the thing with proving the problem is now your not worrying about a call back. A buddy of mine had a used hot tub that would shut down on high temp, I check senors all read the same ohm in a glass of water, then i pulled the pump to make sure there was not a clogged pump, the senor was mounted on the outside of the tube with the heater inside, pulled the heater tube looked inside and a small part of the heater was touching the metal tube where the senor was, pried the heater away from the tube put it all back together and no more shut down! Almost broke my arm patting myself on my back!

I think the issue you were observing was a dead drain chute... or drain slope ... heater. Looking front on against the evap, on the right slope top you can see two white wires going to what seems to be a heating mat glued to the slopes the ice was building up on. If that (what I presume to be a heater) is not working, ice melts off of the evap coil, then drips down onto the freezing metal plates. It freezes in place and makes a sheet. The next defrost cycle, it repeats and another sheet is formed. That goes on until the ice sheet accumulation is thick enough to isolate itself from the freezing metal chute. Depending on freezer temp, and defrost times it's more or less ice thickness, meaning the hot water will either deposit or melt away ice with each defrost cycle. At the end you get a half-frozen drain chute. So yeah, that's my take on this one; Drain-chute has a heater that's not working.

The brackets that hold the pad heaters in place also lose tension and creates a small gap between the drain chute and the heater pad. I usually take the brackets off and bend them open slightly to push The heater pad tighter against the sheet metal.

Had this happen with my refrigerator/freezer at home. It was set just a little too cold and the water would re-freeze before it could drain down to the pan. I had melted it out and cleaned the tubing a few times but it would always go back to dripping water into the refrigerator compartment with every defrost. (Basic residential fridge with the freezer on top) I turned the cold-stat to a little less cold and problem solved. It's been over a year and the problem has not come back.

So I went out on this same unit, the same problem. Called true tech support. There's actually drain heaters on the shout that guides the water to the drain. The heaters only ran in defrost. I found out that it was a manufacturing defect they are correcting for past customers. They want us to connect the hot leg of the tape heaters to the hot that always runs. so the heaters run constantly. Apparently, it wasn't enough time to defrost the walls in defrost only. The ice was stacking up on the side walls. LOVE THE VIDS, BTW. KEEP THEM COMING

I agree with a lot of the assumptions that the ice is building up over time on the side of the chute slowly choking it off. Almost like having the pan heater not work in a walk in freezer. It will melt off the coil but re freeze once it hits something cold enough to freeze on. The ice definitely looks like it is freezing in a pattern.

Not sure if you noticed or not, but there is a heater wire on each side of the “funnel” under the evap that directs the water to the drain hose. I’ve had the heaters go bad so the water drips on the sides of the funnel and then freezes and slowly builds up. This also makes sense, as it was froze all the way up and the drain inlet was clear because the drain heater was working, but not the funnel wall heater. Hopefully that makes sense.

Well, that detective work is what I like about this. Belive it or not: I picked up some here and there, it was enough to service my own ac. It had bad caps and I added a timer thing to get rid of heat that was just sitting in it, it is a moveable room unit. When the thermostat satisfied everything stopped running, I made it so that the fan keeps running to get rid of condenser and compressor heat. I have a question: Why would a compressor be insulated when it gets hot as hell from running? My compressor has an insulation sleeve- I don´t know why. Thanks!

I work with true reach in units all the time and warranties on them. Those slope heaters (called a trough heater) are the main reason for this when you see the drain at the bottom clear into the hole like it was but above frozen over. Test with pouring a cup of water down it and it will flow directly into the catch condensate pan with no blocks. True warranty tech said its perfectly fine to wire the slop heater into the evap pan to keep it on as the fan is running or else it will stop heating out of a defrost like the rest do. Hope this helps someone lol

So I'm thinking that this may have had the screw vibrate out of the clamp due to the running compressor nearby, the vibration likely caused the clamp screw to fall out, which in turn, either by itself or by someone removing the drain pan and not noticing, caused the drain to not have the pee trap anymore, which caused all the frost issues in the video

Your solution is likely better than OEM anyway, because even if the screw is reinstalled, it could vibrate out and we'd be back with the same problem again in a year or two's time without using something like Loc-Tite to keep the screw from vibrating out

We used to put filter media on reach in condensers to expedite the process a bit (worked fantastic and coils stayed clean, quick swapped the filter media, on to the next) then one day another company came in behind us and filled the customers head with "we were purposely voiding their warranties" and we lost Panera Bread due to this, well fast forward like 6-9 months later and we got that account back but every last one of their reach ins had plugged up condenser coils lmao

@@HVACRVIDEOS It was back when I was a PM tech, I remember that morning well walking in to the GM, manager and someone else all telling me to have a seat with them like it was an inside edition episode and he just flat out said "why are you voiding our warranties" "well the other tech said that voids warranties and can cause damage to the system so we have to replace them sooner" I just told them no thats bs and explained it but they had already made their decision lol

Did it have the true digital controller or did it say Danfoss? I know they were using the Solatek controllers but they were having issues with them causing freeze ups. I used to run into the exact problem before. Would come behind techs that would remove them bends and customers would constantly put calls in about freeze ups. I would always carry extra u bends on the van. Great video Chris! Here’s to bigger things in 2025.

When I initially found the unit frozen over, I thought the controller and sensors were wonky. Since the freezer was new and under warranty, I didn't think this was going to be an issue. Tech support actually called me and wanted to go through the system. I checked all the sensors, defrost heaters and operation ( defrost on when powered on) Checked the door gaskets and if the door was closing. All of the above checked out ok. In conclusion because it is a very busy store tech support believes the door was left open...possibly from over stocking and/or customer use. Warranty denied at this time.

So the drain heater is all the way at the bottom and there is no ice there so I’m assuming it’s working, but as others have said apparently there are chute heaters on each side of the metal chute that can fail so when I go back to replace the power cord I will check those, and the evaporator wasn’t iced up so the defrost heater is working. But when I go back I will check those chute heaters and follow up and report back of if I find anything else

Sounds good I remember service techs who take coat hangers and hook them to the defrost heater and run them down the center drain maybe inch or two so to help with ice buildup now that not the proper way it was just a little solution to a problem but it works well.now I didn't notice chute heater but maybe

@@HVACRVIDEOSI’ve never had an issue with the chute heaters but it’s all possible but since your evaporator wasn’t iced up I assume that is not the issue . One thing I caught not sure if you did but when the unit was draining it was draining through the side where the clear hose connects to the “U” bend . My theory that “U” bend is clogged water should make its way out through that “U” bend and not through the side wherr it connects to the “U”. Ive also seen those True units shipped with that “U” bend in the position of a hook horizontally the open end facing down towards the drain pan . Self contained units can be a pain to diagnose sometimes. Good video .
