No matter how big your hand is, a tanyao will end it all

@@RedstoneRomel true. Even a colossal hand like 13-way kokushi musou would be annihilated by a mere open tanyao. Its always a better choice to pursue fast, cheap hands rather than going towards fancy, expensive yet slow hands. Especially when your starting hand is shit, which happens 99% of all time. Anyway, if youre lucky, those cheap hands could be buffed with dora / ura-dora / aka dora / kan dora. Getting a mangan with open hands / cheap hands is not uncommon.

At least it wasn't like the Shin Chan shorts where in the one known as Nene in Wonderland, Masou through down a red dragon and everyone went "RON" on him. Bou-chan got Three Big Dragons, Shin-chan got Four Closed Triplets "tanki" (the "tanki" part means he already had three triplets and needed to complete a pair), and Kazama-kun got Thirteen Orphans. All of them were a Yakuman. If you played enough Mahjong, you would know that's practically the point where you lose the clothes off your back XD
