I like the idea that Columbo can truly relax only when he’s with his wife, and that when she’s not there, his habit of detecting the littlest details kicks in and he can’t help but notice problems and try to fix them.

Her absence is really weighing on him in this scene -- it's a really neat detail. For the audience, an episode of _Columbo_ where Mrs. Columbo is out of town is exactly the same as any other, but Columbo feels it.
