OG FF7 means a lot to me. It was the last game my mother gifted me back in 1997 before her cancer came back and we ultimately lost the fight. I remember it clearly even to this day. After weeks and weeks of her being in multiple hospitals she finally came home-it felt like a victory at the time. But of course she only came home so she could die surrounded by the people she loved. Doctors couldn’t do anything anymore. My much younger (and at the time more spiritual) self prayed to every god that would listen back then. "Please; Don’t take her…" I tried. I really, really tried… But ultimately I could do nothing of course. Nothing but take that last walk to her bedside right before she died. So … that scene with Aerith (37:13) fucking destroyed me while playing Rebirth.. because I know that walk… I know it so well. I know that not everybody is happy with the changes in the Remake series. Some even accused it of "cheapening the core of what FF7 is". If you feel that way it’s ok. But from where I‘m standing, Remake and Rebirth feel like they were made by artists who not only understand very clearly what made OG a masterpiece, but artists who, through their life experiences, were able to deepen the core message of OG FF7 even more and expand what it means to confront the inevitably of death with many more facets. And I‘m glad to see FF7’s story experienced today-not only by those who played it back then, but by all the newcomers as well; because I think it’s an important one. It was back then and it is today. So ultimately: thank you Kasta, for letting us be here for your journey-looking at this masterpiece of a story with fresh eyes. I hope we all meet again for part 3.

I’m sorry to hear that. I can’t speak for others, but I’ll try to explain why I personally didn’t like how they handled Aerith’s death (or rather why I didn’t like it as much as I know I could have). Those final moments with a loved one are quiet, so quiet and understated that it’s world shattering something so horrible can happen so silently. It’s not some cinematic experience with tons of fanfare. The original game understood that. But in Rebirth they were throwing everything they could to make the moment epic, and for me in drowned out the weight of her death. Sometimes less is more. It’s obvious the creators care about this story, but that’s a principle I’m not convinced they understand. Don’t get me wrong I still think this is an amazing game, and I don’t want to discredit anyone else’s experience with it. But for me it didn’t land, and it’s sucks because I really wanted it to. In any case, the most painful part of loss is the hole it creates. There’s still lots of opportunity to flesh out the crew’s grief over her death, and I’m sure the developers will continue do a great job with that. We got a taste of it at the end, and it was really gut-wrenching.
@Mychel_Nox6 ай бұрын
@@dearthofdoohickeys4703 Totally get that. You‘re right that in Rebirth there is more spectacle as in OG (it is the ending of a game here after all, not simply the ending of disc 1). But to conclude from this that the creators don’t understand that "sometimes less is more", is a bit much imo. There are many interviews with Nomura and Hamaguchi where they both were very nervous about how the ending in Rebirth would be received. It is pretty clear to me that what they did with the ending was very deliberate and not a byproduct of them not having the necessary understanding. You don’t have to like it. I get the issue you are having with it, I really do. I too feel somewhat "robbed" of all that quiet stuff they omitted from the ending. But again, I think I get why they did it the way they did, and I even think I like this way more than the OG. But to elaborate on why would necessitate that I dive deep into spoiler territory and what I think part 3 will be like. And I don’t want this here. Let’s hope we all see the stuff in part 3 we were expecting originally for Rebirth. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.
@dearthofdoohickeys47036 ай бұрын
@@Mychel_Nox I understand that. It’s a subjective thing, and I hold to my opinion. The fact they were nervous about the ending is imo proof positive they understood they were poking around a sensitive issue. This is one of the most famous deaths in nearly 30 years of gaming. There’s a reason for that. I respect they wanted to go for an even bigger emotional impact, but for me it didn’t work. I wish it did, but it didn’t. Less is more. Even if they understood the concept, they didn’t do it. Aertih’s death doesn’t need multiverse shenanigans to be sad, and I don’t think they make it sadder. I think it just makes things unnecessarily confusing 🤷♂️. But I’m not looking to rain on anyone’s parade, just sharing my perspective. If you liked it then I’m honestly happy for you.

@mrchicken69386 ай бұрын
Yep, also noteworthy is that right before the missing slides we see the scene with Aerith lying in Clouds arms, but instead of opening her eyes when he says so… she doesn’t. And then it fades black, implying she’s dead and that whatever Cloud is seeing is not resembling what really went down afterwards in the main Remake/Rebirth world. @@nickbusker725oddly enough, I find the way Rebirth handled Aerith’s death to be better than the OG. In the OG, Cloud accepts Aerith’s death when it happened. He is in full denial here at the end of Rebirth. That to me is a far darker and potentially far more sinister way to portray her death. The way they handled it only helps fuel Cloud’s deeper descent into madness and hallucinations. And I love it. Really sells the idea of Cloud’s mental state at the end. And now the devs have the incredibly MASSIVE potential of exploiting Cloud’s belief that Aerith is alive to fuel a potential rift between Cloud and the rest of the party. Like imagine Tifa seeing Cloud “talk” to Aerith and telling her stuff like “I’m glad you’re ok” only for Tifa to get angry with Cloud because she, in fact, is not ok. They could also take a far darker route… and have Jenova take the form of Aerith. After all, Jenova can become someone you “love”… Tifa has so much to endure and do in part 3. *puts on Barrett-esque sunglasses. That Aerith scene kicks my ass every single time. Never fail. I get it, though. That tiredness. It's the emotional trauma that Final Fantasy games are good at creating for it's players. They like to open up tiny wounds and then stick band-aids on you. They make sure the adhesive is on there nice and good. Then they rip it off and let you simmer in the shock and pain for a bit before they stick another band-aid on you. Thank YOU for taking the time to record and share your experiences. Watching the game through your eyes is so refreshing for me. When Aerith died in the original it was a real shock. No other popular game had done anything like that in such an immersive character-driven RPG. I remember playing it on holiday at my grandma's at like 2am at night and this happened, I was shellshocked. I played through the next bit in a daze! I don't really like how they did the scene in this one but it's good you picked up on what they were implying (I was so confused when I played Rebirth), and its cool it still affected you emotionally because I didn't know if it would land in this retelling without foreknowledge. I think they kinda flubbed the landing with all the ambiguity. Thought the rest of the story was amazing though. It'll be awesome to see you go through the original game and see just how crazy they went with expanding all the moments from that in this game. Stuff like Junon in this is simply amazing. Great playthrough, looking forward to part 3!

So I don't think you need to play crisis core to learn anything about the story that won't be revealed in part 3. In fact, parts of crisis core will reveal spoilers for part 3. I just want to say thank you, Kasta. I also commented your Remake finale, so I'm on my way to becoming a long term follower. I simply love the way you react to everything and how you give us old school fans a new pair of eyes to re-discover the OG via the Remake-Rebirth-R? trilogy. To be honest, even us old schoolers are discovering many things brand new with this take on the OG story. Some complain they made everything unnecessarily convoluted compared to the more straight-forward OG, but the more I see the last hours of this game through different streamers, the more I think it really fits the FF7 universe. They're creating many new and beautiful details. I loved how you developed your relationship with the amazing cast of characters this game has to offer, its world, and the story. Heck, your reaction to the Jenova story bit reveal is an all-time entertainment peak for me: was eating pop corn and drinking Fanta in the small refugee I created to watch these 5 hours uninterrupted after a week of long working hours, when I heard and saw you almost losing it when the Cetra narration said "Jenova", so good ahaha Your playthrough (especially this finale) has been a highlight within this kind of boring auto-pilot-mode year haha Can't wait to see you play FFX (my all-time favorite) later this year, and again, it's been a joy to witness how you entered the FFFamily.

But the revelation of Jenova being a calamity from the stars that crashed to the planet and not an actual Cetra alters alot of perceptions and motivations. Everyone thought she was a Cetra. Sephiroth thought she was a Cetra and thus thought he was of Cetra blood, thus why he felt like "the children of men" were his enemy. It is a mind blow across the entire story.

I finished the game back in mid-March and I'm STILL trying to fill the void. But here we are, the moment, THE scene. Wathcing your last video with the Aeirth segments and the wonder in your voice as she was learning to use the lifestream and how you hoped big things would come to her in part 3...well my heart just broke every time. However, who knows what Part 3 will bring. And that's the thing now, you're just as clueless as the rest of us. Sure those of us who have played the OG and all the other games have an IDEA of what's next, but SquareEnix has shown they have plenty of tricks up their sleeves. Is it all a multiverse saga? Different branching timelines? All happening in the lifestream? Who the hell knows! And anyone claiming to know are fooling themselves. The only people who know are the dev team working on part 3 as we speak. Hopefully Part 3 will be along by 2027 for the 30th Anniversary of the OG (this just aged me so badly lol). Also wet hair is hard enough to do. Bloody hair is also hard and then you have to include either shampooing magic or scenes that imply Sephiroth is stopping somewhere to shower. Plus in a world where you can manifest anything from Clothing to large plush robots and half the bodies decompose into livestream on the spot. Blood and dirt disappearing or not has got to be fickle.

There's so much to digest with this ending. I beat it more than a month ago and I still don't know how to feel about it, although I'm bringing in my knowledge and bias of the OG. What I find most fascinating and what I hope they explore in Part 3 is Cloud's mental state. That boy is beyond not okay in the head, even more so than he was in the OG at this point. I really appreciated the way the final boss battles wove in the context about Cloud's seeming denial over Aerith's death. Everyone in the final fight starts with a full limit gauge because they're overcome with grief and fury at Aerith's death...except Cloud. Why should he be mad? He saved her. When Jenova uses Mourning Wail, it hurts everyone and pushes them back...except Cloud. He's not in mourning. Aerith's fine. He saved her. This has been a phenomenal playthrough from you as always, Kasta. Your fresh perspective on this series is something we don't get to see online very often. I know it'll be a while before you get to it because you need an FF break, but I'm even more looking forward to your playthrough of X, which remains my favorite game to this day. Stay awesome!

Yeah I was wondering about that too. Cloud seems to have the ability to perceive different realities now (like the rift in the sky). But why can he do that? Is it from his connection with Aerith and the lifestream? Or is from his connection with Sephiroth and the Reunion? If I had to guess I would say he has both affecting him; just like how he has the white and black materia’s. Poor guy is in the middle of everything and it’s tearing his mind apart.
