. You could close your eyes, and you'd think you were listening to Floyd themselves.

Probably the best plexi pedal ever, it turns your amp into an authentic Marshall, has tons of gain too. I sold mine to buy a Bogner Ecstasy blue and I'll always regret it

Think it would be nice to see more budget pedals in these videos... even just one for a comparison to see how they stack up. in this case would have been cool to see something like the tone city golden plexi

Yeah I realise this. Which is why i think it would be cool almost as an extra one. like "Here are 4 or 5 pedals that are great and here's one that is more affordable and lets see what it's like in comparison". I'd say it would be interesting because I'm sure there would be quite varying results ones that are as good or nearly so and ones that would be noticeably worse

+ResistReact I think Andertons do a series where it is expensive verses nonexpensive. The name is David vs Goliath. I recommend you check it out. Idk if they have one about a Marshall plexi. Hope this helps!

Killer show this week. I really love that! For me the best plexi style overdrive that I've played so far (even though it's not marketed as one) is the Thorpy FX gunshot. That thing is just in it's own league in my opinion..

Is the original Wampler Plexi Drive the same as PD Deluxe without the TS circuit? Or are there other enhancements? To my ears, the PD is the only one that captures that iconic high-mid "chirp" pick attack compression.
