What a fascinating backstory about how "Wichita Lineman" came about! I was fortunate enough to see Glen perform at my local Community College just before Christmas in the late nineties. Having seen the Goodtime Hour long before then, I thought of Glen as more of a singer and TV host. His guitar playing at this concert was AMAZING! Now that I've retired and had time to explore the internet and listen to podcasts like yours, I'm even more appreciative of articles like this one about music I still listen to and consider great. Thank you for taking the time to share and I certainly look forward to reading more from you!

I love the story and the way you present them. I remember an interview with jimmy who said he heard an early song of Glen's when he was 16 and vowed, thats the person im going to write songs for!

Nothing happens by accident. Coincidence’s don’t exist! This was intentionally orchestrated by the Divine… This song is perfect in more ways than one. Absolutely heavenly….

Great job. This is a timeless song. I like to play this song as a chord melody arrangement on guitar. I’m not Tommy Emanuel, but I’m satisfied and it still moves me whenever I play it or hear it.

Love your deep history lessons which I share with friends. I worked in the Brill building in the early seventies. I was 18 years old, just graduated high school looking for an office job till I went to college. I've always loved music n got a job at a big music publishing but didbt know the history of the Brill building until I worked there. Some stories about the many writers n artistst that came out if that building woukd be great. Fyi I never left the music industry n never made it thru a year of college

So happy to have just had your terrific chanel recommended! Your work here is marvelous Sir! Witchita Lineman could possible be my favorite song ever. I was fortunate to have seen Glen perform this song on his Farewell Tour in 2012 and the performance was just as moving as the record, perhaps more so as we knew it would be one of the last times he would sing it. Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. Webb and Campbell came together and created something sublimely rarified and perfect with this song. Thanks again friend!

I'm your basic 70's rocker. I consider Wichita Lineman t be one of the best songs of all time. To get that rating from me, a song has to transport you, as if you are there. The other leader in that category is Rainy Night In Georgia. These two songs are tied in my mind for that ability to take you out of where ever you are, and put you in their place. Just brilliant songwriting and performing.

Your video came up in my recommendations and I LOVE it. It probably was recommended because I always listen to that song on KZbin. I also look for cover versions, etc. I’m an old (61 years old) musician who mostly played in punk, jazz, prog, blues & psychedelic bands. Yet this song is one of my all time favorite songs. I first heard it when it was released in 1968 when I was 5. I was immediately obsessed with the song although the lyrics were kinda above my age & pay grade. Yet I knew it was about love & longing. The biggest effect the song had on me was the couplet, “And I need you more than want you. And I want you for all time”. Even as a child I found that line to be a puzzle about how much the protagonist loved his partner. As I grew older that one resonated hard with me. It might be the best song lyric about the depths of love that a person has for another. I grew up (and still live) in the Hollywood/ Los Angeles area. As a kid my mom would take us to all the recording studios in the neighborhood… from Gold Star to Western so we could see musicians. I actually met Glen Campbell in 1969 at a restaurant called Nickodell on Melrose which was right next to the Desilu & Paramount studios. We used to live across Melrose just up Beachwood. We had moved by that time but my mom always loved going to the Nickodell restaurant. When my mom pointed put Glen Campbell to me I immediately bolted out of my seat and ran to get an autograph from him and to sing him a song… and yes.. It was Wichita Lineman. I was still 5 because my birthday wasn’t until August and this was around Spring time. That is still one of my favorite memories. Sorry for the rambling. Let me finish by telling you and your viewers of a great book about Wichita Lineman by a writer named Dylan Jones. The book is called “Wichita Lineman: Searching in the Sun for the World’s Greatest Unfinished Song”. It’s a brilliant book and tells the whole backstory that you touched on along with a few other stories related to other Glen Campbell & Jimmy Webb. It’s a fun and informative read. I’m so glad this video was recommended to my by KZbin. I’m now subscribed to your channel and I’m looking forward to see your other videos. Happy New Year.

one other fact the music was played over those tiny little crappy stadium speakers if i remember correctly. Which sounds like listening to music through a mobile phones speaker nowadays.
@the_guitar_trooperКүн бұрын
Yep. The band had no sound system with them and used whatever the venues supplied. Nobody in 1965 ever heard of a sound reinforcement system.

They're all good, so it's very close: I go Linda first (that amazing voice!!!), probably Eagles next (theirs is arguably the definitive one), and then Johnny (I love his version having the added perk of the steel guitar).
