It may be the version that you remember, but Herman's Hermits got the song second-hand on a license from the original.

Bear family records put out a two cd box , best of Herman’s hermits in 2015. Catalog number BCD 17357. All tracks are in true stereo. The master tapes were located and remixed by Ron Furmanek in 1991 at abbey road studios using the 2 -3-4 & 8 track masters. Well worth the money to hear these songs in true stereo. The 138 page booklet is loaded with photos of the ep and lp sleeves as well as the record labels of various 45s and EPs. Photos of the band appear as well. There are 66 songs on this set, all unedited.

I actually met Herman's Hermits in person in 1979 or 1980 when they were touring the US! It was in a Dunkin Donuts just before they were about to perform in a nightclub in Stanhope, New Jersey, believe it or not! Now, I'm thinking this was the newly formed group, which explains why the autographed picture looked nothing like the pictures on the album covers. Such a random brush with fame! Sadly, I can't find the picture anymore.

Yes, "Brill Building" was a metonym more for a song writing process than a locus of activity. As you recently printed out, the quintessential brill Building song was written the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles! Always surprised that Carpenters didn't cover this. I took a great deal of grief in a video once for opining that Carole King is the greatest living American songwriter - Jimmy Webb and maybe Smokey Robinson run her close, but I stand by that. By the way, this made #11 in the old hometown!

@@the_guitar_trooper You did your usual impeccable job! Mickey Most was always a bit fast and loose with things, like royalty payments etc. He, of course had the great RAK label in the early 70's - if you were down the record store and you saw a new single on that label, you just bough tit because you knew it would be great!
@MartysPopParty

Excellent job on this GT. Isn’t it odd how the thirst for details on these sessions and circumstances seems to grow as time passes ? Perhaps it’s because folks realize the genuine quality of the craft involved from writing through recording and mastering. And yes, it’s a shame that better records were not kept on sessions,etc. Unfortunately, as time passes, memories become blurred and distorted. Something akin to what they now call the Mandela Effect. You ask three of the original band members about a certain recording session and end up with three different stories. That’s why we have The Guitar Trooper to sort it all out. Ha !
@the_guitar_trooper
@the_guitar_trooper 19 күн бұрын
So true, Marty! Thanks for your support, but I gotta say that sometimes there is no cooboration for any accounts of an event and sorting it out requires inspection of the source contributer, timing of events, and any other relevant evidence. I hate to guess, but sometimes the vagueness of the recounted events is irreconcilable. Such fun!

I have not heard that work. I might find a moment to catch it though. Not long after they did that first recording, Kingsway was purchased by the Delane Lea company and in mid 1965 the arcane studio equipment was upgraded to an 8-track recorder and new mixing desk. A lot of their subsequent records were mastered there.

In 2015 bear family released Hermans Hermits anthology. A lot of the songs were remastered and remixed and it's the best sound quality of any Herman's Hermits CDs I've ever heard. Some of the songs had a count in and a lot of the songs had longer fadeouts. Although there's a ton of songs on these two discs it's still missing some that I wish that were on there, especially songs from the both sides of Herman's Hermits album.
@the_guitar_trooper
@the_guitar_trooper 19 күн бұрын
It’s possible that the first songs were eliminated from this collection because they couldn’t be remixed. Other than that, I don’t understand why they would leave them off either.

Earl-Jean's version of 'I'm Into Something Good' is SOOOO superior to the pimply "groove" rendered by Herman's Hermans that to prefer the latter is, to me, mouth-dropping, though I have to confess that when I was a young lad, I did have two 45s starring this ridiculous combo. My record of 'Mrs. Brown...' has a different B-side to the one you display: 'I Gotta Dream On'.

The probable reason, of course, that her version get any higher on the chart than it did was the fact that she was not British. In 1964, British acts ruled.

My friend Jay would drop his dad off at the truck terminal to haul goods to Buffalo and we’d have the car for the weekend. ...it would be risky business to raise the cost of making a brand new group's first record by hiring studio musicians..." The most famous exception to this, of course, would be George Martin bringing in Andy White to drum on 'Love Me Do" and 'P.S. I Love You' which still irks Ringo to this day. 🙂

I saw the original Herman's Hermits a couple of times and have to believe that the records were made with seasoned musicians. Maybe not that first one, but after that, they just sounded too good. The original guys were okay, but they just didn't play like the real teams we saw with The Beatles and The Stones. The band Peter has now is top-notch, by the way!

I would disagree that Brill writers (and their publishers) didnt expect UK or other countries to pick up tunes, as these would be mailed over by publishers to (mainly London Denmark Street publishers they had deals with) people would come in and say, what have you got ? The Beatles did their covers by listening to songs - (bought) denmark street might get promos or acetates sent over. the Beatles and some other groups realised that they got more money , and control, if they wrote their own material
