That's NOT how you measure velocity

"Velocity is such a loaded topic in the Agile community. I've talked about velocity in videos and blog posts.
This time I want to come back to this topic once again, and remind everyone that velocity is a made-up number. It literally doesn't mean anything outside of a single Scrum team.
""But, Daria, what do you mean velocity is made-up? Isn't it one of the most used agile practices? How else do you measure Scrum team's productivity?""
Watch my latest video to learn how to properly use velocity (because it can be a very useful practice) and how definitely NOT to use it (and how, most likely, a lot of companies use it).
And how do use velocity? Share in the comments.

Indeed very insightful! In my team our velocity floats alot and always seems that we are not delivering as much based on velocity. Thanks for the video!

I need guidance on what to do with story point for spillover tasks . Should it be reduced? Can you please make a video on that?

Very insightful! Thank you! What you said about the wrong way of using velocity #s at the end of the video is such a great point! My company is wanting to run a velocity per developer 😵‍💫

Sometimes metrics are used in all of the wrong ways. We should be the gatekeepers for it if needed. I worked with one Team Lead who wanted to calculate how many lines of code each developer was making to track performance... 🤦‍♀️ And it was an experienced developer. Even I know that it's a vanity metric (and I've never been a dev)

Thanks for the video. But the example of commute time seemed closer to man effort than story points. So why use story points when effort can accomplish the same?

Thanks for sharing. I'm not sure I see how commute time is closer to man effort?
@kennethpeace
@kennethpeace Жыл бұрын
@@ScrumMastered perhaps I was thinking that commute takes time and effort as well as that effort is on absolute basis and story point is relative.

Oh, ok, I can see it now. When I use this metaphor I'm trying to put more focus on the unpredictability of commute time and the fact that "improving commute time" as a performance metric makes no sense. But yes, it is still related to time.

I m still confused capacity planning we do in efforts (hrs)...and doing estimation in story points...one is absolute and other is relative... please explain 🎉
