I appreciate how close you tried to stick to the original concept. Many peoples redesigns are nearly impossible link to the original. If you go on the wiki you can read her backstory, and bizarrely her appearance doesn't look anything like what I'd imagine and has no link to being a "scrapper" I think it would be fun if you took your design, and then tried to design a version directly inspired by her backstory.

This is the first redesign I've seen that looks really cool and stays true to the original concept of the character, rather than just making character skinny and if it's a woman in more revealing clothes. Nice job

Almost every re design video i have seen doesnt take into account the brief they would of gotten for the characters which is retro future 70's sci fi. I saw one comment mention Jean Giraud which is exactly right. This looks good, but isnt on brief and would also be rejected from an AD, Would love to see you take another shot at it and keep the brief in mind as well.

Yeah, this is indeed a very good point! I don't want to repeat myself, I already mentioned it here in the comments, but Concord doesn't manage to keep coherency or consistency in its retrofuturistic design either. The sniper girl (Vale?) is definitely not in this retro style, the alien (Lark?) with it's coral-mushroom-myconid features is not retro either, it is way too new-age with it's skinny, sleek, stylish design. 60's-70's aliens looked very different, just think about the creatures in the 1976 Star Wars Ep.IV, and compare it to e.g. the sleek, stylish Kaminoans from the 2002 Attack of the Clones. Same story with the female character in the long, flowing, dark blue dress (Haymar?). She doesn't have any charming retrofuturistic vibe either. That dress seems rather modern and stylish. So, while I think you have an absolutely good point here, Concord is inconsistent to begin with (and I don't even understand how the ORIGINAL designs went through the briefings....haha). Nonetheless, I love Jean Giraud Moebius, and I will definitely keep your idea in mind for my next video! :)) Thank you for taking the time to comment!

At around 46:22 when you remove all those weird lumps and other unnecessary things from her armor there is a very interesting psychological reaction. It's hard to describe, but it's almost like you turned down a shrill noise that I didn't even realize was there... and once it is gone the brain is so much more at ease. I've heard some people speculate that those unnecessary details could possibly be a result of using AI image construction during the design process. That AI drawing algorithms tend to fill empty space with unnecessary items. I had never realized how these unnecessary items causing visual clutter actually cause what could almost be described as mental pain/strain to the viewer upon looking at them.

Well done! You provide good insight and reasoning that other Concord redesign videos lack. I like how the dark green and black in the first design work with the gold in her hair, and I definitely prefer the slightly baggy utilitarian military style pants over the sleek and tight sci-fi pants - it meshes well with the big, bulky and strong tank character, I think. Personally, I like how the original character designs don't look like they have been kitted out with military armor and gadgets. For example, Emari's armor looks to me like it's meant to protect from blunt trauma or shockwaves rather than bullets, like it's meant to be worn while doing very dangerous work. As a result, I can make up a story of this character as someone that became an adventurer, mercenary, smuggler or pirate, and has repurposed stuff from her previous life.
@nord_berth
@nord_berth 3 ай бұрын
Honestly, I could absolutely stand behind the adventurer/mercenary/smuggler/pirate backstory, that actually would be rather unique and interesting, in fact it already got my imagination going! Even repurposed accessories would be absolutely fine, *IF* they were used cleverly and tastefully in the design. But unfortunately Emari's shape, color and detail choices are very poor and unsatisfactory. I know people (including me) are tired of comparing this to overwatch, but they way blizzard handled the "scrap aesthetic" is sooo tasteful... even after many years, I'm still not tired of it. But for such design you need to "exaggerate". If it's scrap or repurposed stuff, make that obvious. You know, stuff like thick metal plates that are soldered on kneepads in a makeshift way, or something like that. Something that when you look at, you immediately know what's going on, and you don't have to play a guessing game for that character's archetype. This clothing, in the original Concord design, seems like (actual) armor, but a very clunky and awkward one.
@RealPeoplePerson

@@nord_berth Yep, I agree. Your original points on the busy and eclectic design are definitely true. When I look at the Concord characters, I see many hints to their backstory. I love this video because your redesign is by far the best for taking what works about the characters and running with it; rather than just completely overhauling what was there. I did a similar thing with my own redesigns. Plus, you’ve managed to maintain the ‘tanky’ look that’s needed to get across their role in a hero shooter, which a lot of other redesigns fail to do. Awesome to see!

This is indeed a very good deep dive into the character designs, I've watched quite a few Concord character re-designs and most of them don't really talk about what's actually wrong with the original designs, so "hats off" to you sir! I actually kind of like the DaVeers design you mntioned, the "intestines" shaped bit on the stomach doesn't repulse me, but I find it interesting? I think if they used those odd shapes a bit more through the designs and had those in the right places it could work for the odd alien aesthetic, my only gripe with DaVeers is that bucket helmet, if that was a better shape, it'd be fine as a design in my opinion. Anyways, I like your redesign of this one, honestly I think they should have gone with a sci-fi beetle theme for this character and really made that the theme for her since they chose "round" shapes, instead of this weird mash of stuff...I definitely see the Guardians Of The Galaxy vibe they tried to go for but sadly it wasn't well thought out.
@nord_berth
@nord_berth 3 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! So, just a few things, because I really enjoy discussions like this! - regarding DaVeer's design: I haven't really talked about it in the video, but there sure are suits with "intestines" on them in real life, in fact the Apollo space suits were full of those pipes. I'll put links to some images below. Now, the Apollo space program is like the inception of retrofuturism and the "space age". But the point is, those pressure suits were full of pipes, and - for accessibility reasons - they were placed on the chest and stomach, so astronauts could reach them. However, those suits served a purpose: they tried to keep the astronauts alive in every situation. Style was not their priority; function was. In a videogame, we need the opposite. We need a recognizable style, and very little function, if any. In HALO, we had actual fans in the helmets (very tiny ones, but still), because the actors had a hard time breathing in those heavy helmets, and they wore it 8-10 hours continuously, AND they had to run, jump, fight, etc. in them. So we had to come up with a solution to make space for the fans inside a helmet, wire it, provide them with electricity, etc, so they can circulate the air. In a game, this is all unnecessary, and you can just go 100% for the design. Overall, one can take inspiration from retro space suits, in fact that would be the point: take inspiration from a core concept, and adapt it to an original design that meets the criteria of design principles (like those ones that I mentioned at the beginning of the video). - regarding the odd alien aesthetic: I find it funny how they couldn't stay consistent in that area, either. The alien creatures (Lark?) are very "modern-looking" with their coral/mushroom type aesthetic. But that's not how retrofuturism depicts aliens. If the clothing, set dressing, environment, the ship, etc. are so 60-70s retrofuturistic, why are the aliens not? I think the first Star Wars (Ep.IV) is a great example for this, and the pipe-stuff too: it is full of pipes and tubes (because again, that's what they saw just a couple of years earlier in the Apollo space program, and that's how the "future" seemed back then). But Star Wars placed those pipes and tubes so delicately, that they blend greatly with the environment, they are not obnoxious at all. Furthermore, in the 1976 Star Wars (ep. IV), the aliens look bulky, clumsy, although stylistically charming. In the 2002 Attack of the Clones, you can feel the new-wave or the new age: the Kaminoan has a very thin, sleek design, they are tall, skinny, with huge menacing eyes, very otherworldly-looking, and definitely not charming. Concord seem to to mixing the retrofuturistic aesthetic with this modern sci-fi style, and it doesn't do any justice for it. Like you said, "if they used those odd shapes a bit more"... I also say, if only they would have been more consistent with the style. i.imgur.com/w2F4XKI.jpeg i.imgur.com/GmVDa2S.jpeg i.imgur.com/e1n6dhA.jpeg i.imgur.com/2XrdwQF.jpeg i.imgur.com/bc8d4Gg.jpeg i.imgur.com/5oslmYA.jpeg (I mean look at this, it's amazing; even just copying this would have been a better design choice than what they actually went with, haha)

@@nord_berth Your welcome! And I too love a good discussion! I'm a freelance concept artist/illustrator of 14+ years, so it's great to really converse with other artists. And I agree wholeheartedly with your observations, if they stuck with some actual retro space suit aesthetics and implemented the tubes more through the designs in a unique way, It would really set them apart and feel like part of the designs function and look, It's like they had an aesthetic but kind of forgot what that was half way? The real glaring issue was the lack of interesting shape design to make their silhouettes recognisable and interesting. I do feel sorry for the artists involved as I think they weren't really sure of what the Dev's really wanted and the ideas got muddled with some bad design choices. Any rate, thanks for the discussion!

@@shannonbrocas1460 Yeah I do feel sorry for the artists too... I've seen a few videos on this topic, and the ones, like for example Asmongold's videos, they do a lot of harm when bashing on artists, the "small people" of a production. At the end of the day, it's the Lead Designer, the Director, the Producer, etc. who will decide and finalize every design. The average artists (those dozens of illustrators/modelers/painters who work on such big projects) are not the ones who will decide the final look (of anything). I remember one time on HALO S.2 my colleague had to stay in late because the lead designer asked her to make like 15 different types of navy blue colors (real handcrafted paint) for tests for the costumes of background extras. So she crafted 15 different navy blue paints, every one was just a veeery slightly different shade than the others; and she painted 15 trousers in different navy blue. Then the next day the Lead Designer picked the one she liked the most, and we moved on to the next thing. Us, artists just do what we are asked for, and the above-the-lines will decide what they want...

You are right about the quirkiness, and also others here in the comments mentioned Jean Giraud and his art (which I really love), sooo maybe in the next video I'll try to steer the design into that direction (space-age stuff, instead of modern bomb suits and stuff). It's just simply that I had more of a Rhino (Dirty Bomb) type of character in my mind, who's a competent and serious vindicator, instead of like a TF2 Heavy type of guy who's just a bullet sponge mixed with some comic relief. But you are right, this early space-age and quirky retrofuturism could have been a breath of fresh air, if implemented correctly. I mean, even stormtroopers fall into this category, and yet they are so well designed, so iconic, so universally loved. Anyway, I'll keep your suggestion in mind! I like the redesign, but I think (I skipped thru the video so apologies if you mention it) you overlooked the main visual inspiration for the characters, the works of Jean Giraud. While the final result does look more appealing, it also looks more generic and falls into the halo/doom type of armor, missing all that wacky and oddball characteristics from the source material that they were going for. Still, theres valuable insights here, just wish you had them in consideration while redesign it
@blackeye5181

to be fair, either designs close to Jean Giraud won't be mainstream ever, which is mandatory for session multiplayer games, or you at the very least need to show it in trailers (and not Guardians of Galaxy type of trailer). Gameplay also should be something that can work with these designs. Like this, it's just generic NOT FREE session shooter, with generic gameplay, generic maps and weird character designs (which makes them just wonky and not fitting). Either that planned episode should have come out before and IMPRESS and CAPTIVATE people or basically everything else in game should have been different to fit with these designs

I personally think one of the big issues with bertha is a lack of Highlight. Like you said, she ends up a green blob. Its ok to have a blob shape, but then you have to create somekind of highlight, some kind of visually dynamic aspect. Maybe that's what they tried to do with the color, but it just ends up a gross color pallete.

I'm not an artist, but what jumps out at me with Emari isn't just the drab and ugly color scheme but the way the outfit has all these padded curves to them make her look like she's playing some space football rather than being a mercenary. This isn't a juggernaut, this isn't empowering. She almost looks like a special ed kid. She reminds me of the brother from A Christmas Story whose mother wraps him up in so many layers that he can't move his arms anymore. And this is why you'll see people saying she's fat even though we can't actually tell what her body looks like - because her armor does not give the impression that she's a muscular Amazon. Her armor gives the impression she's a fat slob. So she has all this padding and these soft curved plates in her armor that looks wholly unprofessional, I am unconvinced this is a strong badass tank. And there are anywhere from 2-4 characters depending on who you ask who could "get away" with their designs if the rest of the roster had good and strong designs, but they don't they're awful and awful in ways that make it clear they weren't designed with foundational art knowledge OR took into account the videogame experience (color saturation blends them together on screen, poor silhouette make them visually indistinct during matches, etc.). I wonder if the 60s'-70's sci-fi aesthetic works against the game. Because if you go back and look at the media for that genre and era, the outfits don't invoke design that would translate well into a hero shooter. I could be wrong, but I'm not sure what led to the decision to make Concord based on that. If it were me I would try something based on 90's sci-fi and take inspiration from shows like Farscape, Babylon 5, and Stargate. If your game is supposed to be Overwatch but different, then works towards making it look more distinct from Overwatch.

THIS! I've seen a lot of "better design" videos or "using AI to improve the design" and over half of them just add bigger boobs, more cleavage, tighter clothing and more muscles. This stays close to the source while improving it. She's a woman in a big suit of armor, keep her in a big suit of armor. The helmet makes her head weird, so you added cool hair and kept the face instead of trying to make her younger and sexier. Overall shape of armor stayed about the same, but better designed.

TBH I somewhat understand why the "Intestines" like tubes and the arm straps existed, simply because it was inspired by the 70s Alien movie Void Suit. Said void suit being made of various quilted fabrics and sports gear. Removing them and using more modern armor aesthetics and colours has removed the thematics of the armor. Was the original armor ugly? yeah, but I could tell that it was based on 70s scifi. Your design, while greatly more aesthetically pleasing, makes her look more like an overwatch character.

oh shit, lebuktam! A következő vidi előreláthatólag magyar lesz, Azahriah-s dizájnról, magyar nyelven.

You know what, I found out about the source material, and I can dig it, I can accept that these characters dont need a redesign. But the world building isn't good enough to carry these character designs. If this was a singleplayer/coop story shooter these original Concord designs could work absolutely perfect. The redesigns doesn't work at all tbh. They are bland and dont tell anything. It's the world that really is important to carry the design.

I agree with what a lot of people have that you went too far off the general aesthetic of the game. You went with something much cleaner that feels like if unreal tournament characters were redesigned for Fortnite. I miss all the asymmetrical detail, wear and tear, and unique elements like the intestinal shapes you mentioned you dislike. I can appreciate the intestinal shapes aren’t your thing but you didn’t replace them with anything interesting in my opinion. The intestinal shapes are all over the design of concord, if you look at all the pipes and hoses in the environments they follow the same vibe. I think if you’re going to take out such a distinguishing aspect you have to replace with some equally iconic to look at. Appreciate your breakdown and analysis though, def went more in depth than a lot of these other videos I’ve seen, and the quality of your final concepts are pretty good even though I still don’t think they’re really hitting the mark.

I could tell just looking at the final piece you really know about character design. Most videos trying to redesign these champions just make them skinny with oversexualized clothing. Really impressive how you respected the character whole personal traits and made it incedibly nice. This here is a real character artist. 👏👏

It was amazing, it kept the essence of the idea and improved its charisma... THE PROBLEM IS: The essence itself didn't make sense with the game. So keeping it still fails, but if it were for another type of game, it would be badass. It's like Resident Evil Village: The essence of the European monster theme is great, but the name they sold doesn't match, which is Resident Evil, a game that was formed worldwide as a "zombie game", so if that game DIDN'T CARRY THE NAME, it would have more charisma, more freedom of creation and it would be easier to accept the information of such a theme.

I think this is one of the harder of the characters to redesign and still feel like it's the same character just reinterpreted. I do like this a lot more than the others I've seen although, as stated, it doesn't look like it fits the rest of the game as well (not that the rest of the game fits the rest of the game well, mind you).

your second redesign was interesting, however I feel like it completely butches the vibe that the original was going for: to me it seemed to be going for a "retro future sci-fi" vibe with clear signs of usage. Yours goes for a whole clean and futuristic and angular style. Its not to say your design its bad, far from it, but I feel like it doesn't go to the same direction that the original was using

The designs are bad, but you`re being too picky in many areas that don't necessarily have to have "whys", y'know? I mean, fictional characters have permission to not be 100% functional according to reality, specially super stilyzed ones. But you have really good points and accurate design thinking.

It's really hard to flip some heavily coded designs into something else like a good spiky guy. I would have loved a character like that, but you can't just put a good guy face on an aggressive body type alien and call it a day.

Just realized that spike guy’s outfit makes no sense. Either he does change shirts or they are one time use. No chance he can take it off without ripping them. Also, big girl should crippled from a battle. Every time I see her, it looks like she should be missing all her limbs at lest from the elbows and knees. Just make it a hulk buster type of suit.

Redisign = Overwatch look alike. Funny how all those youtubers surfing on the Concord Flop come up with lame ass art just as the original, this variation would receive the same amount of criticism. People treat this whole "redesign" scenario as if it would save the game... Changing the color and adding hard edges and bevels is nothing special, and if the developers decided to simply "copy" overwatch like you are doing, the game would still flop. The problem of the game as a whole is the price, advertisement, gameplay, and not just the design. It is a shame to see all those "artists" surfing on this trend just to grab a few likes and subscribers, when we all know the artists that worked for Concord were simply following guidelines, if you check their Artstation they have pretty awesome stuff, which wasn't even translated to the final design.

You just make design more simple and primitive. I didn’t like Concord, but they have a style. They have retro authentic. You didn’t catch the style in general. In general very sad how a lot of people with “smart” faces show how to “improve design, didn’t at least on the same level as the artist that did design for Concord :)
