Millenia of various civilizations' superstitions have rendered snakes as being seen as "evil", dirty earth-crawlers, and are killed simply due to that fact. Snakes are more scared of us and only attack to protect themselves, like many other creatures. In actuality, without the help of snakes civilizations would be overrun with pests but humans and snakes are doomed to clash as we share the same environment. It's not the fault of the snake that humans make perfect hidey-holes for them in structures like houses, cool places to escape the heat. In addition, humans attract pests, like rats, which attract snakes, so it even the fault of the snake to be in the structure in the first place? So yes, very misunderstood.
