That Pedal Show

Күн бұрын

PLEASE NOTE: This video was first posted December 2 2016 and contained four pedals.
We took it down to re-shoot the Source Audio and Boss sections (go here for that • That Pedal Show - Mega... ), so this is a repost of the first half of the video... featuring the TC Electronic & Korg delays only.
Welcome to That Pedal Show! Please subscribe to our channel and visit our store www.thatpedalshowstore.com
In this episode Daniel and Mick follow up on a video we did back in August 2016 on serious, multifunction delays. It wasn’t so long ago that modern, multifunction delays in pedal format didn’t exist. But the Line 6 DL4 came along and changed all our expectations.
In this episode we pick the story back up with a duet of superb modern delays…

Love my Alter Ego x4. Its the only one I could find that truly nails my old EP3 and Space Echo delay sounds. These could all have their own full video as even the AEx4 is quite deceptively comprehensive. Great video (again) guys! Vids are always better with beer btw!

Thank you for using the TC. I have the smaller version. It's wonderful. Really can't beat it for the vast variety of analog tones you can get. So happy also to hear the Korg. The Edge would be proud.

It pays to crack a manual; the SDD3K aside from having loads of character and control, also has a few hidden functions, like ducking. The modulation knob is a very unusual feature, in that it's continuously variable from Sine to triangle, square and ending at random with interesting points between. The Alter Ego X4 is great sounding and easy to use, but has one confounding flaw; there is no control over modulation whatsoever, unless you use a Toneprint, in which case you can't use those stunning vintage models. Then again, at its price point, there's no multi delay that beats it. Both pedals have a control input, but the Korg can control multiple simultaneous parameters and even selectively invert its control knob parameters, which as you might imagine, can get some really insane sounds.

Great rundown (as always). Some 5 years later, a couple things worth mentioning: Both pedals have extremely limited MIDI functionality (even for the time), consisting of changing presets (any of them for the SDD-3000, saved presets 1-3 for the AEX4), clock on the AEX4 (supposedly, but I haven't gotten it to work). That's it! No turning the presets off or on, no tempo/clock (for the SDD3000), no control over *any* parameters / expression stuff, no looping control via MIDI, etc. Really, you can just call up a preset and that's it. I've been using a SDD3000 as my main delay for a few years now and I've even set up the presets in the "banks" to be A = on, B = off, with multiple copies of each preset with tempos for the different times already dialed in. I recently picked up the AEX4 figuring that the MIDI can't be as limited as the SDD3000... but: wrong, change preset only (which is apparently also pretty much the case for their flagship Plethora X5/X3 pedals, too. C'mon Behringer! Entäuschend!) MIDI control/implementation isn't a deal breaker, but it is amazing to have it (kind of like the feeling you got when you discovered you could save your sounds to a preset on the DL4!) and disappointing to have it fall short (with no firmware updates, etc. And, in the SDD-3000's case, a totally discontinued pedal). That said, both pedals make absolutely gorgeous sounds. Both are equally huge. The Korg may win out for having more slots to save sounds and for the huge range of parameters, while the TC wins for being way more intuitive (and way, way cheaper).

I have an original KORG SDD 3000 rack unit I had in storage for the last 20 years. I plugged it in the other day... it's all about cranking the preamp. The delay effects are trippy but the tone from pushing the front of an amp with it is unreal. I'm going to use this thing on bypass just for the preamp. It really creates a sharp attack with a hint of breakup. very stoked.

Beautiful show, guys. When it comes to mega-delays (and various other effects) I've been spoiled by the Eventide H9 since it was introduced. There's no fiddling with USB cables, there's no hunching over the pedalboard tweaking knobs and menus. Use the Bluetooth app on an iOS device or computer, and it just makes life so much easier in my studio work! Sounds great, but what puts it over the top for me is how easy it is to get the most out of it. However, my #1 delay machine is a Fulltone Tube Tape Echo, that sounds...well...delicious, and it's bonehead simple to use. I don't mind the slight maintenance stuff.

Absolutely loved the video! I have seen 'loads' of this channel video's and learned so much! Even my English's been improved lol! Here, I especially liked the sdd-3000 and am 90% convinced about buying one. BUT since I play the chapman stick, I wonder about ins and outs: can it work as a dual mono and keep separation between the left and right signals? and maybe mae a preset where one signal has no delay(by turning right channel level down maybe?)I hope we'll keep seeing those lovely guests, Pete Thorn Ed O'Brien, all those über nice people. Thank you!

I was considering buying the Korg, but I ended up going with the TC Alter Ego X4 about a week ago to go along with my Timeline. I am really liking it so far. It has some weird quirks, but I can't imagine finding anything better for the price ($150 from PGS! Crazy). It is quite huge, but it looks cool and sounds great. Can't ask for much more. I'm using the TC for "basic" delays and the Timeline is handling the really weird stuff.

Found an AEX4 in Reverb for about 130USD, I'm the happiest man ever since! IMHO works the best with lower output pickups, with Hi-Output pickups the sound sometimes "breaks" specially with the Copykat and Echorec setting. It's just a beautiful delay. It has MIDI ports but still haven't found a use for it; any idea about that?thanks guys!!!

hey guys great vid as always, i was wondering if youve ever mucked around with the akai headrush, reason i ask is as far as im aware its the only unit with an output for each simulated tape head so lucky ones like you guys with lots of great amps can dedicate an amp to each head theres 5 outputs so the delays can be sent each delay to a seperate amp and you can sculpt the sound around the room in 3d....

Hey Dan and Mick - Got a real nerdy one for you... Would love to hear your thoughts on patch cables and plugs etc types of and their impact on tone. I know you've touched on the capacitance of leads before but in my experience the high current draw digital effects like the ones you've been demoing are often a bit noisy in the signal chain. So making sure the noise level from patch cables and leads is kept to a minimum before these effects is very important. There is always a lot of myths and hearsay around these sort of "peripheral" items in the signal chain so a short video might be quite informative to some members of your audience. Keep doing a fantastic job guys! Your approach and content is spot on. Cheers
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 7 жыл бұрын
+Sam Ploutos As long as they're good quality, shielded cables, Sam, your patch leads won't make much of a difference. Such short runs mean that capacitance isn't an issue - again, assuming you're using something high quality - and as long as they're shielded that will deal with noise. You're going to get much more noise from your pickups and a rubbish power supply. Doubt there's enough for a whole video and we'll probably just upset everyone because we use really expensive cables! (And you probably don't need to).

Micah Berlow - problem with that is that MIDI works differently with different pedals and indeed, with different switching systems. There's too much to cover in one tutorial. If Chase Bliss pedals are your thing, then there's a guy called Paul Uhl, who is a Beta tester for Chase Bliss, who put a few tutorials on the Chase Bliss site, specifically covering things such as CC programming etc. Very usefull indeed.

The magic in the Sdd3000 is when the input is just overloading and the output is set to +4db (approx 20db boost). That into a Vox / Marshall /.Fender is the sound and one of the main reasons why Edge, Lanois etc use the unit (aside from some nice echos !). Also, if the pedal is not used in that way, the Sdd3000 setting will have reduced output compared to bypass.

Hey guys I wonder how many interesting sounds you could achieve by putting modulation/drive/eq pedals in the insert loop of a delay like analogman's or the newer ehx memory man. There are some other effect pedals, digital and analog with this feature which is often suggested to be, but rarely actually utilised and I wonder why is that? Anyway, good that you brought back the video, that was some very tasty playing by both of you there especially in the first part ;)

Idea for another episode: "Mick and Dan's Current Pedal Boards." Out of all the awesome pedals you demo on the show, how many of them actually earn a place in your rig? In this episode, Mick seems pretty taken with the Alter Ego and I am wondering if it actually made it onto one of your boards. Just an idea. Plus, it could be something you do every 6 months or so, just to keep us up to date. Keep up the good work, gents! (PS. I'm buying an Alter Ego shortly after my D&M Drive arrives :)

I'm not sure the Alter Ego can be mentioned as a "Mega Delay". I have one that I love, but it has only vintage simulations and some of them are so much modulated that are hard to use. Moreover if the pedal is not connected to a computer via tone print there is not so much to change in the delay sounds. I intend a "mega delay" a unit that can do it all by its own, not with a computer.

You need to make sure the pedal is getting the current it needs. Our power supply system can deliver that but yours can't, definitely use the one supplied. And watch our VCPI episode from a while back. If you scroll through the past videos you'll find it. Cheers!

Triple delay is a piece of crap Tc electronic makes some good delays the triple is not one of them. However TC's quality control stinks they make pedals that do not last all junk.

+That Pedal Show here is a challenge: How about trying out the Line6 Helix vs. Fractal Ax8? :) I know it may go against your principles, but they are some very interesting new tools
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 7 жыл бұрын
+Nacho Harriague it's not principles, it's that those are sooooo in depth, there's no way we could do this in a single show, but we're not saying never, we just need to work out a format

+That Pedal Show Here's an idea: Choose 1 or 2 "typical" amp + pedal + mic combo (i.e. Deluxe Reverb + TS808 + SM57). Then do a comparison between the real one and the modelers trying to make it as "real" as possible. :)
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 7 жыл бұрын
+Nacho Harriague Hello Nacho. I bought a Helix recently (Mick here) in order to try and reframe this whole debate a little bit, and it may feature in a show or two in time, once I'm really comfortable with using it. We'll save you some time and trouble - when recording them you can make them sound virtually indistinguishable - plenty of KZbin demos have proved that. But in the room/on stage, at proper volumes the real amps and digital sims are very, very different. It's not about better or worse (although Dan and my personal preferences are for for real amps/pedals), it's about application. Many of our touring friends choose Kemper over the others as they say it's the most natural sounding. Every single one of them says they'd rather plug into a real amp given the choice, but it's just not practical for their situations. Dan and I don't care about practicality so much. :0)
@nachoharriague
@nachoharriague 7 жыл бұрын
That Pedal Show I can imagine there's a difference for live applications as well as why some people may choose sims for portability, etc. Thanks for the thorough response and looking forward to seeing when/how you bring sims in. Great show btw :-)

90% of KZbinrs demo delays with U2 riffs. The key is using the back of a grippy pick. In fact, you don't need his delays, just that scratchy sound. Anyways, not that my two cents matter, but, in my opinion, his sounds are so specific that I'd rather not tred upon them without getting them right. I for one love his tone. I know a couple, but I've never really been into learning classic riffs. Maybe I should? Oh well. That's what Dan and Mick are for. =D

Gents: It would be great if you could give a discussion and demo of buffered vs. true-bypass pedals: why buffers are there; when to opt for buffers vs. true bypass; where to put buffered pedals in your signal chain, and the impact of that decision with some demos. It seems like "true-bypass" has become synonymous with "quality," but I'm betting the truth is more nuanced, based on nothing more than the reputation of some of the buffered pedals out there (Klon, anyone?).

I currently have a TIMELINE, SDD 3000 and a X4, and the SDD 3000 is by far the best of the 3. Shame the SDD 3000 is on longer being made. TC's stuff is low end these days, not as good as they use to be.

Bort Henderson. Do you mean the SDD3000 rack or pedal version is no longer being made? There was a rumour that the pedal version had gone out of production, but that is not the case. Korg are still making them, they are just on back order at the moment. I agree with you about it's quality.
