This week on That Peter Crouch Podcast, Crouchy, Chris and the Notorious SID are joined by Manchester United and England legend Rio Ferdinand.
Rio reminisces on his early days coming up through South London and the infamous ‘cage’ matches and we hear about his early playing days at West Ham (shoutout Julian Dicks) and Leeds.

as a leeds fan for me its only friendly banter to rio, in honesty we did need the money and it didnt matter where it came from. Ridsdale caused it all. Rio is a class pundit and was class for us.

Leeds season ticker holder for 19 years here - To answer Rio's question its a mixture of: He left to our arch rivals which is horrific He seems to gloss over his time at Leeds previously and when he was it at times hasnt been nice. I think a lot of it though is if i take my biased hat off.... He left to the club we despise the most and went on to be a cult hero there and have all the success whilst we went to toilet. Football is a fickle sport

Cage football when i was younger growing up in East London in the late 80’s, early 90’s was brick walls and paint for goals 😂😂 that was before the invention of cages, probably for safety ironically! another brilliant episode, great insights from Rio for those not directly connected to club football. i remember being told when playing for a junior squad the that the first team coach is in the stands scouting, had a good game, was pulled out of the dressing room afterwards to find out he wants a word with me. I went into his office and he calmly said "do you think you will find the time to come and train with first the team". I swear my face expression must have been ?is he on drugs or sth? of course I will come and train haahahha

I disagree with Crouch's claim that nobody in football is taking drugs. The Eufemiano Fuentes case suggests that it has been going on in the past. It wasn't just cyclists. We know that some of the witnesses in the case have stated that well known footballers were witnessed visiting doctors involved in doping.

What they're saying about cage football is a bit romanticised. I grew up in East London and tbh street football has basically died out. The facilities are shit so we were all forced to use power league and goals...so basically pay to play or just fuck around on on the literal street or in a park. Also, the quality of football in cages was never that high or that technical. Club football was where it was at, even school football. London ain't Brazil, where cage football is very quick and technical

It isn't romanticised at all. The cage thing is largely South London. Look at the precentage of lads from South London playing football as a pro is 14 %

If anything, east London dominated thanks to the sheer number of clubs and training facilities around. Even in school football, St Bonaventure's used to dominate the London cup and half their boys were west ham academy players. North London dominated basketball but East London and Essex were always very strong for football, just a culture of it. The media have spun a narrative about South London but I can almost guarantee it's baseless
