NEW YORK ( / adage ) -- The ArnoldNYC agency in partnership with the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network has won the Ad Council's award for best Public Service advertising campaign. Entitled "Think Before You Speak," the messaging was designed to discourage use of the slur "That's so gay" by school students. The Council's Bell awards for creative excellence were announced at a dinner ceremony at Manhattan's Waldorf-Astoria hotel.

MrLemonboy, that is completely correct. My parents used the slur "that's so gay" quite often, which made me think they were against it. It made it very difficult to come out, but I managed it. Ever since, they haven't uttered the phrase at all. They never were against it, but the phrase was so common to them that they used it all the time. So yes, please be conscious of what you say. Nobody is forcing you to, but if you want to be respectful to everyone then do so.

In the military, any term for homosexual that can be used in a derogatory manner was prohibited. Instead the term "alternative" was utilized as a neutral basis to refer to anyone of an alternative preference. Boy, did that backfire. Being gay is not who you are or what you are, it is a sexual preference that should be your own Goddamn buisiness, so keep it to yourself and dont flaunt your sexual preference and No one will be affended. I have been sayin things are Gay since I was a kid and I will continue to enjoy my freedom of speech!!!

@22149SF I think the bigger thing people see is how absurd this commercial is for trying to control what we say in the land of free speech. And maybe the fact that people get bullied for other things such as hair color, facial features, being overweight/underweight, being a 'dork', and where are commercials trying to stop these "issues"? That is probably what he means by "homosexuals make a big deal on everything." Hate exists, period, and you can't stop it, even if you try.

i dont think some people get what these ads are trying to stop. "WHEN YOU THINK SOMETHING IS STUPID, YOU SAY "THAT"S SO GAY." THAT"S LIKE...." what they are trying to do is get people to stop using "that's so gay" when talking about things you think is moronic or ugly. they are also trying to point out that, when you say things like that, you are putting down an entire group of people, maybe even people you know. it's like saying "that's so Male." Or That's so Female."

Ughhh I hate it when people say thats so gay. Its insulting and just shows how ignorant you are. Whenever someone says "thats so gay" I say "thats so straight" to them every time I don't like something.

Being gay isn't who you are. That's like saying being straight is who I am. Just makes no sense. I'm very complex. Don't judge me based on my sexual preference of girls. Now, saying someone's name is who you are. Commercial makes no sense and gave me diabetes.

@22149SF - I really do not care who loves who, male or female. My comment was regarding a commercial and "that's so gay" was being used long before the girls in the commercial were born & like I said has nothing to do with liking the same sex. Sorry, if I offended you, but my gay friends respect what is really meant and the lingo in a conversation, in fact they laugh at the commercial, of course they don't have hang-ups either.

Why do people jump into other people's conversations in these commercials? Not only did the people not intend to use the word "gay" to offend homosexuals, they weren't even talking to the homosexual! Yet they butt right in and want to force people to have the same convictions they do! By the way, homosexuality is a sexual preference not a race. Disagreeing with or being disgusting by the homosexual lifesyle is completely different than not liking a particular race!

I think it's rlly insulting to the gays out there when ppl say "that's so gay", and btw, NO, I am not a gay, but I also like nvr say this! But the majority of the population nowadays don't care who it hurts when u say this, they still say it. :( and the redhead girl in that add, sometimes appears in iCarly! (: haha, js since I noticed.

@DWMC93 Give me a break. My wife is a nurse and friends, even REAL SPECIAL friends, can visit the dying or hospice victims anytime. What you wish are special rights strictly pertaining to your sexual preference. Any homosexual can get married. But in order to "marry" someone of the same sex you MUST legally redefine the original definition of a marriage. This notion is rejected by most states virtually whenever it's put to a referendum vote. It doesn't benefit heterosexuals in any way. Period!

@RockieOllie unfortunately many people don't realize how unfair it is to have the way you're born used to describe something that's bad (fascism!) And many people DO realize it's rude and mean to gay people and that's the main reason they use it AND then deny they meant it to be insulting!

But now they call people "Karens". I never use that term and have spoke to my kids about it. Karen is someone's name, Gay is also someone's name. I know because Gay is my maiden name and I have a friend with that name and know many more people with the name Karen. Stop using people's names as insults.

Let's also not forget that the underlying meaning behind that's so gay is subjective. I can be saying that and mean it's happy or joyful. Or I can just attach that word to a positive thing. It's just WORDS people, grow a thicker skin, fuckin a...

@SexyMelon Gay originates as a term that meant bright, happy, etc, Not as a swear. It then after was used to refer to homosexuals, and became a common term that people used to describe them. A term used more often than homosexual itself. THEN after it was used to refer to a gay person, a coupel years later it gained a negative connontation, and then followed as a negative term in response to it being used to describe gay people.

People need to understand that it's not homophobic... people are not literally saying that some inanimate object or event is homosexual, that makes no sense. The fact people get mad at this shows they have no understanding of culture. This whole thing is synonymous with the change in the use of "queer," which used to mean strange or odd but is now semi-PC for homosexuality. Why aren't they mad about that?

@MaitreTsu Just because it doesn't offend you doesn't make it not offense to everyone else. I agree, discrimination is awful and shouldn't be tolerated, but you might want to leave out the "unless" because you're leaving yourself to be contradicted. And good for you! You have every right to speak out against it but what you don't have the right to do is infringe on other people's beliefs by forcing yours down their throat.

I agree that the original meaning of many words has changed. There is nothing wrong with that; it's not a new trend. Why then do you come unglued when the word gay is used to mean something else? You can't have it both ways. And enough already with the petty sarcasm.
